The Dornier Do 31 is an experimental vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) jet-propelled transport designed and produced by West German aircraft manufacturer Dornier.
The development of the Do 31 was motivated principally by heavy interest expressed by the German Air Force in the acquisition of short take-off and vertical landing aircraft (STOVL)-capable aircraft. Such ambitions received a further boost from the issuing of NATO specification NBMR-4, which called for a VTOL-capable tactical support aircraft that would be operated in conjunction with the EWR VJ 101, a West German VTOL strike aircraft designed under the NATO contract of BMR-3. A total of three aircraft, two flight-capable and one static airframe, were constructed and used for testing. On 10 February 1967, the Do 31 performed its maiden flight; the first hovering flight of the type took place during July 1967.
In addition to performing test flights, Dornier often demonstrated the Do 31 prototypes to officials and the general public, such as at the 1969 Paris Air Show. Several world records were set by the type during its limited flying career. When the high cost, technical and logistical difficulties of operating such an aircraft were realized, the German Air Force opted to cease trials involving VTOL aircraft, such as the Do 31, VJ101, and the later VFW VAK 191B. In the face of limited sales prospects and a lack of state support, the Do 31 and other VTOL projects lingered as research projects for a time prior to their manufacturers abandoning all activity. The Do 31 remains the only VTOL-capable jet-powered transport aircraft to ever fly.
Common kestrels measure 32–39 cm (13–15 in) from head to tail, with a wingspan of 65–82 cm (26–32 in). Females are noticeably larger, with the adult male weighing 136–252 g (4.8–8.9 oz), around 155 g (5.5 oz) on average; the adult female weighs 154–314 g (5.4–11.1 oz), around 184 g (6.5 oz) on average. They are thus small compared with other birds of prey, but larger than most songbirds. Like the other Falco species, they have long wings as well as a distinctive long tail.
Their plumage is mainly light chestnut brown with blackish spots on the upperside and buff with narrow blackish streaks on the underside; the remiges are also blackish. Unlike most raptors, they display sexual colour dimorphism with the male having fewer black spots and streaks, as well as a blue-grey cap and tail. The tail is brown with black bars in females, and has a black tip with a narrow white rim in both sexes. All common kestrels have a prominent black malar stripe like their closest relatives.
The cere, feet, and a narrow ring around the eye are bright yellow; the toenails, bill and iris are dark. Juveniles look like adult females, but the underside streaks are wider; the yellow of their bare parts is paler. Hatchlings are covered in white down feathers, changing to a buff-grey second down coat before they grow their first true plumage. Kestrels don’t lay all their eggs at once. They lay eggs every few days to increase the chance of at least some of them surviving. It’s the female that
incubates them, while the male brings food. The young can be capable of leaving the nest by the end of summer.
Great Spotted Woodpecker - Dendrocopus Major
The great spotted woodpecker occurs in all types of woodlands and is catholic in its diet, being capable of extracting seeds from pine cones, insect larvae from inside trees or eggs and chicks of other birds from their nests. It breeds in holes excavated in living or dead trees, unlined apart from wood chips. The typical clutch is four to six glossy white eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs, feed the chicks and keep the nest clean. When the young fledge they are fed by the adults for about ten days, each parent taking responsibility for feeding part of the brood.
The great spotted woodpecker occurs in Eurasia from the British Isles to Japan, and in North Africa from Morocco to Tunisia, and it is absent only from those areas too cold or dry to have suitable woodland habitat. It is found in a wide variety of woodlands, broadleaf, coniferous or mixed, and in modified habitats like parks, gardens and olive groves. It occurs from sea-level to the tree line, up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft) in Europe, 2,200 m (7,200 ft) in Morocco and 2,500 m (8,200 ft) in Central Asia.
The great spotted woodpecker became extinct in the island of Ireland in the seventeenth century, due to deforestation, but the island was naturally recolonised by this species, with the first proven nesting in County Down in 2007. Its expansion in range is continuing, with breeding proven or suspected in at least 10 counties by 2013, with the main concentration in Down and County Wicklow. Genetic evidence shows the birds to be of British, rather than Scandinavian, ancestry, with the populations in Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic having separate origins. The great spotted woodpecker was also found to have been nesting in the Isle of Man from 2009.

