The consciousness below thee is ever-expanding

in different ways from those known to thee.

Aye, it, though in space-time below thee,

is ever growing in ways that are different from

those that were part of the ways of thine own.

For know that it grows as a result of thy growth

but not in the same way that thou didst grow.

The growth that thou had and have in the present

have brought into being a cause and effect.

No consciousness follows the path of those before it,

else all would be repetition and vain.

Each consciousness in the cycle it exists in

follows its own path to the ultimate goal.

Each plays its part in the Plan of the Cosmos.

Each plays its part in the ultimate end.

The farther the cycle, the greater its

knowledge and ability to blend the Law of the whole.

Consciousness

Sentience of internal, external, or virtual existence

Individual consciousnesses or communities? Complex plants have made me ask that question repeatedly. Are these banana leaves 'cities' in the larger 'nation' of the tree? I wonder if we'll ever know?

Standing by the lake aware that one's conscious mind is at rest, if only for a moment...

ruminations on Harold Bloom's Genius

The question we need to put to any writer must be: does she or he augment our consciousness, and how is it done? I find this a rough but effectual test: however I have been entertained, has my awareness been intensified, my consciousness widened and clarified? If not, then I have encountered talent, not genius. What is best and oldest in myself has not been activated.

I would propose that the writer apply the "best and oldest in myself".

Consciousness is an end in itself. We torture ourselves getting somewhere, and when we get there it is nowhere, for there is nowhere to get to. D. H. Lawrence.

David Herbert Lawrence (11 September 1885 – 2 March 1930) was an English writer and poet. His collected works represent, among other things, an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. Lawrence's writing explores issues such as sexuality, emotional health, vitality, spontaneity, and instinct. His works include Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile he called his "savage pilgrimage". At the time of his death, his public reputation was that of a pornographer who had wasted his considerable talents. E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation." Later, the literary critic F. R. Leavis championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness. Source Wikipedia.

La Mer

Charles Trenet

youtu.be/8MLzijpQkJI

Louis Charles Augustin Georges Trenet ; 18 May 1913 – 19 February 2001)[1] was a French singer-songwriter, who composed both the music and the lyrics to nearly a thousand songs over a career that lasted more than sixty years. These include "La Mer", "Boum!" and "Y'a d'la joie".

"Beyond the Sea" is the English-language version of the French song "La Mer" by Charles Trenet, popularized by Bobby Darin in 1959. While the French original was an ode to the sea, Jack Lawrence – who composed the English lyrics – turned it into a love song. Source Wikipedia.

I know the school of thought that you should ask a human subject for permission to take their picture, which I agree is nice for some situations, but it doesn't allow you to capture the unselfconscious ballet of human behavior. (Here, admittedly, self-consciousness is on display, but that's the charming point.) We in fact did interact before and after I shot this, and they were aware that I was there shooting them shooting each other.

"I couldn't hear the water, and Caddy opened the door.

'Why, Benjy.' she said. She looked at me and I went and she put her arms around me. 'Did you find Caddy again.' she said. 'Did you think Caddy had run away.' Caddy smelled like trees.

She smelled like trees.

'Come on, now.' Dilsey said, 'You too big to sleep with folks. You a big boy now. Thirteen years old. Big enough to sleep by yourself in Uncle Maury's room.' Dilsey said.

'You a big boy.' Dilsey said, '... Hush now, so you can go to sleep.' The room went away but I didn't hush, and the room came back and Dilsey came and sat on the bed, looking at me.

'Good night, honey.' Dilsey said. The room went black. Caddy smelled like trees.

We looked up into the tree where she was."

The Sound and the Fury

William Faulkner

This quotation is taken from the Benjy section of Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. Faulkner frequently used stream of consciousness in his writing. In the Benjy section, the story is told through Benjy, who has a severe intellectual disability; he is pure and untainted by society, and while he is unable to talk he expresses his feelings through his imagination and sensations of the natural world. Benjy loves his sister Caddy, and Caddy is the only family member who shows genuine care and love towards Benjy. Benjy sees Caddy as his source of comfort and order. He does not distinguish between the past and the present and perceives time in a nonlinear way. Benjy's memory of losing Caddy was associated with him having to sleep alone at the age of 13. In Benjy's early memories of Caddy, he associates Caddy's innocence with the smell of the trees in which they used to play. When Caddy entered adolescence and tries to wear perfume and have relationships, she no longer smells like trees and loses her innocence. This throws Benjy's world into chaos, and he responds by moaning and crying.

Stream of consciousness on a warm winter day...

Realizing that I am happiest driving away in my car, all by myself, with my camera, and my car full of props.... just in case I find the perfect spot (whatever and wherever that may be) ... even if it is only for an hour because there is a multitude of other things that I need to be doing ... and even though, my horoscope, as a Libra, tells me that I there is nothing I dislike more than being alone.... so UNTRUE.... and asked by someone if they could come along and see me set up my props and watch how "the process" works .... and me, wondering... WHAT Process?!! Doesn't everyone work this way?... and thinking that someone watching me do this is probably not going to work out well... and then... thinking that winter hasn't been all that bad... and there is beauty in the monochromatic dark months .... and wondering if the process of letting go applies to things...and people... and thoughts... and feelings ... and, yeah, I can do this ... Just when you think that maybe you are actually getting good at something... something else comes along to remind you that ... no, you're not all that good!! And why doesn't everyone have hobbies? And how can some people be perfectly satisfied just cleaning their house and cooking all day?... and why is there nothing hanging on their walls? And how can some people sit in front of the mind numbing TV for hours on end? I don't care how many channels they give you... there is still nothing worth watching. And if you don't work and you don't have hobbies, what the heck do you do all day? Much of the time, being alone is a good thing.... no one to ask annoying questions and talk your ears off. And silence IS golden. And, finally, ending the day, once again, with the realization that I have a LOT to learn, and I'm never going to live long enough to figure it all out. Yeah... it was a day of deep thoughts. I really should just keep these thoughts to myself.... tomorrow is another day. LOL!
