The Old Chair

I spent most of my young life in the city. Manhattan to be exact. I was part of a beautiful dining room set. We were delivered one afternoon to a lovely upper east side apartment owned by a beautiful young couple. He was a doctor, she was an artist, watercolors mostly.

They had wonderful parties and I hosted many a person sitting around the table.

Over time they had a daughter and moved to a larger apartment, taking all of us with them.

One day we were all replaced with new and different pieces. They put us in a moving van and took us to a place far away in the forest.

When we arrived it was summer and the young couple painted us white to match all the other pieces of furniture in the old cottage, It sat next to a lake and there were other families around in other cottages. We saw lots of good times over the many summers there.

During the winter there were no people, the cottage was shuttered and it was very cold. The young couple aged, grew old and passed away.

My paint began to peel and the woven cane in my seat began to give way. One day someone went right through. Busted and peeling I was put outside on the side porch.

Rain and sun did me no good. I was taken with the rest of the trash to what they call the burning pile and thrown near the top of a mound of old wood and junk. I was not looking forward to my fate.

The lodge keeper would not burn the burning pile in the summer because of a chance it could become a forest fire. The best time was in the winter when there was snow on the ground.

People would pass the burning pile on their walks around the lake. But no one remembered me.

But I was lucky, one of the younger people recognized me, brushed me off and took me to their cottage. Now, with a new coat of paint and a new bottom, I sit in the corner of the old bedroom ready to give comfort to my new found friend.

“Table and Chairs” — A table and chairs under a portico in Santiago de Compostela.

One of the pleasures of (warm-weather) travel in many parts of Europe is sitting at an outdoor table to have a drink or a coffee and watch the world go by. This table and chairs were ideally situated beneath the arch of a portico, perfect for that kind of activity along a narrow street in Santiago de Compostela.

The table was empty, but my photo archive suggests that this was not the case for long. The next photographs in my collection are a series of images of espresso cups and spoons… strongly suggesting that we must have ordered coffee, taken seats at the table, and engaged in precisely that activity.

Thrift store score, 10 euros each. These will double as extra dining room chairs and extra living room seating.

The chair. In the making of the "We Can't Forget Vietnam" documentary this chair travelled all over the state of Texas. Everyone from a Private in the US Army to a Brig General, a Gunnery sergeant to the daughter of a Medal of Honor winner sat in this chair to pour out their hearts to us about their experience in Vietnam. Some of these men and women had never talked about the war to anyone. They trusted us. A life changing experience for me.

From my first series of photographs titled "Empty."

I have an affinity towards rocking chairs. Especially ones which look old and wise. Like this one... on the porch of a quiet house on a quieter street - right behind where we live.

Bound chair from Crate & Barrel

Authentic Antique Windsor Chair.

This one is more British-style – British Windsors usually displayed a solid central wooden splat, sometimes pierced but not spindle supported as in American Windsors – and it dates to 19th Century.

The center splat is damaged but the chair is otherwise solid.

Although several varieties exist, a Windsor Chair is typically multiple-spindle-backed chairs made by bending and shaping of green or wet wood constructed on a solid saddle-like wooden seat.

Turned, splayed legs support the seat and are wedged into the seat. Types of Windsors include: high-back, comb-back, sac or hoop-back, round-top, low back, brace –back, writing arm and child's chairs.

The Windsor chair form, popular in America, as its name suggests, had its origins in England where the design were decidedly different. British Windsors usually displayed a solid central wooden splat, sometimes pierced but not spindle supported as in American Windsors.

In recent auction highlights, a pair of Connecticut Windsor chairs made circa 1800 and signed E. Tracy realized $823 at Neal Auction Company in New Orleans, Louisiana. The pair had carried an original estimate of between $500 and $700.

Pierced Gothic splats: Often combined with pointed arch backs and cabriole legs, were introduced about 1760. The familiar wheel-back splat and diagonal struts rising from a 'bobtail' extension of the seat - both common features on machine-made Windsors - first appeared around 1775.

RELATIVE VALUES

Plenty of variation. Good early and hoop-back Windsors are expensive, few selling for less than four figures. 19thC versions less. Harlequin sets of all ages are common and, if matched well, no less expensive than an identical set. Few post-1900 sets fetch less than four figures. Yew, crinoline stretcher, cabrole legs, comb back, Gothic splat and arched back all enhance the value.

I love this old chair, very Mad Men, retro 1950s ?