Important to know: Iguanas are capable of severely injuring people, other animals and themselves when their body language signals are not recognized. Most iguanas clearly sign that trouble is ahead. They nod their head and wave their dewlap side to side. The dewlap is a fold of loose skin hanging from the neck or throat of an animal, such as a cow.
Iguanas use their dewlap to communicate. First, an extended dewlap can simply be a greeting, away to say hello to another creature during mating but most generally as a territorial sign. Second, it can be a form of protection. A threatened iguana may extend its dewlap to intimidate a predator into thinking it is much larger than it is. Third, an extended dewlap may be a sign that the iguana is trying to adjust its temperature. An extended dewlap on an iguana basking in the sun is quite normal. It may be catching more sun to warm up or a breeze to cool off. So it's important to see "the big picture" when reading Iguana body language.

Taken when the snow was melting and a rare foggy morning. Its is an area above my little favourite woodland. It now has protected status too. This area was used during the second world war to house Italian prisoners of war so the history here is very varied. There are far reaching views facing the opposite way...truly panoramic but not particularly spectacular.

We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done.
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
You show me everything my heart is capable of
There goes my heart again
All of this time I thought we were pretending
Nothing looks the same when your eyes are open
Now you're playing these games to keep my heartbeat spinning You show me love, you show me love
You show me everything my heart is capable of
You reshape me like butterfly origami-yeah
You have broken into my heart
This time I feel the blues have departed
Nothing can keep me away from this feeling
I know I am simply falling for you
I'm taking time to envision where your heart is
And justify why you're gone for the moment
I tumble sometimes, looking for sunshine
And you know this is right when you look into my eyes
You show me love, you show me love
You show me everything my heart is capable of
And now I can't break away from this fire that we started
You have broken into my heart
This time I feel the blues have departed
Nothing can keep me away from this feeling
I know I am simply falling for you,
There my heart goes again
In your arms I'm falling deeper
And there's nothing to break me away from this
Sometimes I do photograph modern trains. A pair of RhB ZTZEMUs have just met at Litzirüti and are now headed for Arosa and Chur. The ZTZ EMUs are capable of hauling several coaches on the lines steep grades, so atleast one still has the chance to ride in a proper open window coach.

So, its official, 2022 was the warmest year on record. During last summer water levels at Cornwall’s largest reservoir dropped dramatically. A fall that continued, despite spells of heavy rain, throughout the autumn. Capable of holding more than 28,500 megalitres of water, water levels at Colliford Lake on Bodmin Moor were, as we headed into winter, at little more than 20% of its capacity - a low water level not seen since 1995.
The reservoir, which covers an area equivalent to more than 680 football pitches, came up against some opposition at its planning stage in 1976, with local farmers set to lose almost 1,000 acres of agricultural land. But with compulsory purchases made and a huge dam built, water from the River St Neot was allowed to flood the fields and marshland until it reached full capacity in 1983.
The fallen water level has revealed a forgotten landscape that has not been seen for decades. Before the water flooded the fields of Redhill, Menniridden, Stuffle and Colliford Downs, archaeologists surveyed the landscape and excavated sites around the lake bed. 40 years later, the evidence of the medieval field systems, farms, tin mills and clay pits that they found, have once again revealed themselves.

