A Leopard 2A6M Main Battle Tank, from The Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) and part of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group, provides over-watch during recent operations in the volatile Panjwa’i and Zhari Districts of Kandahar Province. The sheer size and firepower of the Leopard 2A6M Main Battle Tank makes it a formidable force and a huge deterrent to enemy insurgents.
In close cooperation with Afghan National Security Forces, 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group provides security by conducting counter-insurgency operations throughout Panjwa’i District located south-west of Kandahar City. The Battle Group conducts partnered operations with the 2nd Kandak of the 1st Brigade, 205 Corps of the Afghan National army and the Afghan National Police in order to advance governance, reconstruction and security in the area.
Operation ATHENA is Canada’s participation in the International Security Assistance Forces in Afghanistan. Focused on Kandahar Province in southern Afghanistan since the fall of 2005, Op ATHENA has one over-arching objective: to leave Afghanistan to Afghans, in a country that is better governed, more peaceful and more secure.

9. janvārī Ādažu bāzē notika svinīgā ceremonija, kurā NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes Latvijā kaujas grupas komandiera amatā stājās pulkvežleitnants Filips Sovē (Philippe Sauvé), nomainot līdzšinējo komandieri pulkvežleitnantu Stīvu Makbetu (Steve MacBeth), tādējādi noslēdzot trešās Latvijā izvietotās kaujas grupas karavīru rotāciju.
Daudznacionālo kaujas grupu Latvijā vada Kanāda, un to veido aptuveni 1400 karavīru no Albānijas, Čehijas, Itālijas, Kanādas, Melnkalnes, Polijas, Slovākijas, Slovēnijas un Spānijas, kas rotācijas kārtībā pilda dienesta pienākumus Latvijā, piedaloties mācībās kopā ar Nacionālajiem bruņotajiem spēkiem, tādējādi uzlabojot savietojamību ar reģionālajiem sabiedrotajiem, lai spētu reaģēt uz drošības vides izaicinājumiem.
NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes kaujas grupu izveides un izvietošanas mērķis ir veicināt NATO īstenoto atturēšanu un stiprināt alianses aizsardzību, demonstrējot alianses solidaritāti un apņēmību aizstāvēt aliansi pret jebkāda veida agresijas izpausmēm. Svinīgā NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes Latvijā kaujas grupas sagaidīšanas ceremonija notika 2017. gada 19. jūnijā Ādažu bāzē.

5. oktobrī Ādažos aptuveni 800 karavīru no Latvijas Sauszemes spēku Mehanizētās kājnieku brigādes, ASV spēkiem Eiropā un Kanādas vadītās kaujas grupas Latvijā vienojās kopīgā skrējienā, lai paaugstinātu fiziskās sagatavotības līmeni un veicinātu karavīru saliedētību.
Karavīru vienotības skrējienu organizē ASV spēku Eiropā karavīri, kuri atrodas Latvijā operācijas “Atlantic Resolve” ietvaros.
Jau ziņots, ka ASV spēku Eiropā dalība ASV operācijā “Atlantic Resolve” demonstrē ASV ieguldījumu kolektīvajā drošībā pēc Krievijas veiktās Krimas aneksijas. 173. aviācijas brigādes karavīri bija pirmie, kas ieradās Baltijas valstīs un Polijā operācijas “Atlantic Resolve” ietvaros 2014. gada aprīlī.
Tāpat jau ziņots, ka NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes Latvijā kaujas grupu vada Kanāda, un to veido vairāk nekā 1000 karavīru no Albānijas, Itālijas, Kanādas, Polijas, Slovēnijas un Spānijas.
Pērn NATO samitā Varšavā NATO valstu un valdību vadītāji apstiprināja vienošanos par daudznacionālo bataljona līmeņa kaujas grupu izvietošanu Igaunijā, Latvijā, Lietuvā un Polijā. Kaujas grupu izveides un izvietošanas mērķis ir veicināt NATO īstenoto atturēšanu un stiprināt alianses aizsardzību.

