Cosmos is native to scrub and meadowland in Mexico where most of the species occur, as well as the United States, as far north as the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, Central America, and to South America as far south as Paraguay. One species, C. bipinnatus, is naturalized across much of the eastern United States and eastern Canada. It is also widespread over the high eastern plains of South Africa, where it was introduced via contaminated horse feed imported from Argentina during the Anglo-Boer War.
This one is Cosmos bipinnatus and was spotted between showers over a wall in Ramsgate Kent.

I thought I had uploaded this photo, but I didn't. This photo was probably taken about 10 years ago.

The garden this year was, hmmm, carefree?
I let it be, letting the cosmos and zinnia spread where they might, letting the basil bolt, letting the garden basically have its way.
It was freeing (for all of us).
These are the last of the cosmos, cradled in our home, nestled in autumn light. I will carry them forward in my heart.
Cosmos is a member of the Compositae or Asteraceae family, just like their ‘cousins’: sunflowers, marigolds, yarrow, daisies, zinnias, lettuce and dandelions.
Cosmos are my go to for filling my gardens. They bloom all summer long and fill the garden with greenery.

Photographed at my home, Yakima County, Washington. I didn't expect these flowers to be blooming this late in the year after a couple of mild frosts. IMG_9485
