I've been visiting Hamilton for day trips since 1996, when I went to paint at Concrete Canvass on the rooftop of Jackson Square mall. Hamilton had a rough patch in the 90s and even the mid-2000s, when I got seriously into exploring spots like Lister Block. Hamilton was sketchy. On my first visit, I witnessed a knife fight walking down James Street North near the now abandoned projects - when I took the bus home, crackheads were fighting each other in the middle of the road. Later, when shooting neon signs at night several of us witnessed a man chase his wife out of the house, also with a knife. Hamilton always had an edge to it, however it started to soften in the early 2010s when Lister Block started getting redeveloped with the old Connaught hotel and James Street North had a rebirth with tons of new business opening. To my suprise, walking around just after 5pm, I noticed many people leaving the area andI caught the same vibe I usually get in US cities. The workers downtown leave and all you have is homeless drug addicts about causing problems with each other. City hall has an encampment. In the span of 2 years Hamilton reverted 15 years of progress in the one area it had something going in it's favour. You can't let drug addicts and developers boarding up entire blocks do what they want - they literally ruin it for everyone else. Good Job Andrea!

Vice-Speaker of Kyrgyzstan's Parliament Daniyar Tolonov is circled by a group of local women during a canvassing event on April 14 in one of the rural villages in Southern Kyrgyzstan. These women, who usually sit at home and miss any public events, were pleased to see a Member of Parliament at the doorstep of their houses and used this opportunity to speak up about the most troubling issues in their neighborhood.
