The beach in Tenerife created by César Manrique.

In the tourist resort of Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island of Tenerife lies Playa Jardín, one of the most famous beaches in the area. It was created in the 90's by the renowned Canarian artist César Manrique with the aim of causing well-being and relaxation in the visitor. The access to the beach alone, via gardens with endemic plant species, small paths between volcanic stone walls and waterfalls, is spectacular and a nice start to a relaxing day on a beach with all amenities and beautiful views of Mount Teide.

Three bays of black volcanic sand in Puerto de la Cruz

Playa Jardín is a black volcanic sand beach divided into three sections: Playa del Castillo, Playa del Charcón and Playa de Punta Brava. A side breakwater protects most of the beach from the surf, but there are also open areas where surfing is permitted. Its promenade connects the beach with the gardens, children's playgrounds, terraces and cafeterias, as well as with the small temple-like building where musical performances take place. Sun beds and umbrellas can be hired on the beach, there are showers, changing rooms and access for people with reduced mobility.

This is an Artwork by the wonderful Cesar Manrique, outside his unique house in Tahiche, Lanzarote. As the wind blows so the arms rotate at quite different rates , presenting a different spectacle every few seconds or so. I was completely "bowled over" by his many spectacular works to be seen on his home island . A number are also mobile works.

Canary Islands. Lanzarote Island. Famara Cliffs, where you'll find El Mirador del Río.

Unsurpassed panoramic views of the entire Chinijo Archipelago and the island of La Graciosa.

The famous narrow stretch of sea known as El Río, which separates Lanzarote from La Graciosa.

One of the most beautiful places to contemplate the horizon at sunset, a magical moment to marvel at one of the beauties that nature provides.

Must get out and take some new photos ... not much going on at the moment though ... same for everyone I guess ... cold too ..

This is the pool at Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote, Spain. The island's most famous artist, César Manrique, had the idea to convert a large lava tube into a tourist attraction that expressed aspects of Lanzarote's character.

The Berlin radio tower (colloquially known as the Long Lulatsch) is a 146.7-meter-high steel lattice tower on the exhibition grounds in Berlin's Westend district and one of the city's landmarks. The broadcasting tower, designed by the architect Heinrich Straumer, was put into operation in 1926 for the 3rd Great German Radio Exhibition in Berlin after two years of construction, making it 43 years older than the Berlin TV tower on Alexanderplatz. The radio tower has been a listed building since 1966.

Fundación César Manrique, Lanzarote.

One of the reasons I visited Lanzarote, is my interest for idiosyncratic architecture. Lanzarote is César Manrique's most important work of art. In the past I explained how much I admire the work of the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The designs of Manrique show some similarities. It is at least as playful and we can also find the feminine curves that Niemeyer used a lot. But unlike the Brazilian, Manriques creations are integrated in the natural landscape and they are notorious for their simplicity.

His desire to live with the volcanic lava led him to build beautiful constructions. He did not create in nature but rather with it, and his relationship with the environment was not simply aesthetic but also a truly exemplary commitment to defending the environment. There is no other Spanish artist whose work is so intimately linked with nature.

The work of Marique and his influence, have marked the external aspect of the island. The natives say that he has "made" Lanzarote.

The stunning Tunnel of Lava at Jameos del Agua in Lanzarote

This Lanzarote underground volcanic tunnel is filled with trapped sea water which reflects colours beautifully. When the roof of a tunnel falls in, as it has the far end, it is called a Jameo. Behind where I was standing is another Jameo which houses a smart restaurant with volcanic walls, and a concert hall. The sea water has rare albino crabs which were trapped when the sea receded following the last volcanic eruption. The tiny crabs are the size of a penny and clearly visible. The attraction was the brainchild of famous local architect, artist, and wind toy designer, Cesar Manrique, who, as a legacy to the people of Lanzarote, ensured important places such as this are preserved. He was a fascinating artist www.cesarmanrique.com/pintura_i.htm

In 1993 Lanzarote was declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.

The Mirador del Río is located on a point 475 meters above sea level on the cliffs of the over 600 meters high Famara massif. Designed in 1973 by the Lanzarote artist César Manrique, with the collaboration of Jesús Soto and the architect Eduardo Caceres, the viewpoint (official opening in 1974), which is integrated into the rock in the typical Manrique style, consists of a parapet above the abyss, a café with large panoramic windows, a souvenir shop and a viewing platform at the top. Right angles were omitted; all rooms are round, including the parking lot, the observation deck and the stairs. (WIKI)

castillo de san jose, arrecife, lanzarote

This is in the Mirador del Rio visitor centre on the northern coast of Lanzarote. It was designed by the artist and architect Cesar Manrique and completed in 1974. All his work is in tune with the volcanic environment and his influence is reflected throughout the island - thanks to him there are no high rise buildings and no advertisement hoardings. It makes such a difference.