The Masai giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis tippelskirchi), also spelled Maasai giraffe or named Kilimanjaro giraffe, is the largest subspecies of giraffe and the tallest land mammal. It is found in Kenya and Tanzania.
No breeding season is noted for the Masai giraffe. Females typically can breed from the age of 4. They give birth standing up. Giraffes give birth after 2–6 hours of labor. About 50–75% of the calves die in their first few months due to predation.
Though many calves die, the mothers stab predators such as hyenas or lions with their sharp hooves. This can critically injure or kill a predator quickly; the Masai giraffe's kick is strong and is capable of crushing a lion's skull or shattering its spine.
Reddish are extremely capable at catching fish. They are tall in the shallows and often use their large wings as shade to help see into the water, sometimes running, jumping or hovering to track their prey. Once they dart their head into the water they almost always come up with a fish. I’m also surprised by how much they eat. They can go on for an hour catching fish after fish. Eventually, however, they either fly off or walk onto the sand for a break. Say something like 30 minutes passes, they poop and get back to fishing. Scientific name: Buteo buteo.
Feeding: Buzzards are big birds, more than capable of taking sizeable birds and animals but, more often than not, they will target smaller prey. Rabbits are an important food source, and the birds suffered during the height of myxomatosis, but they will also take smaller mammals. Compared to all other raptors, Buzzard’s digestive systems are able to deal with a poor-quality diet and, in winter when other prey is hard to find, they are able to feed mostly on earthworms, beetles and other small invertebrates. These will be hunted on foot, and you can find Buzzards regularly sitting on the ground. In favoured fields, large numbers can gather and, although somewhat tolerant of each other, disagreements will break out if individuals get too close to others. In certain areas, usually in the uplands, Buzzards may hover when searching for food. Info: Hawk and Owl Trust.

Madurai (India) - Tailors are the undisputed stars of the Pudhu Mandapam market, located in an ancient desecrated temple. They are able to make any garment for you. You choose your fabric, and the tailor takes your measurements. One hour later the order is ready. You try it on and within minutes the tailor makes the final adjustments and cuts off the excess threads. It is important to negotiate the price well before placing an order because in front of the success of the place, you can have surprises. In 2012, a made-to-measure shirt in a fabric of your choice cost no more than ready-to-wear. When I came back at the end of 2017, the prices had tripled.
In this photo taken in the morning, the tailors were starting to open their shops. The man prepares his sewing machine before the customers arrive.
The Cathedral of Theodosius of Chernigov is one of the youngest temples in Kiev, however, during its existence, it managed to turn into one of the city's attractions.
The history of the temple of Theodosius of Chernigov begins in 1986, when settlers from Chernobyl and Pripyat, cities affected by the Chernobyl disaster, began to come to the Belichi residential area. New settlers had to become parishioners of the Church of St. John the Baptist, but its size did not allow everyone to visit it, and another church simply did not exist here. For this reason, the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident and their family members drew up a petition to the authorities, which indicated the need to perpetuate the memory of the victims. Only in 1994, at the place where Chernobylskaya Street and Pobedy Avenue intersect, erected a monument consecrated by Metropolitan Volodymyr.
At the same time, an idea was expressed to build a chapel named after the patron saint of the liquidators of the accident, Theodosius of Chernigov. In April 2001, the foundation stone of the future church was solemnly laid. At first, it was planned to erect a relatively small building, only 3x5 meters, but gradually the plan changed and as a result a real temple was obtained, capable of accommodating 200 people at a time, although, according to community members, this is completely insufficient. Officially, the temple began its work in September 2002, but even during the construction, various rituals were held.
