In the Chapel of Princes, in Florence's Medici Chapels, I set the camera on the floor, looking straight up and took this shot using a self-timer.
Malmesbury
Malmesbury Abbey was founded as a Benedictine monastery around 676 AD, by a scholar/poet called Aldhelm, a nephew of the King of Wessex. The town of Malmesbury grew round Abbey.
By the 11th century it was home to the second largest library in Europe and considered one of the leading European seats of learning.
The current Abbey was completed by 1180 AD. The 431 feet tall spire including the tower it was built on, collapsed in a storm around 1500 AD. The collapse destroyed quite a lot of the church, including two thirds of the nave and the transept. As a result of the collapse less than half of the original building stands today.
In 1949 the Abbey was designated as a Grade I listed building. Today the abbey is in use as the parish church of Malmesbury, in the Diocese of Bristol.

Photographic inspiration can strike when you least expect it. I was walking home this evening, but The Sun was still too high in the sky to make for an interesting sunset, or so I thought.
As I was walking over North Bridge, I noticed how the sun was catching the glass roof of Waverley Station. Then all I had to do was try to do the scene justice...which given The Sun was shining directly into my eyes remained a challenge. However, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. :-)

A view of the Saint Gatien Cathedral crossing. The angle of the ribs change depending on the span of each bay - the nave has short bays whereas the transepts' bays are wide giving a lot of space for those windows. Thick piers support the roof.