When West Germany's Bundeswehr was allowed to organize panzer divisions postwar, the units were equipped with second-hand American M48 Pattons. While the M48 was a good, reliable tank, by the late 1950s, it was increasingly outclassed by newer Soviet designs, and in any case the Germans--with their long history of tank design--felt they could design a better tank more suited to European battlefields. In 1957, the Heer issued a requirement for a 30-ton medium tank with high mobility, with a 105mm main gun. Initially called the Standard Panzer, it was renamed Europa Panzer when France and Italy expressed interest in the project, and eventually given the name Leopard--carrying on the tradition begun in World War II of naming German tanks after big cats.
Porsche's design was declared the winner in 1963, while Krauss-Maffei would build the Leopard I. During the prototype testing process, various upgrades were added, including an American gun-stabilization system, a bigger engine, an improved targeting system, and upgraded armor. Armor had not been a priority in the original design, as it was believed that modern tanks could not survive direct fire hits in any case; experience in the Arab-Israeli Wars changed that theory, as speed was found to be less effective than increased armor. This added ten tons to the design, but the Leopard I remained a comparatively fast tank.
Deliveries of the Leopard 1 to the West German Bundesheer began in 1965. France had pulled out of the project to design its own tank, the AMX-30, but the Leopard's qualities interested many other NATO nations, and it became the standard tank for the majority of NATO; Australia bought the Leopard as well. (The United States opted for their own M60 Patton series, while the United Kingdom used the Chieftain.) In most cases, the Leopard replaced the British-made Centurion.
The Leopard I's sound design made it relatively easy to upgrade, and no less than five major upgrades were made to the Leopard (Leopard 1A1 through A5), mainly improving the armor and targeting systems. Its vulnerability to wire-guided missiles and even newer Soviet designs such as the T-72 led West Germany to partner with the United States in the MBT-70 project; when that failed, the Bundeswehr began work on the Leopard 2, which was a completely new tank built around the 120mm main gun. Though most Leopards in NATO service are gradually being replaced by newer designs (usually the American M1 Abrams, Italian Ariete, or Leopard 2s), it remains in service with a number of nations.
Canada bought Leopard 1A3s as the Leopard C1, beginning in 1978 to replace its obsolete Centurions. These were generally identical to the German Leopard 1A3, but with a laser rangefinder system. Almost all the Canadian Leopards were deployed with the 4th Canadian Mechanized Brigade in central West Germany, partnered with German and American units in the Central Army Group (CENTAG). Canadian Leopard crews acquired a reputation for superb gunnery. With the end of the Cold War, the Canadian government saw little need to replace their Leopard C1s, but in 2000, the fleet was upgraded to Leopard C2 status by switching out the turrets of the C1 with former German Leopard 1A5 turrets, which had better ammunition stowage and greatly improved ranging systems, as well as improved turret armor.
in 2007, Canada announced that the Leopard C2 would be finally replaced by second-hand Leopard 2s--the main reasons being improved armor, a more standard 120mm main gun, and air conditioning, as Canadian Leopard crews in Afghanistan were suffering heatstroke: the Leopard 1 was never intended for desert warfare.
When I lived in Germany in the late 1970s, Leopard 1s were a common sight with German Heer units based all around us, so it was a treat to see a Leopard 1 again at Calgary's Military Museums. This is a Leopard C2 of the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians) Regiment, which saw action in Afghanistan--the first time in nearly 50 years that Canadian tankers fired their guns in anger. It still wears its European-style two-tone green camouflage, with a subdued Canadian Maple Leaf painted on the turret side (seen just below the rangefinder). The Leopard is only temporarily parked here; it is likely to be moved next to the other tanks in the Military Museums' collections in the near future.

The Department of National Defence receives the first modernized LAV III from General Dynamics Land Systems Canada in London, Ontario on January 24, 2013.
The upgrades and enhancements to the vehicle’s mobility and its weapons system will contribute to successful military operations at home and abroad. It will protect soldiers against Improvised Explosive Devices, land mines, grenades, and other threats. This is part of an upgrade project for 550 LAV III's, valued at more than $1 billion.
The LAV III Upgrade Project is one of four Family of Land Combat Vehicles projects announced in July 2009 that aims to capitalize on both existing and evolving technology and improving the protection, mobility and lethality of the Light Armoured Vehicle III fleet.