Since most of the parishioners of the church are in one way or another connected with the accident at a nuclear power plant, among the people of Kiev it is often called “Chernobyl”
Sparrowhawk - Accipiter Nisus
Double click....best viewed large.
Though it is a predator which specialises in catching woodland birds, the Eurasian sparrowhawk can be found in any habitat and often hunts garden birds in towns and cities. Males tend to take smaller birds, including tits, finches, and sparrows; females catch primarily thrushes and starlings, but are capable of killing birds weighing 500 g (18 oz) or more.
The Eurasian sparrowhawk is found throughout the temperate and subtropical parts of the Old World; while birds from the northern parts of the range migrate south for winter, their southern counterparts remain resident or make dispersive movements. Eurasian sparrowhawks breed in suitable woodland of any type, with the nest, measuring up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) across, built using twigs in a tree. Four or five pale blue, brown-spotted eggs are laid; the success of the breeding attempt is dependent on the female maintaining a high weight while the male brings her food. The chicks hatch after 33 days and fledge after 24 to 28 days.
The probability of a juvenile surviving its first year is 34%, with 69% of adults surviving from one year to the next. Mortality in young males is greater than that of young females and the typical lifespan is four years. This species is now one of the most common birds of prey in Europe, although the population crashed after the Second World War. Organochlorine insecticides used to treat seeds before sowing built up in the bird population, and the concentrations in Eurasian sparrowhawks were enough to kill some outright and incapacitate others; affected birds laid eggs with fragile shells which broke during incubation. However, its population recovered after the chemicals were banned, and it is now relatively common, classified as being of Least Concern by BirdLife International.
The Eurasian sparrowhawk's hunting behaviour has brought it into conflict with humans for hundreds of years, particularly racing pigeon owners and people rearing poultry and gamebirds. It has also been blamed for decreases in passerine populations. The increase in population of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk coincides with the decline in House Sparrows in Britain. Studies of racing pigeon deaths found that Eurasian sparrowhawks were responsible for less than 1%. Falconers have utilised the Eurasian sparrowhawk since at least the 16th century; although the species has a reputation for being difficult to train, it is also praised for its courage. The species features in Teutonic mythology and is mentioned in works by writers including William Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Ted Hughes.
Male Eurasian sparrowhawks regularly kill birds weighing up to 40 g (1.4 oz) and sometimes up to 120 g (4.2 oz); females can tackle prey up to 500 g (18 oz) or more. The weight of food consumed by adult birds daily is estimated to be 40–50 g (1.4–1.8 oz) for males and 50–70 g (1.8–2.5 oz) for females. During one year, a pair of Eurasian sparrowhawks could take 2,200 house sparrows, 600 common blackbirds or 110 wood pigeons. Species that feed in the open, far from cover, or are conspicuous by their behaviour or coloration, are taken more often by Eurasian sparrowhawks. For example, great tits and house sparrows are vulnerable to attack. Eurasian sparrowhawks may account for more than 50% of deaths in certain species, but the extent varies from area to area.
Males tend to take tits, finches, sparrows and buntings; females often take thrushes and starlings. Larger quarry (such as doves and magpies) may not die immediately but succumb during feather plucking and eating. More than 120 bird species have been recorded as prey and individual Eurasian sparrowhawks may specialise in certain prey. The birds taken are usually adults or fledglings, though chicks in the nest and carrion are sometimes eaten. Small mammals, including bats, are sometimes caught but insects are eaten only very rarely.

