The Kitties posed for these gift tags, requested by a friend for a recent lunch date. Celebrating the near completion of a publication, the production of which has taken over all of their lives, the lunch was a welcome break. (The Kitties are still reading the latest draft.)

Lily is the first cat I've had on my own. Soon after she came to live with me in 2009, I started noticing habits that reminded me of the other older kitties. She plays Hide and Seek like Comet. She talks a lot like B.J. and complains like Ashes. Like Norman, she gets a case of the crazies--but only once in a while. And, she tends to curl up into a ball for her naps like Simon.

Of course, Lily has her own fantastic traits and personality, but she reminds me most of The Mother Kitty. Like her, Lily is independent and can act aloof sometimes. I notice her taking over the apartment in her own little way, but she can also be extremely affectionate, so I let her be.

Most often, I see Lily staring like The Mother Kitty. The champion starer, the Mother Kitty could spend hours looking at you and "tell you" exactly what she wants. I don't always figure out what Lily wants, but she is always staring.

You can see the similarities above. Lily must have learned from the best. The Mother Kitty is happy to take some credit but admits that Lily has developed some of her own unique strategies. Who knows what's behind those giant pupils?

One day, The Kitty went behind our piano and four new kittens showed up! Instantly, she became The Mother Kitty.

This drawing was created for my dad's friend Tom to commemorate a significant date in the Philippines. A barbecue among Navy buddies--Tom, Dennis, Joe, Richard, and Ray--it marked a special time in their lives. On this landmark day for space exploration, the end of their military tours was approaching and the excitement of reunions and impending marriages was stirring. This celebration marked new beginnings in world history and among a few friends.... Or, in another light, "it was a party on a nice day with really good food and lots of beer."

I've been moving in slow motion since returning to D.C. after my extra-long weekend at home in Ohio. Whenever I come back from a trip, Lily has plenty to tell me about her days alone in the apartment. I guess it takes both of us a while to get back into our routines. We get there eventually.

When Lily really wants me to get out of bed, she starts to do this in front of our bedroom storage closet. When I open the door, she walks away.

Thanks!

This week, The Kitties headed to The Gulf of Mexico to help with the oil spill cleanup effort. Here, Ashes is conversing with the crabs.

These actions are based on true events, proving Simon's special relationship with water. What it all means remains a mystery.

Last week, Lily felt a bit under the weather, so we made her first trip to the vet's office. I can't say she enjoyed the adventure. (It's too noisy and busy outside, she says, and there were too many people "handling" her in that office!) But a few antibiotics later, she seems back to normal. We'll see how the follow-up visit goes.....( Uh, don't tell her another venture outdoors is coming up. I'm trying to keep her stress-free in the meantime.)

In early April, I spent three days in New York. I attended a couple of fantastic charity concerts, toured the American Museum of Natural History, and saw The Best Man on Broadway.

While I had a wonderful time, Lily was waiting for my return. By the third day, I was eager to return to her too.

I haven't figured out how she knows it's me, but I heard her calling me from down the hall of my apartment.

I told her all about my trip, and she told all about the sounds and shadows she tracked each day while I was gone.

And, now, everything's back to normal.

This week's topic stumped me, so I turned the markers over to The Kitties and told them to modify themselves however they wanted. (I see that some of the artistes tested out their ideas on themselves before committing them to paper....)

Norman just made himself fatter so that he could fit in more food (a practical modification, he said). I think Gordon went for some sort of late '70s/early '80s Glam Rock look. Simon--who, I should explain, has been celebrating the anniversary of Woodstock and listening to lots of reggae lately--decided to use all of the markers. The Mother Kitty sees no reason to experiment with her beautiful blank canvas. She did make one change, however, which she is convinced gives her the ultimate sense of mystery and will confuse everyone. B.J. turned himself into his favorite distant relative, the tiger. And, while I thought Comet just drew a picture of Ashes, he actually drew himself with her shiny black coat--just to see what it's like, he said. No one is exactly sure what Ashes was aiming for. She's quite pleased with that reaction and refuses to explain it.

