This is my first post of the new year. We were invited by a foodie for an elaborate dinner in an upscale Chinese restaurant in Fremont, California. Among us were 3 Chinese cooks, well known in the region. Our menu had dishes that were not on the regular menu. It was a yummy feast for us 14 guests sitting at a table with a ginormous Lazy Susan.

I processed a paintery, a realistic, and a photographic HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them, and carefully adjusted the color balance and curves. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Thank you, in advance, to those of you who take a moment to leave a comment and/or fave my photo. I appreciate it tremendously.

This row of lighting can be found near the entrance to the Nixon Library / Museum. I really did love the combination of the natural and 'not so natural' lighting.

The Nixon Library opened on July 20, 1990 at the cost of $22 million and was built and maintained using no taxpayer funds.

The cost after the expansion: $39 million.

The museum grounds include the First Lady’s Rose Gardens, a large reflecting pool and the small frame house, built with his own hands by the President’s father, in which Richard Nixon was born on January 9, 1913.

Located near the birthplace is the gravesite of the President and his First Lady, surrounded by tranquil gardens.

This 9-acre museum can be found in Yorba Linda, California.

remember how she said that we would meet again

some sunny day

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i was inspired by pink floyd -- as i tend to be! -- and decided to portray my interpretation of "vera".

ok, i'm a dork who knows her stuff - vera is vera lynn, who was a singer during ww2. pink floyd (well, roger waters) is referring to her song "we'll meet again" when he asks, "remember how she said that we would meet again some sunny day?" in the film, pink (waters) loses his father in the war, someone he'll never meet again, as vera may have led him to believe. also, vera herself is a bit of an elusive character, since waters (pink) asks "what has become of you?" which implies that she, like her words, are no longer there, either not accessible or not applicable.

it's a sad feeling, because if you reject the belief that "we *will* meet again", you probably are left skeptical and feeling hopeless. in my photo, i tried to create that mood. the despondency, the heartache, the loss.. and it seems to me that those feelings would paint a pretty bleak picture of the future. even though MY vera has her eyes closed, she is not at peace with herself or her situation. instead, i'm having her revisiting memories, remembering the most beautiful times and reliving them over and over again. clinging to the blanket like she does to the past. lastly, i thought that with such a gloomy way of living/thinking, the pitchblack room save for the two floating lights was right on target... tiny lights, swallowed up in the sea of darkness and misery.

aaaand... that's me in the shawl blanket thing, perched atop the glass dining room table. you can't see the table, because it's glass, and the two green things are stone pillars that hold up the glass. i took all the chairs away from the table, switched off every light except for the three that hang from the ceiling over the table - those two (pictured) and another one that i cloned out because it was the closest to the camera, so bigger and kind of obstructive. i like these two little guys hanging out, hovering around me. it makes me look like princess leia :P

i'm actually really pleased with how this came out! pink floyd is my favorite band and i couldn't give them anything but (what i judge to be) my best.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hmm. i'm really happy to explain all of the thoughts, plans, ideas, setting up the stage, etc. that go into my shots. of course i always have these silly mustache shots or grrrawrr clint shots, or just blah "look at my beautiful eyes and lips" close-up shots, but i really love when i try to create a scene. a mood. play a character, one who's real, who's been done a million times, or that i just make up as i go along. the most consistent compliment (at least, i think it is a compliment!) i get from you peeps and others who look at my portfolio is that i create a cast of characters, i put on a show for myself and the camera just happens to be there. i love using props, and i love paying tribute to my literary, artistic & musical heroes and heroines (and obama!), but only if i do it well. i do put an awful lot of pressure on myself, especially for tribute shots; i always end up thinking, well, thom yorke did it better! or whatever.. sometimes my safest bet is to aim for a certain style. noir, or vintage in general, outlandish, ethereal, surreal, rough/raw. i don't know what i'm talking about now, but i'm kind of having this renaissance with my 365... embracing it again, really excited about what i can do next and happy with what i've been doing.

(sorry, london, but you had some weeeeird effect on me! poo faces)

It’s been a while since I have done a set of interpretations of a single capture. This set is based on an image of one of the ornate chandeliers and ceilings in the Brighton Royal Pavilion. The Pavilion was built as a summer pleasure palace for George IV at the turn of the 18th century. It’s a marvellous, fantastical place. The image was taken last November.

There are four images in the set. I’ll link to the in-camera original in a comment as well so that you can see where we started.

V1 - This is a ‘proper’ edit using Capture One and Affinity Photo. This is the basis for the other three versions.

V2 - This version uses Nik Color Efex, which uses all sorts of compounded effects, including a bi-colour filter.

V3 - This version uses Nik Analog Efex to give a double image effect with two copies of the basic shot. The second copy is scaled and zoom blurred a little.

V4 - This version is a play with Topaz Studio 2 using the remix filter to change the colours. I’ll put this one in for Sliders Sunday this week.

I find straight up central chandelier shots interesting. I guess it’s the symmetry and abstraction. This picture reminds me of a spaceship, which is often how my little bear’s brain interprets symmetric abstracts. Perhaps I should have called it Rama 37 or somesuch. The Pavilion has lots of good painted ceilings and chandeliers so I was in a personal playground.

Anyway, part of the fun with these sets is letting you choose your favourite. It’s always interesting how people differ, though often the most popular is the plain edit (a humbling reminder of how easily I waste my time for no purpose, lol).

Thanks for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the set. Happy Sliders Sunday :)

Week 32 | Artificial Lighting

I spotted this beautifully vintage ornate ceiling light while touring the grounds at the historic Pittock Mansion located in Portland, Oregon USA.

I'm not sure if this fits in the realm of controlling light for this week's photo challenge. I noticed that whatever direction I positioned myself, I could capture the light illuminating the chainlink directly above the alabaster copper fixture.

For those who might be interested, this is one of the squeaky clean interiors of The Empire Hotel & Country Club here in Brunei.

I removed a ceiling light fixture, inserted the camera in the glass bowl, and explored the subtle variations when it was backlit by different window light sources.
