Earlier this month (July 2013) I had my big blood test and the results have shown that my cancer levels have lowered again. My igG (cancer levels) are now 8.2, they were 11.8 in May, 19.0 in March, and 62.2 pre-chemo back in Feb 2013.
This Velcade chemo treatment has been incredibly difficult on so many levels, the future looks so cloudy. Multiple Myeloma (blood cancer) does change your life. Amazing that I'm on my 4th treatment.

Skin cancer was diagnosed on May 1st 2009. Treatment with imiquimod, to boost the immune system, started on August 3rd.
A second course of treatment started on September 24th following a hospital checkup. The treatment appears to be working and it is possible that the kick-started immune system will now complete the job without further help but further applications of imiquimod for another 6 weeks has been prescribed as a safety measure.

My wife, Jill, was diagnosed with AML, a type of Leukemia, on July 2, 2007. The doctors immediatly began her treatment. She was given two 7 day rounds of chemotherapy, and spent the rest of her 51 days in the hospital preparing for chemotherapy or recovering from it. She was released from the hospital on August 22, 2007. So far her treatment has gone okay and is continuing.
This photo is from her time in the hospital.

Cancer risk factors include exposure to chemicals or other substances, as well as certain behaviors. They also include things people cannot control, like age and family history. A family history of certain cancers can be a sign of a possible inherited cancer syndrome

Smoking more than one pack of cigarettes per day have a greater chance of developing lung cancer. Smoking is linked to about 80% to 90% of lung cancer deaths. Using other tobacco products such as cigars or pipes also increases the risk of lung cancer. Tobacco smoke is a toxic mix of more than 7,000 chemicals. Cigarette smoking can cause cancer almost anywhere in the body. Lung diseases caused by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Cigarette smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. If you have asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack or make an attack worse. Smokers are 12 to 13 times more likely to die from COPD than non-smokers.
Dungeness crab (Cancer magister) is one of the treasures of the West Coast fish market and the symbol of the Golden Gate fishing industry. Native to coastal waters from southern California to the Aleutians, Dungeness crab is the main commercial crab species south of Alaska, with important landings in nearly every fishing port north of Santa Barbara. It's a fairly large species, weighing about a pound and a quarter apiece in the minimum legal size (6-1/4 inches across the carapace, or upper shell) and running up to about 3 pounds. Most of the catch is consumed close to home, but some gets shipped to other parts of the country both fresh and frozen.
On much of the West Coast, Dungeness crab is a winter fishery. Around San Francisco, the season usually begins in November, and cracked crab is as much a tradition at some Bay Area Thanksgiving tables as turkey. Most of the catch from the Golden Gate south occurs in the first few weeks of the season, and the rest of the year more of the crabs sold at Fisherman's Wharf arrive by truck rather than by boat. Farther north on the California coast, the season opens in December and typically peaks in January. Oregon and Washington crabbers generally fish longer into the spring than their California counterparts, while in British Columbia the peak season doesn't even start until April, and it's mainly a summer fishery in southeast Alaska.

Jamies dad and Aidan on Christmas 2009.
He's been sick for over two months and we couldn't get a diagnosis. They kept saying a blockage or infection of the kidney. Well after losing lots of weight..being in constant pain, having a stent put in, multiple MRI's, CAT scans etc..
We found out today that he has Kidney Cancer and that it is in the lymph nodes. He will see the Oncologist tomorrow to see what stage it is and go from there.
Please, please keep him and our family in your prayers, send good thoughts, swing chickens or whatever...
Cancer is a horrible disease..but we know that with good treatment, support, love and a lot of hope and faith that we will win.
If I am not around as much..this is why. I know I haven't commented on my 365 friends' pages as i'd like to but we just have been running all over with his dad being sick..
I don't even know if I will get to continue on in my 365 since I would probably miss a day here and there..if I dont get to stay in the group, I will still follow your streams and be jealous of all of your wonderful creativity!.
When you are first diagnosed with cancer it is completely normal to feel scared, shock, disbelief, anxiety, guilt, sadness, or anger. Every person copes with cancer in their own way. It is not unusual for cancer patients to wonder "Why has this happened to me?" It is not uncommon for patients to doubt the accuracy of the diagnosis, especially if they don’t feel sick.
Many patients say it is hard to think about anything but their cancer. A cancer diagnosis affects not only the cancer patient, but also their friends and family. It is not uncommon for people to mentally shut down when they first hear they have cancer.
Personal beliefs are a major factor in determining what a cancer diagnoses means to a patient. Many times cancer means facing your own mortality. Accepting a cancer diagnosis and figuring out how cancer will play a role in your life and death can be challenging.
Deciding on a Treatment
Many cancer patients feel very anxious about choosing a treatment. Some have seen friends or family members go through rigorous cancer treatment, and are afraid of experiencing the same pain or suffering. Remember that the treatments for cancer are constantly improving, and every patient responds to treatment differently. If you or someone you love is really terrified of the treatment do some research, or ask your doctor. Often knowledge about the treatment and the cancer really helps to alleviate some fear.
Is Cancer My Fault?
Amanda Before Her Surgery
Some cancer patients feel guilty about not noticing the cancer earlier, or wondering if something they did caused the cancer. They may question their work or home environment. They may worry that their children will inherit the cancer genes.
Telling Everyone About Your Cancer
Many people with cancer wonder who they should tell about their diagnosis and when. It is normal to feel pressure to share your diagnosis, but feel free to wait until you are comfortable. There is no set time when you have to tell others you have cancer.
Cancer Support Groups
Mary Anna, Cancer Survivor
Some people are reluctant to seek counseling, but studies have shown that patients in support groups have lower stress and higher survival rates. Counseling provides emotional support and helps cancer patients better understand their illness. Many organizations and hospitals offer support groups for cancer patients, survivors, and their families. Support groups take many forms, from highly structured monthly group meetings to financial assistance. For more information on support groups in your area see our Cancer Events Calendar or talk with your healthcare provider.
If you do not want to attend a support group, find a family member or friend who will listen to you. Try to avoid people who openly feel sorry for you. Remember you need someone to help you through the hard times, not someone who will remind you how bad they are.
If you are a religious person consider talking with your religious leader. Many religious people find hope and peace in knowing how their cancer fits into the bigger picture. Prayer and meditation have been scientifically proven to help in the healing process.

As a cancer survivor, I know all too well the importance of a strong support network of family and friends as well as the need for critical medical research to help beat this disease. Almost all of us have been impacted by cancer or know someone who has. I appreciated talking with the American Cancer Society about its important work to end cancer. Progress has been made in medical research, but so much more needs to be done to end this terrible disease.
