When you are first diagnosed with cancer it is completely normal to feel scared, shock, disbelief, anxiety, guilt, sadness, or anger. Every person copes with cancer in their own way. It is not unusual for cancer patients to wonder "Why has this happened to me?" It is not uncommon for patients to doubt the accuracy of the diagnosis, especially if they donāt feel sick.
Many patients say it is hard to think about anything but their cancer. A cancer diagnosis affects not only the cancer patient, but also their friends and family. It is not uncommon for people to mentally shut down when they first hear they have cancer.
Personal beliefs are a major factor in determining what a cancer diagnoses means to a patient. Many times cancer means facing your own mortality. Accepting a cancer diagnosis and figuring out how cancer will play a role in your life and death can be challenging.
Deciding on a Treatment
Many cancer patients feel very anxious about choosing a treatment. Some have seen friends or family members go through rigorous cancer treatment, and are afraid of experiencing the same pain or suffering. Remember that the treatments for cancer are constantly improving, and every patient responds to treatment differently. If you or someone you love is really terrified of the treatment do some research, or ask your doctor. Often knowledge about the treatment and the cancer really helps to alleviate some fear.
Is Cancer My Fault?
Amanda Before Her Surgery
Some cancer patients feel guilty about not noticing the cancer earlier, or wondering if something they did caused the cancer. They may question their work or home environment. They may worry that their children will inherit the cancer genes.
Telling Everyone About Your Cancer
Many people with cancer wonder who they should tell about their diagnosis and when. It is normal to feel pressure to share your diagnosis, but feel free to wait until you are comfortable. There is no set time when you have to tell others you have cancer.
Cancer Support Groups
Mary Anna, Cancer Survivor
Some people are reluctant to seek counseling, but studies have shown that patients in support groups have lower stress and higher survival rates. Counseling provides emotional support and helps cancer patients better understand their illness. Many organizations and hospitals offer support groups for cancer patients, survivors, and their families. Support groups take many forms, from highly structured monthly group meetings to financial assistance. For more information on support groups in your area see our Cancer Events Calendar or talk with your healthcare provider.
If you do not want to attend a support group, find a family member or friend who will listen to you. Try to avoid people who openly feel sorry for you. Remember you need someone to help you through the hard times, not someone who will remind you how bad they are.
If you are a religious person consider talking with your religious leader. Many religious people find hope and peace in knowing how their cancer fits into the bigger picture. Prayer and meditation have been scientifically proven to help in the healing process.

The inability of current breast screening methods to detect cellular changes at an early stage of development, as the Pap test does for cervical cancer, is one reason for the lack of significant reduction in the death rate of breast cancer. The HALO Breast Pap Test is a new test that can help to detect breast cancer in it's early stages. Find out more at www.neomatrix.com.

Look at how good she looks! I'm so happy. We spent the day together and it was just so good to see her feeling better. She'll get six more treatments (or six more months?) of chemo and then we'll have another report.

Baby boy's eye cancer spotted after he is snapped with mother's camera phone
By Daily Mail Reporter
07th May 2009
This is the family picture that may have saved the sight of an eight-month-old boy.
Thomas Hale has a rare form of cancer, which was diagnosed after his mother took a picture of him on her new camera phone.
The glare from the camera revealed light sensitive cells in the youngster's eye which could not be seen in face-to-face contact.
His mother Elizabeth, 32, said: 'To look at him before you would never have seen anything was wrong. His vision was fine and he was just like any other happy, smiling eight-month-old.
Thomas Hale who has rare eye cancer
This is the family photo of Thomas Hale that could have saved his eyesight. His mother Elizabeth snapped him on her mobile phone
'On March 4, I got a new camera phone and was playing around and taking photographs of the children.
'The first picture of Thomas looked unusual so I took a few more and his eyes on them all looked different.'
After speaking to her sister who is a nurse, Elizabeth and her husband Neil took him to their GP who referred Thomas to Consultant Ophthalmologist Antonio Aguirre at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.
Mr Aguirre confirmed Thomas had the rare form of eye cancer retinoblastoma, which affects 50 children under the age of five each year.
Thomas has four tumours, one in his left eye which reflects back on the camera while the other three are in his right eye.
Day forty-nine/365. That staff would donate money, and share the solidarity of wearing blue jeans on a Friday, so that a drop could be placed in the bucket of resources needed to fight breast cancer, is commendable. For someone to imagine, design, and assemble this poster about the effort, makes it even more special.
I hope the effort has enjoyed some success in raising funds, increasing awareness, and encouraging the women -- and men -- who go through the dreaded experience.
Thankfully, breast cancer has not touched my family. But, I've shared the journey, in some small way, with many people whose lives it has changed. Many thanks to those who have expressed love in the way that these staff members did today.
