Acadia was designed in Canada for the Hydrographic Survey of Canada and built by Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson at Newcastle-on-Tyne in England. Named after Acadia, the early colonial name for Atlantic Canada, she was launched in May 1913 and was commissioned that July upon her first voyage using the prefix CSS, which stands for "Canadian Survey Ship." She saw extensive use prior to 1917 surveying the waters along Canada's Atlantic coast, including tidal charting and depth soundings for various ports. Her first two seasons were spent in Hudson Bay, along with the first Canadian surveys of notorious Sable Island. In her first year she rescued the crew of a steamship crushed by ice in Hudson Bay, the first of many rescues the rugged steamship would make. Among her more enduring work was a survey of the Bay of Fundy which became her longest assignment prior to entering military service.

CSS 2000 leads two other CSS GPs past the west end of Hudson Lake on a gloomy day in early March.

Educators from schools in Chatham, Effingham and Bryan Counties in Georgia participate in a Teachers Institute hosted by Georgia Tech Univerity in Savannah. The institute provided teachers in a variety of disciplines ideas to incorporate archaeolgy into science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) lessons. The lessons, geared for middle and high school teachers included classroom, laboratory and field work. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' work on recovering the Civil War ironclad, CSS Georgia, and the Corps' efforts to engage the public in the ship's history initiated the institute. The body of South Shore Line #111 sits at East Troy RR's Mukwonago car barn, near the Elegant Farmer. This car was probably acquired for parts as it does not appear on the museum's 2015 roster.
