Back to work!!
My day job for the last fifteen years has been in the Telecom industry. The engineering firm I worked for felt the squeeze of our economy, plunging me back into the job market last November. Today, I was hired by a local company owned by two friends. I will be back doing field work starting on Monday. I am looking forward to working for these guys and excited to be back to work.
I shot this for the cover of the documentation binder from a project I worked on last summer.

This is the front of a typical Ethernet patch panel. The patch panel connects the switch to the building wiring.
This is the rear of a voice patch panel. You can tell it is a voice patch panel because the cable terminations do not maintain a tight twist like data cables (ie Cat5e and Cat6) have to in order to maintain speeds and reduce crosstalk.
The old network consisted of 2x 5port gigabit switches, 1 dlink adsl router and a seperate dlink wireless-N access point with 5 gigE ports. As my flat had phone cable runs to various rooms carried out in Cat5 cable I swapped the faceplates and added some rj45 connectors, which meant we now had a pair of gigabit ethernet wall sockets too. Given that we were using yet another 5port gigE switch in the living room, I decided to install a 4port Ethernet wall plate and run new Cat6 cables through the wall in to the network cupboard, Obviously daisy chaining switches together isn't a long term solution so on counting up the ports I decided to get a 16port gigabit switch, enough for all the wall sockets, access points and server connections with 2 to spare.

This room holds 10-15 people.
Includes: high-def projector, surround sound audio, table-top plugs (Cat6, AC power, VGA), 4'x8' whiteboard.
The cables will run to the cabin behind the trees. I was originally planning to make an insulated box for my computer in the observatory and run it over wifi with VNC on my iPad, but due to various reasons I decided to try a USB-extender over Cat6 from Icron. It might prove hazardous in sub-zero temperatures, but I'll put the observatory hub in a box together with various power supplies so they can keep each other warm.
The Be Box needs 18V AC, the multimeter says 21V on the power supply and the same after it's been through about 8 meters of cat6 cable.
We ran Cat 6 ethernet cable throughout our whole house, for a total of 34 connections. A detailed explanation of the process can be found at home.kellbot.com/2012/03/09/wiring-the-house-for-ethernet/

This is where the Voice and Data cabling enter the telecom room. The yellow and orange cables are Cat6 with a 10/100/1000Mbps and the blue and green cables are the voice cables connected to a Definity G3.

Update Sept 13 2011, Added a few filler panels and rearranged every thing to prepare for future expansion. Also did better cable management and routed entire house's network through the rack to have a centralized switch instead of satellite switches.
3x Cisco Catalyst 3560 switches, almost full.
Most of the ports are connections in classrooms (3 IT suites, a dozen regular teaching rooms) and offices; but some of them are older copper links to other switch cabinets but still used.
It could also be a bit tidier if we had some better cable management accessories but it'l do ;-)
These rails are AMAZING, I never once had to touch a tool for my entire installation, and the server just glides along them!
