at sunrise on new year's morning lulu and i went to the beach near our home... we were the only ones there.. :)
am posting this image today because its my father's birthday ~ and it was he who first revealed to me the joys of knowing dogs by heart *
when i was 7, dad took us from our little town in oregon all the way to california to meet and bring home our first basset hound ...
we named him "barney" after our street, barneburg road ~ and he was a true prince.
back in the days when dogs and kids could just roam free in smalltown america, barney used to leave when the school bus picked us up...
and then meet us when it arrived at our elementary school, nearly 2 miles away.. (sometimes on the way in the bus we'd see barney trotting along, clearly delighted that he was beating us there.. :)
everyone in town knew barney .. and sometimes a friendly policeman would call and say.. "if you're looking for barney, he's downtown greeting people in front of newberry's dime store!"
since then, we've had 12 basset hounds amongst us..
when "bark park" opened here, mom, my brother and i got a drinking fountain for it ~ for both dogs and people :) to honor the memory of our dad/husband.. and in the cement, in a spiral all around it, i wrote the names of 12 precious dogs..
am ever thankful to my father for first bringing their funny, all-encompassing joy and lovelight into our lives!

My friend Khaled tells me: This is a work of art in Arabic done about 300 years ago on the year 1139 Hijri calendar (We are now 1440).
The artist used The name of Allah (the Arabic word for God), The name Mohammad (the name of the Prophet of Islam), The four names of the first Islamic Caliphs (in order: Abu Bakr, Omar, Othman, Ali).
Thank you to those who have sympathised with the migraine issue - the pain is still with me, and I am still taking tablets, and being miserable, but it will go soon, and then life will return to normal.
There is something so beautiful about this Islamic calligraphy - it takes so many forms, but is an art form in itself. Do I find it so much more exquisite than our writings because I do not understand how to read it, or is it actually on a par with our ancient illuminated works produced by the monks, where the letters are understandable even if the words are not always. I have always been fascinated by the construction of words - the construction of language, the etymology, the way the letters and words have developed over the years, and the way that modern English, in particular, has changed even during the time I have been using it to communicate....
Sadly, I don't have an ear for either languages or music - I love to hear both, but my brain won't retain them...
Worn out nibs on a vintage inkwell. I love combining the old-world way of writing with modern calligraphy styles.

So I recently unpacked a box of antique calligraphy pens someone gave me a while ago. There are some amazing ones in there including ultrawide Coit pens. This was done using one of the Coits and some Senelier Walnut shellac ink on 130 year old paper collaged in my sketchbook. I forgot how beautiful the finish of the ink is— the camera doesn't pick up the glass-like finish on the thicker areas. The ink also bleeds well and can be diluted to varying opacities.

Today a calligrapher came to the office to help me out on a logo I was working on. I really love arabic calligraphy but I never had the chance to see a calligrapher work on something live. So when the guy came today I sat down with him and watched him work. Its really unreal. The guy can change handwritings as if I am changing fonts on a computer. He can flip flop from one style to another with such great ease it makes it all look too easy. Its seriously wonderful watching an artist at work. When I was studying design at university I always hated arabic type. Then one time I had to use it for a project and from the moment I started breaking down the letters I fell in love. Arabic is very flexible and you can do a lot with it, stuff you cant do with english. It is a lot harder to work with and learn though, but once you get the hang of it things do get better. By the way, any guys here planning on taking their girlfriends to McDonalds? I passed by today for breakfast and the place was decorated for valentine. Why? Do people actually go and celebrate valentine at McDonalds?

I love me a nice bit of type, but there are so many typefaces being released nowadays it's impossible to keep track of
