Thanks to the sympathetic interjection of architect & artist Cesar Manrique, most Lanzarote properties are painted white. This house (villa) on the small volcanic island of La Graciosa is however a rare exception to the rule, as it is an eco build, developed using traditional centuries old techniques & local materials.

I have finally edited the panorama that I captured in La Palma on the night of the northern lights (10/5/24). The editing process has been laborious but the result has been worth it, an unrepeatable photo since I did not find anyone else at the location that night.

That night was very intense, the last one I spent on the island. First I detected the auroras on the camera screen while photographing the Zodiacal Light, then I moved to capture the tajinastes with an aurora background and finally I went to César Manrique's infinity monument to capture my 360º panorama with the aurora and an impressive Milky Way still a little low. The monument lives up to its name and seems to rip the infinity with its tips. It is impressive to see how the light of the aurora dominates the sky and covers the constellation of Cassiopeia and Cepheus, right at the beginning of the Milky Way arc that begins at the monument.

But there is more to the photo, in the area on the right you can see the greenish night luminescence (airglow) on the horizon, just below the Milky Way and above the island of Tenerife with its Teide clearly visible. And to the right you can see the island of La Gomera. Can you find Polaris? This is a 360º VR version, so you can navigate in your screen or you can use a 3D glasses to have a unique experience.

The artist's former private residence, in Taro de Tahíche near Teguise, was built after his return to Lanzarote from the US. The 3,000 m2 home is more a loose agglomeration of volumes, strewn over a lava field, which disguises the real clou of the design: The six interconnected subterraenian lava bubbles (cavities formed by gas pockets in the molten lava) upon which the house is built, and which serve as a series of indoor and outdoor spaces including a pool patio, gardens and several lounges centered on trees growing through natural skylight openings.

The residence was turned into a museum and home of the Fundación César Manrique in 1992.

The Jardín de Cactus is a cactus garden on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. It is situated in the village of Guatiza, in a former quarry where volcanic sand (picón) was extracted to spread on cultivated areas to retain moisture. Prickly pears are grown in the area for the production of cochineal.

The cactus garden was created in 1991, the last project of César Manrique. The botanist Estanislao González Ferrer was responsible for the selection and planting of the specimens. The garden now has 4,500 examples of 450 species of cactus and succulents from North and South America, Madagascar, and other desert and arid areas.

The garden is in the shape of a large amphitheatre, with the plants arranged in terraces. A restored windmill, once used in the production of gofio, stands at the highest point.

LagOmar...a spectacular mansion conceived and designed by César Manrique and Jesus Soto. The mansion is a labyrinth of rooms, tunnels, gardens, patios and caves, which are built into a stone quarry.

Behind every corner you get a new surprise. For example this tunnel, which is naturally enlightet by the sunlight. Organic architecture at its best!

Timanfaya, mountains of fire. One of the worlds truely outstanding natural landscapes. Situated in Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. This is a natural park in which no endangered species of plant or animal are protected, it's a mineral museum in full activity: volcanic cones, craters, seas of lava, ash tongues of liquid magma that spewed from the bowels of the earth to solidify and sculpt natural monuments that defy the imagination, surfaces burnt by fire and temperatures that in certain places reach 400 C just a couple of metres below the ground. More than 177 different plant species cling to life and reproduce within the park. Animal life is also to be found in the form of birds reptiles and insects. The eruptions of the 17th and18th centuries transformed the most fertile regions of Lanzarote into a desert of death and desolation burying in their fury entire villages and outlying Hamlets and devastating the population and their crops.

The park is only accessable by coach and it is through a coach window this image was taken.

Flughafen César Manrique - Lanzarote

César Manrique bought this old traditional house in the sixties. At the origin he wanted to use it as a studio but then he decided to restore it and make a restaurarnt out of it.

This restaurant was closed for vacations when we visited Yaiza.

I took this shot in March 2011. I went back to it to reprocess it in Photomatix 5 using the new Fusion Real Estate setting as an illustration for a new tutorial on my Website. Fusion Real Estate is designed for producing natural HDR images of building interiors.

Mirador del Río is a viewpoint situated on an approximately 475 meters high escarpment called Batería del Río in the very north of the Canarian island of Lanzarote.

The location was created in 1974 by the local artist César Manrique in his typical style, consisting of a balustraded cafe, a souvenir shop and a platform on its top. These are integrated in the lava rock.

Mirador der Río provides a stunning view over the strait of Río towards the island of La Graciosa.

I arrived there early enough to get pictures in the Cafeteria without the crowds.

The picture was taken with a Sony A550 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken on a Tripod. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs.
