Our country was born on July 01 1867 and consisted of only four of the present ten provinces. Even then, both Quebec and Ontario contained much less territory than they do today as much of Canada was called Rupert's Land and owned by the Hudson Bay Company.
One hundred years later in 1967, our country really celebrated. That day was of some importance to my wife and I getting together for the long haul. Although we had known each other and dated a bit, previously, we bumped into each other at the celebrations at city hall in Toronto. I guess it was kismet.
I love my country & our wonderful flag since the day of its unveiling in my primary school years in 1965 in a special ceremony.
It was more than my pleasure to have raised & lowered her each day in some of those years at my school.
This would carry over into my every day life for the rest of my life as we have her displayed proudly on a dedicated flagpole in our front yard.
Canada Day is the national day of Canada. A federal statutory holiday, it celebrates the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, coming into force of the Constitution Act, 1867 (then called the British North America Act, 1867), which united the three separate colonies of Canada, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick into a single Dominion within the British Empire called Canada.Originally called Dominion Day the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. Canada Day celebrations take place throughout the country, as well as in various locations around the world, attended by Canadians living abroad.
