Side view showing construction and Makedo connectors.

Deer puppet made from recycled common household materials, and Makedo connectors.

Makedo had asked if I would love to create with their product, and I gladly said yes! I have no financial gains from promoting company or products. My inner child has been having a lot of fun with this construction "toy."

Materials used-- Recycled:

- 1 64 oz orange juice carton

- 2 aqua color drink straws

- 3 empty paper towel rolls

(one was cut in half for the neck, the 2 other rolls were cut in half for the legs)

- 1 wooden popsicle stick to stabilize the head better

Other Materials and Tools used:

- Fiskars micro tip scissors (for the tail details)

- regular sturdy scissors for the box cutting

- craft knife for the slits the ears fit into

- clear packing tape for added stability to some joints and cuts

- staple and staplers to connect the legs to the body

- Makedo clips, hinge and connectors (the teal blue and black thingys)

Miss Lily was very interested in the kaleidoscope so we took it apart so she could see how it was made.

Use a long tube, 3 long mirrors or anything fairly stiff and reflective. The cardboard ring holds the mirrors in. The plastic container has shiny confetti in it. It fits in the end of the cardboard tube with the cover facing out. The cover works as a diffuser so the confetti shows against it. Hold it up to light.

These were kits I used many ears ago with third and fourth grade girls. We were lucky and got them donated.

I'm hoarding cardboard tubes again.

I rarely find anything useful to do with them, but I feel a compulsion to keep them until so many pile up that in a fit of frustration I discard them all at once... followed by remorseful wondering: what if I need one for something?

1 July - A Doll A Day 2024

To create a manger for baby Jesus, I cut a toilet paper roll in half lengthwise, then used double-sided tape to connect the two pieces.

This is an upcycled toilet paper roll, turned into Jesus for a green nativity scene. I cut a roll in half, then glued on some fabric so that it would look like a swaddled baby. Lastly, I drew on the face with markers.

This is an upcycled toilet paper roll, turned into Mary for a green nativity scene. I glued fabric over 2/3rds of the roll for a robe, then glued on a light-colored fabric to be the head scarf. Lastly, I drew the face with markers.

This photo is of an installation currently on the UNSW campus in Kensington. It is meant to be both a public space and an art installation, and I can't help thinking that our city streets would be far more enjoyable if there was a bit more visual interest on them. It is made out of cardboard tubes and plywood and built by students at the school of built design.

I edited this one slightly as the bright sun had made it appear washed out. I thought the sepia look suited the colour of the cardboard tubes.

A picture of my Jeep through a cardboard tube. Why would I do this? Why do I do anything?

Half of toilet paper tube I recrafted into a pen/pencil holder that could be stuck at the side of the computer monitor, CPU or wall. Could hold 2 pens/pencils. Cardboard covered by yuzen washi.
