In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flander's fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow

In Flander's fields.

In Canada, Remembrance Day (November 11, 2024) commemorates the sacrifices of people in all armed conflicts.

I wish I still had gear from when I used to play airsoft/paintball, alas I am without many props so here is a plaid clone army of me!

As you can see, I didn't get all of my clones in a straight line, perhaps that is what the guy at the front is waving his arms about?

The process was simple, but ridiculously hard on my computer once it was time for editing. I took 40+ shots of me in various positions, then stacked them in Photoshop, totalling about 1.78GB document size. This had my mouse cursor lagging behind, so I closed all other open programs and took things slow.

I'll admit that I did cut corners on this one. I ended up getting frustrated with my masking method, colouring black over the right half of the image so that future masks would work. I decided to just merge the completed mask to a new layer and delete the previous two layers (mask layer and the layer below it).

I know, I know, this is very frowned upon and means I won't be able to make further changes later on, but this made things a lot easier on me in the short-term.

For my first attempt at macro photography, I decided to shoot this simple, nondescript piece of limestone given to me approximately thirteen years ago. This rock is a piece of the Grange tunnel system used in World War I by Canadian soldiers, located at Vimy Ridge in northern France. I had the honour and privilege of receiving a personal tour of the Grange Tunnel system which, as a Canadian soldier, is hallowed ground. I can talk forever about this precious piece of porous rock but I think I've said enough.

Plaque reads -

This plaque commemorates the soldiers who died in this area and specifically in this field during World War II. Their numbers are unknown but their memory lives on.

The following is a personal testimony from Corporal LESLIE EDWARDS 1920-2004, a local man who served in the area and laid poppies on this spot every Remembrance Day until his death.

"I will never forget the day in 1940 when a Canadian company came to Cuckmere and pitched their tents in this field. I was stationed here and knew that bombers regularly used this valley for navigation purposes. I tried to tell the commanding officer but he was not interested in what I had to say. Two mornings later the Messerschmitts arrived. Just as the sun was rising they came skimming over the water and up the valley. Around Alfriston they banked hard and came back. Bearing down on the tents they opened fire. Steam, soil and grass rose in front of them as bullets and bombs entered the ground. All the young men in the marquees and bell tents were killed. The commanding officer, who was shaving at the time in the middle coastguard cottage, died instantly when a shell went through the wall that held his mirror."

Remember me when I am gone away,

Gone far away into the silent land.

Fortissimo is a military and musical spectacular created for the lawns of Parliament Hill in Ottawa featuring massed military bands, pipes and drums, guest performers and the soldiers of the Ceremonial Guard.

The Glengarry Highland Games, in Manville Ontario, are the North American Championships, with bands from as far afield as New Mexico and Florida. Over three days, there are a multitude of colourful events and the constant skirl of over 54 pipe bands. Competing for individual and band awards. Add to this the fiddlers, highland dancing competitions and the opening Tattoo and mass pipes and drums of the closing ceremony (over a thousand pipers and drummers - and it's a photographers delight.

Yesterday, soldiers of Canada's sixteen Highland Regiments, of the Canadian Army Reserve (Militia) competed at the Glengarry Highland Games in Maxville Ontario, in the Highlanders Tug o' War Challenge. The cup was won by the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa.

From the 2015 Strathroy-Caradoc International Emergency Response Day.

I was talking with one of my neighbors while doing yard work today and he informed that there were military vehicles and personnel over at the flooded power station at the edge of our community helping with repairs and cleanup.

I grabbed my camera and Beefy and headed out.

There were cops, trucks and soldiers all over the place, hauling sandbags, setting up barricades, etc, it was really cool!

We weren't able to get too close but this friendly group of young military gents were kind enough to let me snap a group shot of them as they took a brief break in the shade!

It is so inspiring to see everyone in Calgary pulling together and pitching in to help resolve this crisis!

i thought what i saw here brought this monument right to life and more realistically depicted the harsh conditions our forefathers endured for the sake of our nations' peace.

Man i love Canada!

we're so blessed to live in such a freaking awesome country!

why do so many try to change it !?

Initially built in 1910 by the Independent Order of Foresters, this building, along with a 12-acre site, included stone gates and barns operated as an orphanage. In 1943 as the war raged in Europe, the site was sold to the Canadian Army and renamed the Ortona Barracks. Here the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps Casualty Retraining Centre found a home and, in 1946, Central Command for the Canadian Army. During the Cold War, the barracks expanded and operated as the HQ for 70 Communication Group. In 1972 the Government purchased the Barracks for use as an instruction for the aid of those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities; the Oaklands Regional Centre operated until 2005. Today it is home to Central West Specialized Developmental Services, providing a vast range of community-based support for the venerable population.

Canada’s Leopard 2 fleet provides the Canadian Army with superior, mobile and aggressive firepower on the battlefield. Leopard 2s are most effective when operating as part of a close-knit combat team working in close coordination.

PTE William Y. Donaldson Jr. 528545 is shown here standing in front of the family home, Hedgely House at 64 Caledonia Street at the corner of Jones and Caledonia Streets in Stratford Ontario Canada in 1916. The vehicle, a 1914 Overland Touring is decorated with Patriotic flags and bares a porcelain 1916 Ontario license plate. Behind the Privates right hand is a hitching post for those who arrived by horse and buggy. This home still stands today and has changed little in appearance over the last 100 years. Private Donaldson was with the 85th Battery out of Wolseley Barracks , London Ontario. He served as a medic with the Canadian Siberian Expeditionary Force.

Probably made 1930s by either Northern Electric or Western Electric, and used until 1960s.

The 17th Annual Canadian International Sniper Concentration is an excellent opportunity for teams from Canada’s land forces as well allied and police snipers to further develop capabilities related to sniper-specific skill sets. This is achieved by focusing on the operational experience and lessons learned by Canada and its allies, to create esprit de corps, to develop healthy competition and to generate discussion about ways to improve sniper skills-sets for all parties involved.
