KENYA, Ol Kinyei, Maasai Mara: In a photograph taken by Make It Kenya 14 June 2015, a Secretary Bird a Lapet-Faced Vulture sits atop a tree in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy in Kenya's Maasai Mara. The management of Ol Kinyei and similar conservancies bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve and in other areas of Kenya is an alternative approach to wildlife conservation. The land on which the conservancies are located is leased from local communities who directly benefit from its use to naturally host and protect wildlife populations. The privately owned and managed conservancies also offer employment to members of these communities and further opportunity of training in different areas of expertise from guides and trackers to chefs and camp management. Strict regulation of visitor numbers and the construction of camps inside the conservancies also limit the amount of people and vehicles present at any given time, offering tourists a much more personal and exclusive wildlife safari experience while at the same time reducing stress on and the disturbance of wildlife populations, which quickly begin to return and repopulate areas and land transformed under the conservancy model. Charitable donation by the EBRD Community Initiative

This year, the EBRD Community Initiative made a charitable contribution of EUR 50,000 to the Women Access to Entrepreneurship Development and Training Society (WAEDAT).

WAEDAT was founded in 2004 and launched under the patronage of Her Majesty Queen Rania in 2005. The organisation provides mentoring and training for women and young entrepreneurs in Jordan, to raise their awareness of local development opportunities and provide basic skills to start their own businesses.

The EBRD Community Initiative donation will enable WAEDAT to support local women entrepreneurs in strengthening and expanding their business activities.

There was an exhibition of the local goods and crafts, produced by the members of WAEDAT in the conference centre.

Adriatica is a true village and a project unlike any other in the world. The goal is to create a community that in a relatively short period of time replicates villages that have taken centuries to develop. The project involves not only proper architecture and visual design, but also expertise in culture and social interaction. Not just how to build, but how to arrange the pieces of daily life, from where we live, work, shop and play, to form a cohesive unit. View their website at: www.adriaticamckinney.com/

I’m as guilty as the next, no doubt, for often I think about, even talk and write about, the sad condition of our world, and the evident decline of morals and ethics in those about me. So, it feels really good today to tell you of a caring, loving act that is working at this moment here in my mountains–the San Bernardinos of southern California, including among others, the communities of Crestline, Arrowhead, and Running Springs.
