About 2500 members of the Canadian Forces (CF) are currently serving as part of Joint Task Force Afghanistan. They play a key role in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission whose goal is to improve the security situation in Afghanistan and assist in rebuilding the country.

Canada is in Afghanistan at the request of the democratically elected government, along with 36 other nations, and as part of a UN-sanctioned mission to help build a stable, democratic, and self-sufficient society.

Since April 10, more than 3,500 troops from 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group (5 CMBG) are in the Gagetown Garrison training areas (N. B.) for Exercise LION INTREPIDE, and will remain there until May 9, 2012. With its diverse terrain, Gagetown Garrison provides the troops from Valcartier with a different training environment and a vast training ground. Exercise LION INTREPIDE 2012 allows the units from 5 CMBG, and affiliated units, to renew with different war concepts that concentrate on more classic military techniques. This reorientation is essential in order to prepare the soldiers to carry out future combat missions, humanitarian aid, peacekeeping and other types of mission.

During the exercice LION INTREPID, many scenarios are created to enhance the performance of our soldiers. One of the scenarios, for the 5th field ambulance, included many wounded to test the doctors and medical staff. The UPS 1 team, under the orders of Dr Eyestone, attach to the 2e Battalion, Royal 22e Régiment, showed their amazing work and a high medical standard. We can see that our soldiers health are in the best hands.

HMCS Haida (G63) is a Tribal-class destroyer that served in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) from 1943-1963.

Haida is arguably the most famous warship to have ever served Canada, having sunk more enemy surface tonnage than any other Canadian warship. She is also the only surviving Tribal-class destroyer out of 27 vessels that were constructed between 1937-1945 for the Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy and the RCN.

The Golden Hawks were a Canadian military aerobatic flying team established in 1959 to celebrate the 35th anniversary or the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and the "Golden" 50th anniversary of Canadian flight, which began with the AEA Silver Dart in 1909.

Initially a six-plane team was envisioned as performing for only one year with the Canadair Sabre, but the Golden Hawks were so popular after their single 63-show season that the team was expanded. Another Sabre was added to the team, allowing for a five-aircraft main formation with two solo jets. They continued performing for three more seasons until they were disbanded for financial reasons, on February 7, 1964, having flown a total of 317 shows across North America. Government officials said the $750,000 it took to operate the team each year could be used better for other purposes.

Not only did the team perform the loops, rolls and other maneuvers standard to military formation flying, they had their own trademark maneuvers. One of the Golden Hawks' signature stunts was a low-level flyby of the crowd with their canopies open, waving at the spectators. The Golden Hawks pioneered the bomb burst maneuver and the use of two solo pilots working together as part of the aerial demonstration which virtually every military team since has adopted in various ways.

No. 540 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets based in Oakville, Ontario is named after the Golden Hawks.

During the 1980s, No. 851 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets based in Prince Edward County, Ontario owned a Sabre that at one time was used by the Golden Hawks. From 1961 to 1977 the same Sabre was on display at Pinecrest school in Bloomfield, Ontario. The Sabre currently resides in Barrie, Ontario.

In 2009, Hawk One[1], a fully refurbished Canadair F-86 Sabre in Golden Hawk colors, owned by Vintage Wings of Canada will be helping to celebrate the Centennial of Flight in Canada. Hawk One will be performing in air shows across Canada throughout 2009 both with and without the Snowbirds.

Very happy to see this move being flown again after a two year hiatus.