Le premier exemplaire de la nouvelle version du VBL III est livré au ministère de la Défense nationale par General Dynamics Land Systems Canada le 24 janvier 2013 à London, en Ontario.
Les améliorations et mises à jour au niveau de la mobilité du véhicule et de ses systèmes d’armes contribueront au succès des opérations militaires au pays et à l’étranger. Les militaires y seront protégés des engins explosifs improvisés, des mines terrestres, des grenades et autres menaces connexes. Ces améliorations font partie d’un projet de modernisation de 550 VBL III, évalué à plus d’un milliard de dollars.
Le projet de modernisation du VBL III est l’un des quatre projets relatifs à la famille de véhicules de combat terrestre, annoncés en juin 2009, visant à tirer profit à la fois des technologies existantes et des nouvelles technologies et à améliorer la protection, la mobilité et la létalité de la flotte de véhicules blindés légers III.

Aizkavēšanas un aizsardzības operācijā, kas mācību “Namejs” laikā 27.augustā norisinājās Vecumnieku novadā, bija iesaistīta Sauszemes spēku Mehanizētā kājnieku brigāde, Zemessardzes 1.Rīgas brigāde un Kanādas vadītā daudznacionālā kaujas grupa. Nosacītais pretinieks – Čehijas un Polijas bruņoto spēku karavīri ar kaujas tehniku un atbalsta ieročiem.
Vecumniekos karavīri un zemessargi bija izvērsušies divos objektos un to aizstāvība bija vienību galvenais uzdevums. Uzbrukumu sākotnēji aizkavēja Mehanizētās kājnieku brigādes 1.mehanizētais kājnieku bataljons. Pēc tam objektu aizsardzību veic Studentu bataljona kaujas grupa kopā ar Kanādas vadīto daudznacionālo kaujas grupu.
Mācības apmeklēja, ar brigāžu komandieriem un plānotājiem tikās arī aizsardzības ministrs Raimonds Bergmanis un Nacionālo bruņoto spēku komandieris ģenerālleitnants Leonīds Kalniņš.

On August 27, 2018 Latvian Land Forces Mechanized Infantry brigade, National Guard 1st Riga brigade and Canadien led eFP battlegroup Latvia personnel conducted delay and defence operations in Vecumnieki region, Latvia during military exercise “Namejs 2018”. The opposing force was soldiers from Polish Armed Forces and Czech Armed Forces.

Nacionālo bruņoto spēku komandieris ģenerālmajors L.Kalniņš divpusējās tikšanās laikā ar Itālijas bruņoto spēku komandieri ģenerāli K.Graciano un Kanādas Bruņoto spēku komandieri ģenerāli Dž.Vānsu pārrunāja NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes Latvijā kaujas grupas izvietošanas gaitu, uzsverot stratēģiskās komunikācijas nozīmi NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes ieviešanas procesā, kā arī pārrunāja nākotnes sadarbības iniciatīvas aizsardzības jomā.
19. jūnijā, Ādažu bāzē notiks svinīgā NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes Latvijā kaujas grupas sagaidīšanas ceremonija, kurā piedalīsies arī Latvijas, Itālijas un Kanādas Bruņoto spēku komandieri.
NATO paplašinātās klātbūtnes Latvijā kaujas grupu vadīs Kanāda, un to veidos vairāk nekā 1000 karavīru no Albānijas, Itālijas, Kanādas, Polijas, Slovēnijas un Spānijas.

Dienu iepriekš ģenerālleitnants apmeklēja arī 4.maija - Brīvības svētku - militāro parādi Jēkabpilī.

Exercise Pegasus Spear was a training event focusing on the parachuting skills of members of the Third Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (3PPCLI). It enabled over 120 parachute-qualified soldiers, military freefall soldiers and jump masters to hone their skills in airborne operations from a CC-177. This exercise was also significant as it was the first time members from 3PPCLI were dispatched from the RCAF largest aircraft.
429 (Transport) Squadron is the purveyor of strategic airlift for Canada. Since August 2007, the squadron has been flying the CC-177 Globemaster III. 8 Wing Trenton has been home base to the Bisons since 1990 and has performed a wide range of air transport roles on behalf of Canada - everything from delivering humanitarian aid to disaster zones around the world to ferrying supplies and Canadian troops in Afghanistan. ..

Exercise TRILLIUM RESPONSE 14 involves more than 300 members of 4th Canadian Division, primarily the Arctic Response Company Group and Domestic Response Company. They are honing their skills in winter warfare, cold weather survival and the use of Arctic equipment, including Light Over Snow Vehicles (snowmobiles).
Ex TRILLIUM RESPONSE 14 focuses on proving the Division soldiers’ ability to fight, move and communicate in the harsh conditions of the Northern winter.

