This is again a shot from our stay in Himachal Pradesh from 2013-16.I took this shot on our way to the remote village of Bharmour in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.See how the tiny hamlet clings precariously to the mountainside and the terraced fields around it.We must have been at an altitude of around 9000 feet when I took this shot.

This area of Himachal is not much frequented by tourists but It is incredibly majestic and beautiful .

Might be worth a look in large.

Terraced fields and a village somewhere on the way to Chamba in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India. Another photo from our 3 year sojourn in this beautiful state from 2013-16.I hardly knew how to use my camera then otherwise probably this shot would have been a better one.

As I am sure everyone here is aware ,things on the virus front are pretty grim here in India at the moment.Pune is one of the worst affected cities and we are under almost total lockdown. So I am completely housebound with no scope of photography at the moment. The nightmare seems to go on and on and I wonder when it will end.

Take care dear friends stay safe.

This is the reservoir of Chamera Dam on the River Ravi near Dalhousie in Chamba District of Himachal Pradesh.

This method of farming uses "steps" that are built into the side of a mountain or hill. On each level, various crops are planted. When it rains, instead of washing away all of the nutrients in the soil, the nutrients are carried down to the next level. Additionally, these steps prevent a free flowing avalanche of water that would take plants with it and destroy the all of the crops on the hillside

Chamba is a district in the north-western corner of the state of Himachal Pradesh bordering the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The famous hillstation of Dalhousie is in Chamba district. The town of Chamba (the district headquarters) is located in a spectacularly beautiful valley on the banks of the River Ravi (one of the five rivers of the Punjab). The average elevation of this area is around 3000 feet. The history of the ancient kingdom of Chamba dates back to around 500 AD.This corner of Himachal is not a regular tourist haunt but it is an incredibly beautiful area. All the more so due to the absence of touristy crowds.:-)

This is a village in a remote corner of Chamba district. It is not a great photo but I thought my friends here would find it interesting.

A sun kissed Chamba under the clasp of clouds

This village lies at an altitude of 3,268 feets.Living a life at such altitudes is always challenging. However the serenity of the village takes away all the hardship of people living there.

My favourite photo from a long ago work related trip to picturesque Chamba valley in Himachal Pradesh. Taken with my old Sony.I have probably posted this one earlier also but I wanted to share it with all those friends who have joined me in the last few years.

Chamba is a district in the north-western corner of the state of Himachal Pradesh bordering Jammu & Kashmir.Chamba valley is an extremely picturesque valley and the River Ravi ,one of the five rivers of the Punjab, runs through it.The ancient town of Chamba is the capital of this district. It is situated on the banks of the River Ravi at a height of 3268 ft. above sea level. The area was formally ruled by the Maru dynasty from around 500 A.D.The ancient capital of Chamba was Bharmour at a distance of about 75 kms.from Chamba. In A.D 920 Raja Sahil Varman shifted the capital to Chamba at the request of his daughter Champawati. The town is named after her. From this time 67 rajas ruled over Chamba till its union with the Indian union in 1948.It was under British suzerainty from 1846 till independence.

Chamba is famous for its beautiful temples, palaces as well as its art and crafts.

Although Chamba is a little isolated and difficult to reach I think it is one of the most beautiful valleys of Himachal Pradesh and really worth a visit.

This is one from the archives.A shot taken with my very old Sony on a long ago work related trip to the beautiful Chamba valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh. That is a corner of the reservoir of a dam across the River Ravi, one of the 5 rivers of the Punjab. It was a dull day and I was in a hurry but the scene was dreamlike and I did stop for couple of shots. The altitude of Chamba valley is over 3000 feet. Hence those mountains in the background would be approx. 8000 - 9000 feet in height.

I am really longing to be in the mountains again.:-)

While looking through my old photos I came across this one.I had taken this on the way to Chamba valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh ,India in April 2014.We must have been at an altitude of over 8000 feet when I took this shot.I think today I would have done a better job with my camera but I thought this shot has captured the grandeur of the landscape quite well.I am also sure my friends will understand why I love and miss Himachal so much.:-)

There are two routes to reach the picturesque Chamba valley. One is via the British era hillstation of Dalhousie and this road (which we took) was an alternative one through a mountain pass called Jyot pass.At the time I was working for the Department of Telecom and as I was going to Chamba on work I was travelling in my official vehicle. The driver, a local gentleman named Balveer, was one of the most incredible drivers I have ever seen.In my 3 years working in Himachal I have travelled the most scary (albeit spectacular) roads with him and he seemed to have no nerves at all. This route was also very breathtaking but I had to hold my breath in fear several times during the journey.:-)

Chamba shawls are woven on hand looms in wool and typically have a bright border in a traditional design. A similar woven design is used for making caps.

The Chamera Dam impounds the River Ravi and supports the hydroelectricity project in the region. It is located near the town of Dalhousie, in the Chamba district in the state of Himachal Pradesh in India The reservoir of the dam is the Chamera Lake.

After completion of the first phase, the Chamera-I generates 540 MW (3x180 MW) of electricity. The second stage i.e. Chamera-II Dam generates 300 MW (3X100 MW) of electricity. From year 2012, the 3rd stage i.e. Chamera III generates 231 MW (3x77) of electricity.

The unique feature of the region is the fluctuating day and night temperature. The temperature during the day near the dam rises up to 35 degrees Celsius and drops to a minimum of 18 to 20 °C at night.

The water level in the Chamera Lake rises to a maximum of 763 meters while the minimum water level is 747 meters.

The absence of aquatic life in the lake has made it an ideal location for water sports. According to the plan developed by the tourism department, the lake shares the scope of sports activities like rowing, motor boating, paddle boating, sailing, canoeing, angling and kayaking. House boats and shikaras are also available. The government attempts to provide all these facilities to the tourists.