This week, The Kitties headed to The Gulf of Mexico to help with the oil spill cleanup effort. Norman was the only one crazy enough to go deep sea diving to check things out. Here, he finds some safe schools of fish.

Gordon needs no excuse to don his Captain Jack Sparrow outfit! Mother Kitty was not as eager to participate in this week's adventure.

The Kitties love visiting their favorite animals at the zoo! The Mother Kitty is partial to polar bears, and Gordon has always had a kinship with the lemurs. Comet, BJ, and Ashes like to have philisophical discussions with the big kitties. Norman, as always, is hungry. And Simon, who has made some new friends, isn't sure when he'll be leaving.

The Kitties and I are addicted to "So You Think You Can Dance!" So, they all fought over who would participate in this week's drawing. But the choice was obvious, since Ladies' Man, B.J., is the only one proficient in Tango and promptly swept The Mother Kitty off her feet. The others are busy practicing for when the spotlight turns to them.

In the mornings and evenings as Julie gets ready for work or bed, Ashes waits in the bathroom for some "me" time and a drink from the faucet. If Julie takes too long getting there, she'll start complaining and kicking her water bowl around.

Here, we haven't gotten to that point yet. Just wait.

This drawing of my cat (dinosaur) took around 60 hours to complete. pencil sketch #5

You all know our theory that Simon is Rajon Rondo of The Boston Celtics. (It's no surprise that this hasn't caught on. Simon is always incognito at the games, after all.) Here, he demonstrates Rajon's "Get Out of My Way!" play, with typical precision, seconds before the shot clock expires! Way to go, Simon! I mean, way to go, Rondoooooooo!!!!!

When the living room window is open, Lily spends most of the day bathing in the breeze. Every so often, she freezes at the sight of something in the sky. She never tells me what she sees, and it never deters her from the task at hand. That's a cat for you.

When Lily first arrived, I bought her lots of toys. It turns out, I didn't have to because all she needs is an old pen cap. But, it wasn't all a waste--Her trusty Wubbas never seem to fail to grab her attention.

One time, I moved some of the kittens to a different spot without checking with The Mother Kitty. She gave me a look and carried them back. I never did it again.

Every spring, Simon turns into a deer and bounds all over the yard. I stuck some cherry blossoms in there since I just saw them last weekend. ...And I added a few more flowers here and there... Okay, this isn't really our yard.

Everyone but The Mother Kitty seems to be in on the secret... (Don't worry, she always finds out eventually.)

After I returned home from a classical music concert at the Strathmore, I told The Kitties all about Prokofiev's powerful "Romeo and Juliet." (Well, OK, Gordon was more interested in the Radiohead portion of the concert, but....) They were all so taken by it, that they decided to revisit the play on the spot. The leads were obvious, even though Comet hasn't yet learned his cues...or his lines.

This week, The Kitties headed to The Gulf of Mexico to help with the oil spill cleanup effort. Like everyone, The Mother Kitty was mortified when she saw the images of the pelicans smothered in oils. She got straight to work!

Dad and I are convinced that Simon is playing for the Boston Celtics under the alias "Rajon Rondo." He disappears during each game and then reappears hours later in our garage sweaty, panting, and ready for a nap. Seeing him "play" in the driveway only whets our suspicions. Only time can tell how long his disguise will last.

I'm nearly finished reading An Object of Beauty, Steve Martin's novel about the art world. Because of it, my first thought upon seeing this week's Illustration Friday topic, mysterious, was a work of art--with all its interpretations. Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, with her mischievous smile, specifically came to mind.

Well, only one cat that can rival the mystery of that lady. Scholars are still debating.

i did this using a HB pencil. no other shades.

Pirate Johnny is on Facebook at Panera. I was having fun with concept photography. The cat was there when we got there.

The Mother Kitty is ready to come in.

Gordon just got back from the Sahara Desert, so The Kitties gathered to hear about his travels. Upon summoning the Kitty Genie, Norman guessed that Gordon's third wish was for three more wishes. Why doesn't everyone do that?

(For a crazy cat, he is smart sometimes. But there must be rules.)
