This is pretty much as difficult as it looks. I've just now begun learning Copperplate script and am thinking that using a comparable computer font might just be easier. Rather enjoying the dip pens though. This oblique one is absolutely wicked. :)

Calligraphy, is a beautiful form of art that has been passed on for centuries. It's not just the way letters are drawn, but also the sophistication of the artists creating those wonderful pieces.
Be inspired by our theme of the week and get creative! Take a new photo and share it with us in the Flickr Friday group adding the tags #FlickrFriday and #Calligraphy. We will feature some of our favorites next week.

I don't remember where I saw this character. Somewhere. Nor do I know what it means. It was black on white. I gave it another color, and some shadow.
Islamic calligraphy is the artistic practice of handwriting and calligraphy, based upon the alphabet in the lands sharing a common Islamic cultural heritage. It includes Arabic Calligraphy, Ottoman, and Persian calligraphy.[1][2] It is known in Arabic as khatt Islami (خط اسلامي), meaning Islamic line, design, or construction.[3]
The development of Islamic calligraphy is strongly tied to the Qur'an; chapters and excerpts from the Qur'an are a common and almost universal text upon which Islamic calligraphy is based. However, Islamic calligraphy is not limited to strictly religious subjects, objects, or spaces. Like all Islamic art, it encompasses a diverse array of works created in a wide variety of contexts.[4] The prevalence of calligraphy in Islamic art is not directly related to its non-figural tradition; rather, it reflects the centrality of the notion of writing and written text in Islam.[5] It is noteworthy, for instance, that the Prophet Muhammad is related to have said: "The first thing God created was the pen."[6]
Islamic calligraphy developed from two major styles: Kufic and Naskh. There are several variations of each, as well as regionally specific styles. Islamic calligraphy has also been incorporated into modern art beginning with the post-colonial period in the Middle East, as well as the more recent style of calligraffiti.
