These glazed terra cotta tiles are quite large 3 cm thick, 13.7 cm wide and 27.3 cm high. The head may be that of Napoleon Bonaparte and the tiles may be from a building that no longer exists. Possibly French, early 19th century. Does anyone recognize them? Thanks.

Small mosaic, presumably by the urban artist known as "Invader".
Notice that it has a red tilaka Hindu mark on its forehead!
Spotted on a wall in Varanasi (India)

Union Station in San Diego, California, is a train station built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to replace the existing Victorian-style structure erected in 1887 for the California Southern Railroad Company. The Santa Fe Depot (as it was originally designated) officially opened on March 8, 1915, to accommodate visitors to the Panama-California Exposition. The depot was completed during a particularly optimistic period in the City's development, and represents the battle waged by the City of San Diego to become the West Coast terminus of the Santa Fe Railway system’s transcontinental railroad, a fight that was ultimately lost to the City of Los Angeles.
In its heyday, the facility not only handled Santa Fe traffic but also that of the San Diego and Arizona Railway (SD&A) and San Diego Electric Railway (SDERy). The designation was officially changed to San Diego Union Station in response to the SD&A's completion of its own transcontinental line in December 1919. The Santa Fe resumed solo operation of the station in January, 1951 when the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway (successor to the SD&A) discontinued passenger service, the SDERy having ceased operation some two years prior.
The historic Santa Fe Depot is located in Centre City (downtown) San Diego and is still an active transportation center, providing services to Amtrak, the San Diego Coaster, the San Diego Trolley, and the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System bus system. It was the ninth-busiest station in the Amtrak system in FY 2007.[
Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison, Wisconsin. The pavilion is a gift from the Thai government and the Thai Chapter of the Wisconsin Alumni Association to the University of Wisconsin - Madison. The gift of the pavilion was approved by Thailand's royal family; therefore, it bears the Royal seal of the Thai Crown. The University gave the pavilion to the City of Madison, which placed it in Olbrich Botanical Gardens as an ideal setting to share this cultural treasure. The pavilion is only one of four located outside of Thailand. The others are in Germany, Norway, and Hawaii.

The Pump House Demolition Yard is a wonderful place just to have a look around. It is amazing what you can find!
April 29, 2015 Christchurch New Zealand.
The Pumphouse demo yard operates from historic buildings that date from the late 1800s, Originally built to house sewage pumping equipment they now are a home to recycled building materials on their way to a new use. There is constantly stock coming in, from near new double glazing and kitchens to the more traditional bricks and timber.
Created by G F Watts, a Victorian Artist and Sculptor in 1900. It is a 50 feet long open gallery situated in Postmans Park, a very small pubic garden situated in the city of London. It Commemorates ordinary people who died saving the lives of others and who might otherwise have been forgotten.
Along the walls of the gallery Watts placed tablets (ceramic tiles) describing the acts of heroism to save other peoples lives before leading to their own death.
G F Watts only placed four of these tablets on the wall (he had room for 120) before his death in 1904. After this his wife erected a further 53, in 2009 one further tablet was erected.
The image in the centre was created by G F Watts when he set up the gallery. After the title it reads:-
"The material prosperity of a nation is not an abiding possession; the deeds of its people are".
The park now is surrounded by modern offices and housing

Architects: Edgar Miller and Sol Kogen
While working on their Burton Place/Carl Street collaborations, artists Sol Kogen and Edgar Miller also transformed another older site to fit their artist studio idea. They remodeled an 1880s apartment building and two-story stable into duplex studios surrounding an open courtyard. A new front was built in 1928 along with a top addition in 1932. Their artwork includes carved doors and windows, stained glass, decorative plaques and ceramic tiles. To save money, materials were scavenged from construction/demolition sites, failing businesses or purchased from Maxwell Street junk dealers.

My favorite part of this drawer is the mask. It's not even mine- My girlfriend Morgan got it at a music festival this summer. So whenever I look at it I think of the festival she was at, while I was in Philadelphia working with friends on a performance piece at the Philly Fringe Festival. This summer went by way too fast, but it sure felt productive.
Timpson shut its doors on Thursday 29th June 2017 and the shops furnishings were removed on the 10th July. This revealed a number of engraved ceramic tiles which seem to date back to previous occupants of the shop. This is a view of just one of the tiles.
In 1914 the shop was occupied by John Gerrard a boot maker.
In 1927 by Walter Rose ladies tailors and also T Graham tobacco and sweet seller.
In 1955 EA Gillbert traded as The BonBon and was still there in 1973 until Timpson took over.