Capable of holding their breaths for up to 20 minutes, Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are highly adapted to live in and around water. For instance, their fur is waterproof, with a grid-like guard layer protecting the soft and cozy underfur from the course wear of the outer layer of fur. Their lips actually close behind their incisors, allowing them to gnaw plant material underwater without getting a mouthful of pond. These predominantly vegetarian creatures live in elaborate burrows that they dig under the water in riverbanks. These excavated tunnels lead to dry chambers and air vents that are typically calculated to come up in shrubs, so as not to be found!

I am capable of creating hundreds of such landscapes, which leads me to ponder the evolving significance of photographing landscapes. With the advent of AI-generated landscapes, the straightforwardness and novelty of capturing natural scenes through traditional photography begin to fade. In the past, photography was regarded as a means to preserve and immortalize the beauty of landscapes. It allowed us to capture a moment in time, freezing the essence of a place forever. However, as AI advances and creates astonishingly realistic landscapes, the need for photography as a mere replication of reality becomes less apparent. AI can generate an endless array of landscapes, each unique and crafted with meticulous detail. These digitally created scenes possess a remarkable realism that rivals traditional photography. They offer a seemingly infinite palette of possibilities, where one can explore fantastical realms, reimagine familiar landscapes, or even create entirely new environments. With AI-generated landscapes at our disposal, we are no longer confined to capturing what already exists. We can now delve into the realm of imagination and bring to life scenes that transcend the boundaries of reality. This shift challenges us to redefine the purpose of landscape photography. Instead of aiming to capture the objective reality of a place, photography can become a tool for personal expression and storytelling. It can be a means to convey emotions, evoke memories, or communicate a unique perspective on the world. Photographers can now focus on capturing the fleeting moments, the play of light and shadow, or the human elements that interact with the landscapes. Furthermore, photography can serve as a source of inspiration for AI algorithms. By capturing real landscapes through the lens, photographers can contribute to the training data that informs the creation of AI-generated landscapes. It becomes a symbiotic relationship between human creativity and technological advancement, where each influences and enhances the other. In this evolving landscape of artistic creation, the role of photography is transformed. It is no longer solely about replication, but about interpretation, personal vision, and pushing the boundaries of visual storytelling. While AI-generated landscapes offer incredible possibilities, they cannot replace the human eye and the unique perspective that each photographer brings to their craft. Ultimately, the significance of photographing landscapes lies in the power to capture the intangible essence of a place, to tell stories, and to evoke emotions. It is a realm where artistry, imagination, and technology intersect, forging new paths for creative expression.

Happy Caturday! More lion cubs in the first comment section.
Lionesses give birth to 2-3 cubs at a time. Usually, a couple females give birth around the same time. The cubs are then raised together, sometimes nursing communally.
Lioness with cubs are vulnerable to predators like hyenas, leopards, and black-backed jackals, cubs have a 60-70% mortality rate. They are sometimes trampled by large animals like buffaloes. Furthermore, when another group of male lions takes over a pride, they kill all the cubs so they can sire their own with the lionesses.
Female cubs stay with the group as they age. At around two years old, they become capable hunters. But young males are forced out of the pride at that age. They form bachelor groups and follow migrating herds until they are strong enough to challenge male lions of other prides. In general, a group of males stays in power in the pride for around three years before another bachelor group takes it over. – Wikipedia

The mourning dove (Zenaida macroura) is a member of the dove family, Columbidae. The bird is also known as the American mourning dove or the rain dove, and erroneously as the turtle dove, and was once known as the Carolina pigeon or Carolina turtledove. It is one of the most abundant and widespread of all North American birds. In warm areas, one pair may raise up to six broods of two young each in a single year. The wings make an unusual whistling sound upon take-off and landing, a form of sonation. The bird is a strong flier, capable of speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph). It is the national bird of the British Virgin Islands.
Mourning doves are light grey and brown and generally muted in color. Males and females are similar in appearance. The species is generally monogamous, with two squabs (young) per brood. Both parents incubate and care for the young. Mourning doves eat almost exclusively seeds, but the young are fed crop milk by their parents.
The mourning dove occupies a wide variety of open and semi-open habitats, such as urban areas, farms, prairie, grassland, and lightly wooded areas. It avoids swamps and thick forest. The species has adapted well to areas altered by humans. They commonly nest in trees in cities or near farmsteads. – Wikipedia

The kori bustard (Ardeotis kori) is arguably the largest flying bird native to Africa. It is a member of the bustard family, which all belong to the order Otidiformes and are restricted in distribution to the Old World. It is one of the four species (ranging from Africa to India to Australia) in the large-bodied genus Ardeotis. In fact, the male kori bustard may be the heaviest living animal capable of flight.
This species, like most bustards, is a ground-dwelling bird and an opportunistic omnivore. Male kori bustards, which can be more than twice as heavy as the female, attempt to breed with as many females as possible and then take no part in the raising of the young. The nest is a shallow hollow in the earth, often disguised by nearby obstructive objects such as trees.

