Made in Japan for Holt Howard. My favourite part of this trivet is the crazy buttons which say "Hippy" "Hippy" "Ye Ye" "Folk Song" "La la la", put them together and they make some crazy lyrics.

The reredos and east wall have tiles by William De Morgan: the central cross is made up of strips of tile glazed in red lustre, and around this are tiles painted in blue, white and yellow with leaves and flowers or the sacred monogram and, at the sides, unusual figurative panels of the Evangelists in mostly blue and white.

The 12 framed mosaic panels, by the children of Public School 41 in conjunction with artist Lee Brozgol (credited as Brozgold but the artist legally changed his name), depict the history of Greenwich Village. Plaques near the panels provide a "key" to who's-who in the 12 mosaic panels (a brochure was also available in a rack near the token booths when the art was first installed but it only had one printing). The names of the panels are: "Bohemians," "Rebels," "Founders" and "Providers."
This mural takes us into Mabel Dodge's salon, where intellectuals, poets, playwrights, and painters gathered together to discuss the burning issues of their time - establishing the Village as a center of social and artistic thought.
This plaque includes: Margaret Anderson, publisher (figure on the far left), Edna St. Vincent Millay, poet (figure on the left), John Sloan, artist (figure on the right), and Floyd Dell, editor (figure on the far right)

Mir Movsum Aga (“The Boneless One”) was a holy man who was believed to have no bones.
The double-domed shrine to Mir Movsum Aga is open 24 hours a day and receives dozens of visitors each day.
You enter on two levels. Women are allowed to enter at ground level, whereas men can take stairs to the raised entrance, which is specifically for men. Both entrances led to a large mirrored room, in the center of which is the tomb, surrounded by decorated grilles. They say that if you circle the tomb seven times, in an anticlockwise direction, thus you ensure that your prayers would come true.
Like many old Portsmouth pubs, "The Mars" is faced with shiny ceramic tiles. In spite of their age (1923) and city grime, they still reflect their surroundings. "Mars" was a 74-gun ship of the line that fought at Trafalgar. She was badly mauled and her captain was decapitated by a cannonball.
For several of the stations built or reconstructed as part of the 1935 - 38 New Works Programme for London Transport (such as Aldgate East or Bethnal Green) a series of 18 relief tiles were commissioned from Harold Stabler - a designer associated not only with London Transport but also Carter's of Poole - the pottery that made the bulk of the tiles. The designs show images associated with London Transport and the area it served.
This tile shows St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London, Wren's masterpiece.
From a 1933 catalogue of tiles and fireplaces by T. A. Simpson & Co. Ltd., Furlong Tile Works, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent. I suspect that the actual fireplace might have looked better in reality than its depiction in this tinted black and white photo.
17th century ceramic tile (azulejo) panel of Saint Cristopher. At the Saint Sebastian chapel, Lumiar, Lisbon.
Detail of the eastern facade of the Carmo church, Porto. The church itself was built between 1756 and 1768 in the baroque/rococo style, on designs by Portuguese architect José Figueiredo Seixas (?- 1773). The panels of tiles that cover the eastern facade were installed in 1912. The were designed by Silvestre Silvestri,- an artist and arts teacher of Italian origin working in Porto - and painted by Carlos Branco.

Photos I took of my dachshunds Jazzy & Harley permanently put on ceramic tiles. My photo doesn't due these lovely tiles justice and not greatest idea setting them up in the grass.
You can really see the China connection here - the shape of the medallion, the shapes of the floral motifs, and the birds, the coloring etc. Not sure which came first or if it was a mutual fertilization but it's very clear. Interesting.
The extensive use of pink reminded me of Chinese "famille rose" color palette, but it was introduced in China at least 100 years after this building was constructed. Perhaps the tiles are a later refurbishment. In any case, the older tiles we saw did not have pink on them.

Khan Theological School (aka Imam Gholi Khan Madrasa or Madrasa-i-Khan) was built in 1627. I am not sure if there are additional buildings (I assume there are). We only saw an impressively muqarna*-covered entrance gate, a beautifully domed vestibule, and a lovely courtyard. The courtyard is a classic four-iwan** plan, apparently square, with shallow iwans covered in gorgeous tilework (apparently the same on each side). and was graced with palms, pines, roses, and citrus trees, and a reflecting pool in the center.
I loved that the plantings gave attention to all the senses... the sound of a breeze in pines and palms is a delight, even as their shade refreshes the skin; the scent of roses fills the air and the citrus trees made my mouth water.
To see what the courtyard looked like in 1933, visit ArchNet's pages on the school. Be sure to view the large photos - it's quite fascinating!

**An iwan is a large arched opening in the wall of a courtyard. Usually there are four; sometimes one leads to an interior hall of a mosque. The architectural theme apparently dates from ancient Assyria but became common in Islaimc architecture. The four-iwan plan is commonly used in domestic, religious, and public architecture in Iran and the region.

The Pump House Demolition Yard is a wonderful place just to have a look around. It is amazing what you can find!
April 29, 2015 Christchurch New Zealand.
The Pumphouse demo yard operates from historic buildings that date from the late 1800s, Originally built to house sewage pumping equipment they now are a home to recycled building materials on their way to a new use. There is constantly stock coming in, from near new double glazing and kitchens to the more traditional bricks and timber.
Many of London's 'improved' housing schemes built by the London County Council have marvellous tiled plaques - this is a rarer Metropolitan Borough Council version. The St Marylebone Council existed from 1900 until 1965 when it was then merged to formed part of the new City Of Westminster.
Check out my 45 sec. video of this and more of the Lodge! "Two special features grace the rim of the Great Lobby...the marble and iron staircase and the original Lodge elevator, an art deco masterpiece. The interior of the elevator walls are walnut with quarter sawn, face matched grain and marquetry panels...an inlay using vari-colored woods. This is the only known surviving, period art deco elevator still in use."
A small section of a larger wall - Placa a los Viajeros Romanticos. Quotes from a number of well known figures who visited Ronda.
Understanding the difference between Vitrified and Ceramic tiles is important to make an informed choice while selecting tiles. Vitrified tiles are long-lasting, low maintenance and scratchproof which make them the best option for your space.

A stunning advert panel in ceramic tiles for the old River Guadalquivir Steamship line that served Seville, Sanlucar de Barrameda and the sea beyond.
One of the most beautiful things to see in Turkey is actually available for everyone to take home. Replicas of these hand painted Iznik tiles found at the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul are widely available at markets throughout the country.
The tiles feature vivid blue carnations and rich red tulips (in a shape that, once you recognize it is a tulip, you wonder how you didn't think that before) on white backgrounds. Often, the motifs are raised relief from the background.
I thought it best not to try to chisel these from the walls and get a few more authentic souvenirs.
