Mirador del Río, de César Manrique (1973), en Lanzarote, frente a la isla Graciosa

www.wolfgangstaudt.de

Mirador del Río is a viewpoint situated on an approximately 475 meters high escarpment called Batería del Río in the very north of the Canarian island of Lanzarote.

The location was created in 1974 by the local artist César Manrique in his typical style, consisting of a balustraded cafe, a souvenir shop and a platform on its top which are integrated in the lava rock.

Mirador der Río provides a stunning view over the strait of "Río" (naming the viewpoint) towards the archaic island of La Graciosa.

From here guards watched for secretly landing ships in former times. Its interiors and balcony areas were used as a location for the BBC television programme Doctor Who's serial, Planet of Fire, representing an alien planet and culture.

Architect: César Manrique & Jesús Soto, 1966-1968, 1987 (lava tube concert hall)

The Jameos del Agua complex is the quintessence of 1960's and 70's cool - a cultural centre, nightclub, museum and concert hall in and around a hollow lava tunnel on the island of Lanzarote.

The term Jameo refers to the partially collapsed roof of the tunnel (formed by flowing lava, which gradually hardens on the outside, leaving the inside hollow), and this particular example features intact, covered parts of the tube and open, courtyard-like spaces.

Inside and around this natural setting, the centre combines nightclubs and dancefloors around a sunken saltwater lagoon inhabited by a rare species of albino crabs, a paradisical pool in the open part which serves as a natural lava-foyer space for the unique concert hall inside the tunnel itself, and a large number of buildings with gardens and roof terraces which house restaurants and bars, a volcanic museum and various arts facilities.

La leyenda cuenta que el día que el actor compró esta casa celebró una fiesta en la que, conocida su afición por los juegos de azar, se jugó también al bridge, puso sobre el tapete su recién adquirida propiedad y...la perdió.

An underground cavern carved out of a lava field - this is Cesar Manrique's home in Lanzarote.

"The Fundación César Manrique is located in the distinctive home that the Lanzarote born artist César Manrique had in Tahíche, and which he shaped after his return from New York. It is a work of art in itself, where nature and architecture fuse into a single piece. A visit to this house, which seems to spring from a sea of lava, is an exceptional experience and helps to understand the artist’s work and message."

Architect: César Manrique 1966, 1992

The artist's former private residence, in Taro de Tahíche near Teguise, was built after his return to Lanzarote from the US. The 3,000 m2 home is more a loose agglomeration of volumes, strewn over a lava field, which disguises the real clou of the design: The six interconnected subterraenian lava bubbles (cavities formed by gas pockets in the molten lava) upon which the house is built, and which serve as a series of indoor and outdoor spaces including a pool patio, gardens and several lounges centered on trees growing through natural skylight openings.

The residence was turned into a museum and home of the Fundación César Manrique in 1992.

This photo of Lanzarote's volcanic landscape was taken from inside the bus showing us around the park (the only way to see any of this).

You can just see the roof of El Diablo Restaurant tucked into the hillside on the left of the photo (they use volcanic heat to cook the meats offered in the restaurant), and another tour bus doing the circuit on the road on the right hand side.

The western coastline is in the distance.

Arrecife Lanzarote

An oasis in the middle of the bay

Located directly across from Arrecife Bay, on the island of Lanzarote, it was in the 1970s that Canarian artist César Manrique transformed this 14,000-square-meter site into a recreational oasis. Among the amenities found in this space of water, vegetation, and vast white spaces are a 3,600-square-meter swimming pool. The center also features a cafeteria with huge windows overlooking the bay. Islote de Fermina takes its name from Fermina García Santana, a pioneering shipbuilder who in 1918 obtained an administrative concession to set up a shipyard on what was then known as Islote del Quebrado. Access to the complex is on foot via a walkway located in the Islas Canarias Park in Arrecife.

César Manrique bought this old traditional house in the sixties. At the origin he wanted to use it as a studio but then he decided to restore it and make a restaurarnt out of it.

This restaurant was closed for vacations when we visited Yaiza.

The Casa-Museo del Campesino architectural complex is a prime example of unique architecture in Lanzarote, showcasing the close relationship between the island's inhabitants and their land. The use of black lava blocks works very well with the white of the architecture, and blue skies are an added bonus (particularly in February).