Image and Identity: Connecting with Islamic Cultures
Ceramic tiles produced during art workshops led by artist Suhair-Al-Khayat with students from George Dixon International School.
Not my normal style of photograph as it's fairly abstract, without a formal composition and main subject. I thought the way the stained glass was reflecting of the hand-made tiles was rather beautiful.
Khan Theological School (aka Imam Gholi Khan Madrasa or Madrasa-i-Khan) was built in 1627. I am not sure if there are additional buildings (I assume there are). We only saw an impressively muqarna*-covered entrance gate, a beautifully domed vestibule, and a lovely courtyard. The courtyard is a classic four-iwan** plan, apparently square, with shallow iwans covered in gorgeous tilework (apparently the same on each side). and was graced with palms, pines, roses, and citrus trees, and a reflecting pool in the center.
I loved that the plantings gave attention to all the senses... the sound of a breeze in pines and palms is a delight, even as their shade refreshes the skin; the scent of roses fills the air and the citrus trees made my mouth water.
To see what the courtyard looked like in 1933, visit ArchNet's pages on the school. Be sure to view the large photos - it's quite fascinating!

*Muqarnas are used in many ways in Islamic architecutre... see this page on Archnet for a full description, history, and references.
**An iwan is a large arched opening in the wall of a courtyard. Usually there are four; sometimes one leads to an interior hall of a mosque. The architectural theme apparently dates from ancient Assyria but became common in Islaimc architecture. The four-iwan plan is commonly used in domestic, religious, and public architecture in Iran and the region.

My sister said, "What are you, a dead person?"
I saw this differently in my head, but I kind of like it. I wasn't going for a "down" feel in my photo today, but I guess what I'm really feeling inside came out.
My nasty bathroom tile inspired me. As did the bathtub that hasn't been used in a year. Gotta love old houses & crappy plumbing.
SECRET #1 // I don't wash my hair every day because it behaves much better when dirty. Yet sometimes, I don't shower because I just don't feel like it. My hair's too much of a hassle.

Frog wall tile: 9 1/2" in diameter.
Greensand clay body with added TSP - Tsp is trisodium phosphate, NaPO4, a cleaner (solubility 1.5 g/100 ml at 25 C and 8.8 g/100 ml at 25 C). The TSP migrates to the surface of the piece during drying and later combines with the iron in the clay body as firing proceeds to form a stable red-orange-brown glaze on the surface of the piece. Without the TSP at the temperature the piece was fired, the clay body would be a very light buff-tan-pink color. Fired to Cone 010 (1652 F/900 C) in an electric kiln. The frog is decorated with an OM-4 ball clay terra sigillata containing chrome and tin oxide.
Yum. This is pretty much a recipe for lo-mein.
16 oz egg noodles (I use linquine)
1 lb protein, diced small or cut into strips
1 lb vegtables cut to appropriate size (can use carrots, celery, snow peas, celery, baby bok choy, cabbage, mushrooms, whatever is available).
4 whole scallions, sliced in half lengthwise then cut into 2 inch lengths
3 - 4 Tbsp peanut or vegetable oil
3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
3 1/4" thick slices ginger
1 Tbsp soy sauce
2-3 Tbsp oyster sauce
1/2 tsp sugar
Marinade for uncooked protein:
2 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp rice wine, 1/2 tsp sugar, 1 Tbsp corn starch, 1/4 tsp white pepper
Coat strips of meat with the marinade. Set aside for 10 - 15 minutes.
Bring pot of water to a boil and cook noodles according to instructions for 1 minute short of al'dente. Drain, set aside.
Heat 2 Tbsp oil over high heat in a wok or skillet. Add ginger slices and saute thirty seconds. Add raw protein and stir fry until almost cooked through. Set aside.
Heat 1-3 tsps (depending on amount of vegetables) oil over medium high heat and stir fry the scallions, garlic, and vegetables. Season with salt and stir fry until vegetables are cooked but still crisp. If you're using pre-cooked protein, add it now and heat through. Set aside cooked veggies and protein in a bowl.
Heat 2 Tbsps oil over medium high heat. Add noodles and stir thoroughly to separate strands. Add more oil if necessary. Fry noodles and flip until some acquire a crunchy golden brown exterior. Season with oyster sauce, soy and sugar mixture.
Add proteins and vegetables and any liquid back into the skillet. Toss thoroughly.
