EXERCISE TERRIER DÉCOUVERT

An infantry member from Les Fusiliers de Sherbrooke Regiment prepare to attack inside Capelton Mine during Exercise “Terrier Découvert”.

More than one thousand reservists from the 35th Canadian Brigade Group (35 CBG) took part in exercise “TERRIER DÉCOUVERT” during the Primary Training Audience (PTA 4) in the MRC of Memphrémagog from November 11 to 13, 2011.

The culmination of this exercise was the practice of decontamination procedures and the attacks in the mines of Capelton and Eustis. A total of 400 reservists took part in the assault in which blank ammunition or paint, smoke bombs and grenade simulators were used to contribute to the realism of the exercise.

The brown box with the black ribbon and wax stamp contains the cremated remains of Wifred Haden. Wilfred and Edward were brothers and Wilfred was my grandfather. Wilfred was a World War 2 veteran who served in France. The Embassy of France in Toronto wrapped and sealed the remains for travel to France and gave me paperwork for customs clearance without searching the package. I buried Wilfred's remains with his brother on August 12 2018 exactly 74 years after Edward's death.

Representatives from the Government of Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces attended a military burial where an unknown Canadian soldier was laid to rest with military honours at Canadian Cemetery No. 2 in Neuville-St. Vaast, France on 23 August, 2017.

A light armoured vehicle (LAV-III) circulates on the battlefield during Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 1101 in Wainwright, Alberta, on October 24, 2011.

Exercise MAPLE RESOLVE 1101 (Ex MR1101) was conducted from October 1 to 28, 2011, in the training areas at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.

Ex MR1101 is a military training activity that focuses on combined arms teams. The exercise has a mandate to provide high-level training to nearly 400 troops. The troops are supported by more than 900 vehicles. This makes the exercise the largest in the history of the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre.

Members of 3PPCLI are seated and ready for take-off inside a CC-177 Globemaster prior departure for an airborne exercise called Pegasus Spear.

Exercise Pegasus Spear was a training event focusing on the parachuting skills of members of the Third Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (3PPCLI). It enabled over 120 parachute-qualified soldiers, military freefall soldiers and jump masters to hone their skills in airborne operations from a CC-177. This exercise was also significant as it was the first time members from 3PPCLI were dispatched from the RCAF largest aircraft.

429 (Transport) Squadron is the purveyor of strategic airlift for Canada. Since August 2007, the squadron has been flying the CC-177 Globemaster III. 8 Wing Trenton has been home base to the Bisons since 1990 and has performed a wide range of air transport roles on behalf of Canada - everything from delivering humanitarian aid to disaster zones around the world to ferrying supplies and Canadian troops in Afghanistan. ..

Bill Ross first set foot on the beach at Bernières on a morning of iron and fire. One morning in June, at around eight o'clock. That sixth of June nineteen forty-four, he ran as he had never run before in his life.... he ran towards this house, which later became a benevolent haven of peace for all the veterans..... That day, with his comrades from the Queen's Own Rifles regiment, he helped to liberate Bernières, Anisy and Anguerny, where he spent his first night in Normandy. The days which followed saw him help to repel German attacks on Bretteville and Norrey.... He finally fell, wounded, on the fourth of July at Carpiquet, wounded in body and in his heart. Evacuated, treated then recovered, he returned in time to participate in the Liberation of Northern France in September - then on to Belgium. Holland, Germany.....

So, Bill suffered, some of his comrades had been killed, and sometimes one can read, even today, in his tired eyes that have seen too much, a great man who has never lost the dignity of a free man, in love with freedom.

But Bill Ross is only one of the heroes who, by their acts of bravery and devotion to duty, allowed us to rid ourselves of the Brown Plague and to return to Peace and Honour, flouted during the occupation.

No, Bill is a man above all - a loving father and husband, an adorable grandfather who Quincy gazes longingly at, seeing in his eyes a brightness and love without end. Bill is a happy soul who sings softly still, on a summer afternoon, songs of affection and remembrance for his lost comrades.

We will remember them.

17th Annual Canadian International Sniper Concentration

The 17th Annual Canadian International Sniper Concentration is an excellent opportunity for teams from Canada’s land forces as well allied and police snipers to further develop capabilities related to sniper-specific skill sets. This is achieved by focusing on the operational experience and lessons learned by Canada and its allies, to create esprit de corps, to develop healthy competition and to generate discussion about ways to improve sniper skills-sets for all parties involved.

A WW2 era photo of a Canadian soldier posed beside his vehicle. Probably at a base in Canada. I think this is Dwight, the soldier pictured with his fiancee in 1943 in another photo I have posted. Other photos in the same group which I obtained at an antique show in Toronto have notations from Debert, Nova Scotia.

Can anyone add a little information about the make and type of vehicle?
