sister's communion today!! took sooo many pictures and she looked so lovely in all of them.

"I almost forgot what it used to be like—when we played in cardboard boxes and I wore white dresses outside in the dirt. Remember that, when there were no troubles and we played pirates outside in that tree house (it wasn’t really a tree house, if you recall; it was a few planks of woods teetering precariously between a few tree branches), and when we got tired we pitched camp in my backyard and named the stars? Then my mom would make us cookies and come out to check on us every so often. And during the summer, when you went away to camp, I would sit up on those planks and eat popsicles and let the sun-warmed juice trickle down my legs. I would pretend that you were my prince and that you were in battle and when you came home we would live happily ever after, because you had slain the dragon.

After I while, I realize, we grew apart. And we grew up. The planks of wood snapped and the one that remained became home to a family of birds. Our imaginations shriveled. Remember when we could pretend that a box was a magical kingdom?

I climbed into one of those same boxes the other day. I hardly fit, but I managed, and I sat in there and closed my eyes.

My mind went blank. I could only think, “I’m in a cardboard box. I feel so stupid. This feels wrong. I’m not a kid anymore.”

You never slew the dragon. You ran away and we let the dragon take over and let it become the world that we lived in, and we would never live happily ever after because that dragon stole our imaginations and my mother

Created this cake for a lovely lady who celebrated her son's first communion today. She found this design at cake central and fell in love with it. I made this version and my own gumpaste chalice. Amaretto cake with vanilla buttercream.

This is a first communion I was hired to photograph. Just a simple shot that sums up this day in this young girl's life!

Communion at encounter is served by taking the bread yourself, when you feel ready, and dipping it in the grape juice or wine.

The neighbor's granddaughter is making her communion this weekend. I made several "itsies" to dress up the platter of crosses.

Loved doing this cake for my daughter's First Communion.
