An angel watches over a family in Mt. Hope cemetary.

This is an abandoned cemetary deep in the woods down an abandoned logging road. I happened on this while looking for old kaoline mines for fossils. I just happened to stop to take a leak and barely caught an upraised hand in the distance an

d just a hint of a wrought iron fence. This has the grave of Hayden Hughes consort. The writing on the consorts grave stoicly proclaimes that "here lie the remains" and the word consort is plainly visible. What is unusual is that the more ornate grave has a mariners them and religious symbols such as a cross are noticeably absent. The wrought iren posts have somewhat of a cross but given the lack of markings on the tombstones I'm thinking that this was not purposely ordered but rather what was readily available at the time. This is a very peculiar place and it has been calling me for some time to come capture the imagery of this place.

small, moderately well maintained by a muslim family in a shanty. earliest grave 1832, last grave 1972. not on the tourist maps but my cab driver mentioned it. he also remembers a synagogue on penang road; google tells me it closed in 1976 due to lack of quorum.

Oakdale cemetary. Davenport, Iowa.

Gobyo cemetary in Koyasan. Quite possibly the world's oldest existing cemetary. Numerous paths wind through the cedar grove with secluded glens all along the side. At the back of the cemetary is the shrine and mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, posthumously knowan as Kukai, an ancient bodhisatva who brought the esoteric Shingon (True Word) Buddhist teachings back from China and founded the mission on Mount Koya in 816 A.D. Buddhists bury partial remains or hair here so they can be close to him and be led to enlightenment upon the return of the Buddha of the Future. Kukai now sits in repose in his mausoleum, the Oko-in, not dead, the faithful believe, but still deep in meditation awaiting the coming of the Buddha of the Future. Monks at Oko-in bring him food twice a day.

The area is a mountain redoubt, where eight peaks surround dozens of ancient temples, forming concentric circles in the shape of a lotus blossom. In the morning and evening, mist drapes the peaks, lending a sublime atmosphere to the site.

Looking at the cemetary in Mission San Juan Bautista. At the bottom of the hill is the San Andreas Fault.

Late december sun from Ipswich cemetary.

Quaint dirt road leading to the cemetary at Manzanar. A Japanese internment camp during World War II.

Convinced my dad to take myself and Daisy to the local cemetary to take photos of the old fashioned roses that are planted there. They're at their best in early December, but there were still some out :)

The cemetary at the top of my street.

Cemetary adjacent to ruins at Corinth, Greece.

Abbey cemetary at College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph, Mn. The graveyard is, I believe, for the nuns and monks of the monastery and convent on the campus. I was struck by the uniqueness of the crosses and the play of light across the cemetary.

Even the dead weren't spared from this hurricane. This cemetary down the street from Camp Hope was destroyed.

After leaving Nikko we went to Kyoto, it was kinda rainy, but not all the time, we got lucky sometimes and could at least get out for a bit.