1937 Railton with Hudson Deluxe 8 engine/chassis and Limo body by the English Coachbuilder Rippon Bros made for the Works Manager Colonel Rippon as a personal estate car. Rippon Bros, Coachmakers began in 1555, and served the original Queen Mary (yes that one) and Queen Elizabeth 1 as official coachbuilders. They made their first auto body in 1905 for an early Rolls Royce.
This Railton boasts many luxurious features such as aluminum coachwork, dual sliding roof panels, and fitted 3-piece luggage just to name a few. One particularly luxurious amenity is the an inlaid walnut cabinet in the passenger compartment which transforms into a table and contains a matchbox, cigarette and cigar boxes, a silver plated cognac flask, a corkscrew, and a chocolate box. In addition to its refined finishings and due to its intend use as an estate car, this Railton boasts many unusual features, such as a waterproof compartment concealed under the luggage for carrying sport rifles and a reinforced trunk lid that doubles as a shooting platform capable of supporting two men.
The Hudson powered Railton was named for British automotive engineer Reid A. Railton, who designed both a land speed record setting automobile and a water speed record setting boat. The Railton was built in England from 1933 until the beginning of World War II with less than 1,500 being produced. The company was started by the innovative car and boat builder, Noel Macklin who was looking for a new car-making venture after he sold his Invicta car company in 1933. He hoped that combining American engine power and reliability, with a Rolls Royce like luxurious body would sell........and a few Brits found the car a practical marriage of both. Rare and desirable

🇬🇧 The green basil lives in tropical forests, in trees, near water. In case of danger, it drops into the water and swims away. It swims very well, but more surprisingly, this animal is able to run on its two hind legs. It also seems to help itself by hitting the water with its tail, which creates a small wave that helps carry it across the water. It runs so fast, at 12 km/h, that it can even run on the surface of the water! It is this characteristic that has earned it its other nickname, the "Jesus Christ lizard".
The green basil is omnivorous, it feeds on small mammals, insects but also fruits.
Reproduction takes place from the age of 10 months. The male, like many iguanas, approaches the female by nodding his head before mating. A few weeks later, the female lays between 5 and 11 eggs, which are about 1 cm in size. The newborns weigh about two grams while the adults can reach 200 g.
🇮🇹 Il basilico verde vive nelle foreste tropicali, sugli alberi, vicino all'acqua.
I know I have said it before but it just amazes me what nature is capable of. Walking miles in this canyon, seeing what nature has done was just mesmerizing. This is one fall expample of what I saw and captured!! Kris...
I sneak to see what you see in the distance..
What is captivating you so...?
What is going through your mind..?
Are you laden with thoughts..?
or are u immersed in the beauty that is in front of you..?
You are a man of vision, capable of amazing things..while

One of the most intriguing cars at the 2018 New York International Auto Show was the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Sebring Orange Convertible. This amazing $121,000 Vette represents a high water mark in Chevy’s iconic sports car history, technologically advanced and full of luxurious creature comforts by far the most overwhelmingly capable in both aspects. Under the hood 2019 Corvette ZR1 supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 that puts out 755 horsepower and 715 ft/lbs of torque to its rear tires that can carry the super car from 0-60 in 3 seconds with a top speed 212 mph.
The New York International Auto Show is the oldest auto show in the United Stated held every April at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in Hell’s Kitchen since it opened.

After yesterday we saw what impressive "structures" nature is capable of, and only with the help of water and air, today we'll take a look at what great things she can create on a small scale.
On the one hand, we see this in the snowflakes, which, when viewed at high magnification, are absolute masterpieces. On the other hand, we also find them in winter ice paintings, one of which I found on one of my windows yesterday morning. The section you see here is approx. 5-6 cm high.
And even though I had to take photos through three panes of glass, and the sharpness is of course severely affected, the fascinating thing about these structures can still be clearly seen.
I wonder what force ensures that it was precisely these elements that came into being here. This always seems like pure magic to me.

