I shot this image of the moon during the early morning hours before dawn on January 15, 2012. The telescope is a Celestron FirstScope, purchased for $49.00 at B&H Photo.
I attached a Meade 32mm lens to a Sony 7 megapixel digital camera to capture the image. Photoshop Elements 9.0 and iPhoto were used to enhance contrast and details.
I bought this on ebay in this condition. The big glass lens on the opening is called a corrector lens, supposedly it has a slightly concave surface that corrects chromatic aberration. This is a Schmidt-Cassegrain design, and is a terrestrial spotting scope. I can see the front lens was cast, not polished and I can't detect any curvature in the lens. I need to put the largest piece on a surface plate and run a tenths indicator over it. I don't think it has any curvature and in any case I'm just going to replace it with a high quality window glass, after which I get to colminate the whole assembly. I hope it's worth the effort. If things work out I get a 750mm F/6 lens that can be used for all kinds of bird hunting... I paid $40 bucks for it so we shall see...

A primeira Lua!

Heavily cropped, so guiding error is evident. I usually use my beloved NexGuide, but it died on me last night so my buddy let me borrow his StarShoot which I'm not very familiar with.
/*Photo has been replaced with one that I used a defringing tool on (LR4), the chromatic aberration in the previous versions was absolutely horrible. However, most of the CA was in purple and unfortunately some of the tentricles were also purple, so I lost a little color in the nebula but not much considering.*/
My first attempt at using the Celestron Neximage 5 planetary imaging camera. My scope polar alignment was poor, the Moon was still low in the sky (i.e. I was looking through lots of thick turbulent atmosphere) and I think my ETX-90 telescope requires collimiation! Excuses, excuses... I have much to learn and I can do better!
