Intimate landscapes often reveal details, structure, patterns, geometry and nuances that are not usually noticed by the casual observer. To be able to show something new to viewers and even surprise them is the most rewarding aspect of photography.

This old porcelain cup and saucer belonged to my mother's aunt. Were she alive today, she'd be 114 :) She was a very adventurous woman who traveled widely, nursing in India and visiting Kashmir. I have photographs of her on horseback in India, and also standing beside her black Austin 7 car.
Wishing I knew her more about her travels, as I have several of her "Chinese" possessions, but no idea when she acquired them.
If anyone looking at this can tell me if the characters have a meaning, I'd love to know.
So I recently unpacked a box of antique calligraphy pens someone gave me a while ago. There are some amazing ones in there including ultrawide Coit pens. This was done using one of the Coits and some Senelier Walnut shellac ink on 130 year old paper collaged in my sketchbook. I forgot how beautiful the finish of the ink is— the camera doesn't pick up the glass-like finish on the thicker areas. The ink also bleeds well and can be diluted to varying opacities.
Today a calligrapher came to the office to help me out on a logo I was working on. I really love arabic calligraphy but I never had the chance to see a calligrapher work on something live. So when the guy came today I sat down with him and watched him work. Its really unreal. The guy can change handwritings as if I am changing fonts on a computer. He can flip flop from one style to another with such great ease it makes it all look too easy. Its seriously wonderful watching an artist at work. When I was studying design at university I always hated arabic type. Then one time I had to use it for a project and from the moment I started breaking down the letters I fell in love. Arabic is very flexible and you can do a lot with it, stuff you cant do with english. It is a lot harder to work with and learn though, but once you get the hang of it things do get better. By the way, any guys here planning on taking their girlfriends to McDonalds? I passed by today for breakfast and the place was decorated for valentine. Why? Do people actually go and celebrate valentine at McDonalds?
The text for a calligraphy is given by the customer. The calligraphy will be used in frameworks of a design project.
More calligraphy practice. Now I'm beginning to enjoy it.
The process of learning calligraphy starts out sort of technical, and I'm not that good with technical. I'll just have to keep pushing through.

This Arabic calligraphy of sorat Alfateha was done by Calligrapher Ayman Hassan living in Kuwait, and here the Ostath Dawoud Baktash (one of the best calligraphers in the world now) is fixing and teaching Ayman how to draw or write the letters the right way using red ink.. it was a very important lesson for me as well.