Isotta Fraschini quickly established a reputation for innovation and high-quality craftsmanship. Its legacy is often attributed to its eight-cylinder luxury cars built during the 1920s, but it was many years earlier that the company forged its reputation for motor racing. Leading the charge in the engineering department was Giustino Cattaneo who developed the Tipo I Corsa in 1907, which competed at the Coppa Florio that year and emerged victoriously. A year later, in modified form, it won the Targa Florio. Following these victories, Isotta Fraschini designed a high-performance, lightweight, road-going car called the Tipo FE Voiturette. Several high-horsepower models followed and were particularly popular with U.S.-based enthusiasts.
The United States market was important to Isotta Fraschini and they made considerable efforts to promote their cars, most often through racing endeavors. In 1908, placed second in the Vanderbilt Cup, and were victorious in several other events including the Briarcliff Trophy, Savannah Trophy, and the Lowell Cup. In preparation for the Indianapolis 500, Isotta Fraschini Motor Co. of New York commissioned the Tipo IM. Six examples were built in the spring of 1913, wearing designs inspired by the KM and TM models.
The Isotta Fraschini Tipo IM was powered by an aircraft-inspired overhead cam, a 16-valve engine with a revised bore and stroke ratio, and a displacement size of 7,238 cubic centimeters. Its 7.2-liter displacement allowed it to comply with the limit set for American racing events. The 135 horsepower produced at 2,350 RPM was sent to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox. Another advanced feature was the four-wheel braking system. The suspension was comprised of a solid front and a live rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs all around.
As production was winding down, production was delayed due to a strike at the factory. Despite the setbacks, the factory was able to fulfill its American contracts. The cars were sent to Le Havre, France, and loaded onto the Lusitania on April 29th. They arrived in New York on May 24th and were sent to Indianapolis by express train, just in time to participate in qualifying sessions.
The 1913 Indianapolis 500 was the third year of the event, and it was the substantial monetary rewards that attracted U.S. and European factory-backed teams. The Isotta Fraschini team had the most modern and sophisticated machinery that they were capable of producing, and the lineup of drivers was equally impressive, consisting of Targa Florio winner Vincenzo Trucco, American racer 'Terrible' Teddy Tetzlaff, and two-time Vanderbilt Cup winner Harry Grant. Ray Gilhooley was hired as the relief driver, and he was lent a Tipo KM, which he drove prior to the start of the race in exhibition laps.
In the end, it was the lack of preparation and fine-tuning that proved to be the Achilles Heel of the Tipo IM's effort, having been prepared during the midst of the labor strike. The demise of all three cars was attributed to minor mechanical issues, with Grant leaving on Lap 14 due to a split gas tank. Trucco had the same issue but his car held up to Lap 39 before he bowed out of the race. Tetzlaff's carried the torch for Isotta Fraschini through lap 118 when a broken drive chain ended his day.
The car driven by Tetzlaff returned to Indianapolis 500 a year later and was entrusted to Ray Gilhooley. On Lap 41, the Isotta suffered a tire blowout in Turn 3, which ensnared the drive chain. The car spun wildly and ejected the driver and riding mechanic in the process, eventually coming to a stop on tires in the infield.
In many ways, these were the end and pinnacle of an era, and at the same time gave a glimpse into the future. The chain drive system was archaic and the front wheel brakes were thoroughly modern. Had they not succumbed to mechanical issues, it would have been interesting how history would have recorded their accomplishments at Indy.

BTW, this car sold for 2.6 million dollars in 2019! You might say that was the ultimate win! :)
One of my attempts at the "Macro Mondays" theme "Transportation"
This shows 4-5 mm of a tiny toy car. Because the lights of these cars don‘t look great at that kind of magnification I decided to improvise… so what you see is a tiny drop, which is more than capable of creating a smooth surface, no matter the magnification!
Shot with a Fuji "Fujinon-EFC 35 mm F 5.6" (enlarging) lens on a Canon EOS R5.
This is from a wet plate collodion negative made using a Brownie 3B! That simple meniscus lens is surprisingly capable, especially when using the small aperture.
This was a 6 minute exposure, using the smallest aperture in the shutter. The negative was not quite ideal, so I used the Iodine redevelopment process to add density.
...and self-inflicted environmental catastrophes,
are capable of destroying humanity and entire civilizations.
If I look at the Middle East or Ukraine, it can also be called an attempt at genocide.

