Known as the "Queen of the Painted Churches" on the Painted Churches of Texas tour, St. Mary's is grand and elaborate with intricately detailed paintings, a large host of statuary and glittering stained-glass windows. "The Germans have very ornate stained-glass windows, so there is more of a somber, majestic effect," says guide Dianna Zimmerman. A gold web connects the high ceiling centerline to interior columns, with fine scrollwork in between.

While at Photokina I took the chance to visit the cathedra. I love the ceilings and the stained glass. I very rarely do HDR but to get the detail in the ceiling and the windows I needed too bracket my exposure and bring them together in post.

This the ceiling of the Chapter Room at York Minster Cathedral. I laid on my back to take this and still could not capture the whole thing. I brought the wrong lens with me for this kind of photo but the beauty and symmetry of this architectural work of art had to be captured as best it could with the lens I had. The Cathedral Chapter is like a Vestry or board of directors who take care of the business of the cathedral.
