One day I was trying to capture a bird in my hedge and when I looked at my photo, this is what I saw!?? I had taken the photo through my window, but there was nothing of this shape on it. The 'apparition' seems to resemble a squirrel ... I have no idea what it was (some reflection?), but I thought it might be fitting to post it for Halloween! 👻

There are landmarks every landscape photographer wants to shoot, and Mobius Arch is one of them. The arch simply looks gorgeous with the ragged peaks of the Eastern Sierra in the backdrop.

A quick online search will reveal that most Milky Way nightscapes from Mobius Arch are captured from a lower and more westerly position than the famous daylight or sunrise shots. From this perspective, the arch still looks nice, but the view of the mountains is blocked by the surrounding rocks, making the composition less impressive. Unfortunately, the Milky Way core doesn't align with the Sierras behind the arch.

I shot Mobius Arch in this composition during previous visits but wasn't impressed by the results. That's why I tried to do things differently during my last visit in April 2022.

For this image, I captured Mobius Arch from its back side. From this position, the Milky Way bow perfectly aligns with the completely different but still nice-looking arch.

To my surprise, I haven't been able to find any images of Mobius Arch from this side, even though I was convinced that it has been shot from every possible angle thousands of times. If I really found a new perspective of this famous place, I entitle myself to give it a new, secondary name. For obvious reasons, I call it 'Sisyphus Arch'.

An image captured one early afternoon in Denali State Park while walking the Byers Lake Trail. This was a view looking downstream (southwest) across Byers Creek at a pedestrian bridge crossing. What I was wanting to capture with this image was the creek itself with the forest all around. The creek would act as that leading line going further or deeper into the image while the greens and yellows of the forest would add a frame to focus that view. The skies above, with that slight hint of blue, would then act as a color contrast to complement the colors below. I did some initial post-processing work making adjustments to contrast, brightness and saturation while playing around as I learned how to work with DxO PhotoLabs 3 that I’d recently purchased after moving away from Capture NX2.

Finally invested in Capture one, this is my first output

Happy Fence Friday!

In the north of Iceland, in late February this year. For granted, places of splendid beauty like this are not a view from our window for most of us. But when we do see them, they get photographed - time and again!

When I heard a 70 approaching Mill Lane Junction, Northampton, I was almost excited. However, when the train came into view, I was utterly disappointed, as it was virtually empty. I would usually refuse to take a photograph of such a train, leaving them instead for John Tomlinson, but as I had been starved of railway shots of late, tried something a little different.

It is hard to capture the full depth of the cascades as one only get to view it from the top of the cliff down to the ravine. Making it looks flat at this angle.

This image of the black rhino was captured as he came down to the water whole just as the sun was beginning to go down. We were so thrilled that he came when he did because there was just enough sun to get a few images and then it was gone. Such awesome creatures and to know they were endangered we felt fortunate to have seen them and so close.
