The coax is for the internet, it goes to the router. He said some installs use a cat5 instead, but 9/10 they use a coax run.

The ATEN PS/2 KVM Console Extender allows access to computer system or KVM Switch from remote console (keyboard, monitor, and mouse) from up to 1000ft. (300m) away, via a CAT5e cable. This unit is perfect for moving console away from computer or KVM Switch. Your console can be moved across room or hall, out of server room, or anywhere where it is most convenient. It is also useful for security and monitoring purposes where you can have system unit in a secure area while console is in most convenient location for user access and monitoring.

Your network cable, your crimper, and a 8P8C plug. I always called that an RJ45 plug. But I guess it isn't. Google 8P8C and Wiki.

Here is my new nice and tidy phone/cable/network box thanks to Shane at SED.

Would love to have the opportunity to take my camera into work, but for some reason major financial institutions are a bit touchy about having their data centers photographed :)

I just ripped it out of the kitchen phone point here to start ripping it up! YAY!***

After 3 years I FINALLY got my shit together and had an electrician come out and finish the wiring for my computer.

The problem has been that the only phone point in house is in the kitchen and my study, computer and modem/router are all at the other end of the house. I have been running my ADSL connection all the way through the house so had a net connection. This has been stuck down with silver duct tape for YEARS!

What you can't see here is 30m of Cat 5 cable running from the study, all the way back up to the lounge near the kitchen to connect to my media box (which connects to the giant LCD tv with internet connection).

The lovely sparky through a phone point in the study and ran my cat 5 through the ceiling cavity and down the internal wall to my media pc.

It took 2 bloody hours with gloves, cotton wool balls and methylated spirits and eucalyptus oil to remove all the sticky crap.

But wow - house looks wonderfully weird without that duct tape now. And not to mention, significantly easier to clean. Sorry about the feral floor - but cbf cleaning this week til this had been done.

YAY!

A pattern for your patch cords. We made it nice and big so it doesn't get confusing.

I had to be up bright any early today. Time warner was coming out to set up our cable tv and internet access. Say what you will about time warner cable when they make an appointment they are usually pretty punctual. The set up took quite a awhile but now i am online and set to go. For some reason i could not find the ac apapter for my linksys switch. I looked high and low but it's no where to be found. I was forced to take a trip out to walmart and i picked up a new cisco wireless router. Set up was easy enough and now we are wireless for who ever comes by or if we decide to set up a xbox 360 or a ps3 online. quite exciting. Im loving my new apt i just wish all the unpacking was done.

A close-up shot of one of my LAN cables

Today I gave training to a group of engineers at work. Snapped this photo on my way out the door. For those of you that are cool and not nerdy like me, this is a cat(egory) 5 cable. It sounds crazy, but generally it's what connects the world and makes things like Flickr possible. While Cat 5 cable doesn't form the backbone of the internet by any stretch, it's generally the last mile for most wired users in corporate environments.

There's an excellent writeup about the advent of the internet that I read a few years ago. When you think about it, it's a pretty amazing time to be alive. In 1000 years, if humanity still exists, our ancestors will look back on the early 21st century as a time when mankind became united by one ubiquitous network and when we first started to reach beyond the rock we evolved on.