After all you put me through
You think I'd despise you
But in the end, I want to thank you
'Cause you've made me that much stronger
Well, I thought I knew you, thinkin' that you were true
Guess I, I couldn't trust, called your bluff, time is up
'Cause I've had enough
You were there by my side, always down for the ride
But your joy ride just came down in flames
'Cause your greed sold me out in shame, mhm
After all of the stealing and cheating
You probably think that I hold resentment for you
But uh uh, oh no, you're wrong
'Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do, I wouldn't know
Just how capable I am to pull through
So I want to say thank you, 'cause it
Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, yeah, yeah, aha
Never saw it coming, all of your backstabbing
Just so you could cash in on a good thing
Before I'd realize your game, aha
I heard you're goin' 'round playin' the victim now
But don't even begin feeling I'm the one to blame
'Cause you dug your own grave
After all of the fights and the lies
'Cause you're wanting to haunt me
But that won't work anymore, no more aha, it's over
'Cause if it wasn't for all of your torture
I wouldn't know how to be this way now and never back down
So I want to say thank you, 'cause it
Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder
It makes me that much wiser
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster
Made my skin a little bit thicker
Makes me that much smarter
So thanks for making me a fighter
How could this man I thought I knew
Turn out to be unjust, so cruel?
Could only see the good in you
Pretended not to know the truth
You tried to hide your lies, disguise yourself
Through living in denial
But in the end you'll see, you won't stop me
I am a fighter and I (I'm a fighter)
I ain't gonna stop (I ain't gonna stop)
There is no turning back, I've had enough
Makes me that much stronger
Makes me work a little bit harder (Yeah)
It makes me that much wiser (Oh yeah)
So thanks for making me a fighter
Made me learn a little bit faster (Yeah)
Made my skin a little bit thicker (Yeah, yeah, yeah)
Makes me that much smarter (Yeah)
So thanks for making me a fighter (Figther)
You thought I would forget but I, I remembered (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
'Cause I remembered (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
I remembered
You thought I would forget (Ooh-ooh)
I remembered (Ooh-ooh)
'Cause I remembered (Ooh)
I remembered

When the reality of Trump became too much for me in 2017, I adopted Jarvis Cocker and now he's old and wise and keeping me company once again. I went to bed or tried to sleep right after hearing Trump was planning ICE raids in Chicago. I wish evil did not exist but it does. Jarvis keeps me company in bed all night long. I reassure myself with his purring. Oh, to be a cat and not know about all the damage humans can inflict on each other...what we are truly capable of. It's just too much most days.

Weather
We are coming to the time of year when we have storms in Florida, some can be serious, I hope that we do not experience one!
Life
Storms don't only come in the form of weather they also come in the ups and downs of living.
I have seen many storms in my life. Most storms have caught me by surprise, so I had to learn very quickly to look further and understand that I am not capable of controlling the weather, to exercise the art of patience and to respect the fury of nature. -
Paulo Coelho
“There's always another storm. It's the way the world works. Snowstorms, rainstorms, windstorms, sandstorms, and firestorms. Some are fierce and others are small. You have to deal with each one separately, but you need to keep an eye on whats brewing for tomorrow.” -
Maria V. Snyder, Fire Study
When a storm is coming
all other birds seek shelter.
The eagle alone avoids
the storm by flying above it.
So, in the storms of life…
May your heart soar like an Eagle. - Anonymous
When passing through
the storms of life,
please remember:
1. It could be worse.
2. It will get better
Stay strong, focus on what you can do, not what you cannot,
and know that the clouds will soon part, and the sun will return again. - Doe Zantamata
Don’t confuse your path with
your destination. Just because
it’s stormy now doesn’t mean that you aren’t headed for sunshine. - Anonymous
If you want to see the sunshine,
you have to weather the storm. -

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo❤️
Constructed last fall, and photographed after the deadly winter storm that knocked out the power grid for millions of Texans. Texan public utilities are as greedy as spiders, but less capable of building resilient structures. Maybe in time, they will evolve.