L’exercice TRILLIUM RESPONSE 14 met à contribution plus de 300 membres de la 4e Division du Canada, principalement du Groupe-compagnie d’intervention dans l’Arctique et de la Compagnie d’intervention nationale. Les participants perfectionneront leurs compétences dans les domaines de la guerre hivernale, la survie par temps froid et l’utilisation de l’équipement pour l’Arctique, y compris les véhicules légers pouvant se déplacer sur la neige (motoneiges).
L’Ex TRILLIUM RESPONSE 14 vise à rendre les soldats de la Division aptes à combattre, à se déplacer et à communiquer dans les conditions difficiles de l’hiver boréal.

Corporal Sheldon Mikkelsen, 36 Service Battalion, guards a convoy while on a long halt during Exercise SOUTHBOUND TROOPER XIII (Ex SBT XIII) in Fort Pickett, Virginia on February 20, 2013.
Ex SBT XIII is a joint level exercise involving 36 Canadian Brigade Group (36 CBG) in partnership with American units. More than 600 Canadian and US military personnel will participate in EX SBT XIII held in Fort Pickett, Virginia, 17-23 February 2013. This exercise provides a unique opportunity for the Canadians to operate and train with their U.S. counterparts in an effort to develop their interoperability skills and build strong ties for missions at home and abroad.

La Compagnie A du GT 35 effectue une avance au contact à Fort Pickett en Virginie, aux États-Unis, lors de l’exercice «NOBLE GUERRIER», le 5 janvier 2013.
Mille-six-cent réservistes du 34e Groupe Brigade du Canada (34 GBC) et du 35e Groupe Brigade du Canada (35 GBC) se sont déployés à Fort Pickett en Virginie aux États-Unis pour l’exercice « NOBLE GUERRIER » du 2 au 9 janvier 2013. Cet exercice à grand déploiement est l’occasion pour les réservistes de pratiquer diverses opérations de combat dans un contexte d’aide humanitaire.

Aizkavēšanas un aizsardzības operācijā, kas mācību “Namejs” laikā 27.augustā norisinājās Vecumnieku novadā, bija iesaistīta Sauszemes spēku Mehanizētā kājnieku brigāde, Zemessardzes 1.Rīgas brigāde un Kanādas vadītā daudznacionālā kaujas grupa. Nosacītais pretinieks – Čehijas un Polijas bruņoto spēku karavīri ar kaujas tehniku un atbalsta ieročiem.
Vecumniekos karavīri un zemessargi bija izvērsušies divos objektos un to aizstāvība bija vienību galvenais uzdevums. Uzbrukumu sākotnēji aizkavēja Mehanizētās kājnieku brigādes 1.mehanizētais kājnieku bataljons. Pēc tam objektu aizsardzību veic Studentu bataljona kaujas grupa kopā ar Kanādas vadīto daudznacionālo kaujas grupu.
Mācības apmeklēja, ar brigāžu komandieriem un plānotājiem tikās arī aizsardzības ministrs Raimonds Bergmanis un Nacionālo bruņoto spēku komandieris ģenerālleitnants Leonīds Kalniņš.

On August 27, 2018 Latvian Land Forces Mechanized Infantry brigade, National Guard 1st Riga brigade and Canadien led eFP battlegroup Latvia personnel conducted delay and defence operations in Vecumnieki region, Latvia during military exercise “Namejs 2018”. The opposing force was soldiers from Polish Armed Forces and Czech Armed Forces.

Le cours sur les opérations d'éclaireurs-patrouilleurs est un cours de l'instruction supérieure d'infanterie au sein des FAC qui se concentre sur le déroulement d'opérations de l'infanterie de différentes sortes, parmi lesquelles on retrouve les opérations suivantes : opérations aériennes, aéromobiles, sur terrain accidenté et opérations amphibies sur tout type de terrain.

17th Annual Canadian International Sniper Concentration
The 17th Annual Canadian International Sniper Concentration is an excellent opportunity for teams from Canada’s land forces as well allied and police snipers to further develop capabilities related to sniper-specific skill sets. This is achieved by focusing on the operational experience and lessons learned by Canada and its allies, to create esprit de corps, to develop healthy competition and to generate discussion about ways to improve sniper skills-sets for all parties involved.
