Description: 2014-04-12 - Making plans the night before for a milkyway session that I so yearn for, it was called off upon waking up at 2am to a heavy rain. Making my way back to bed, I made a mental note to wake up in a few hours with hope that I would get some nice sunrise instead at the Putrajaya Dam. Arriving late at location that morning to a sky that starts to "burn", I was struggling to decide on the composition that I would stayed for my time-lapse shoot. After a few minutes (and losing some of the "burning sky" moment), I decided to stay at this composition for a whole 600++ frames. Alhamdulillah the clouds formation and lights fall was one of the beautiful sunrise that I have witness. The image was one of the frames in the middle of the time-lapse session that day as the sun starts to come out of the horizon.

How can a library, a theatre and other cultural partners successfully coexist under one roof? Firstly by breaking down the walls...and secondly, by combining the architecture of public space with the design of programmability. The result is called Hub Kerkrade: not only a resource centre, but also a hotbed of knowledge, information, education and entertainment.
Kerkrade is a city in the southernmost province of the Netherlands, close to Germany. Hub Kerkrade, located in a former shopping centre, has a surface area of no less than 5,000 m2, which houses the theatre, the library, various cultural partners and the nearby Kerkrade Music School. This location is part of the revitalised city centre. The design of the Hub is a new co-creation of international creative guide and architect Aat Vos (design concept, strategy, creative direction) in collaboration with Mars Interior Designers (design, engineering).
Originally, the library occupied half of the building's surface and was separated from the theatre by a wall. The removal of the partitions created more space, light and a new idea for the foyer. This almost always empty space has been transformed into a multifunctional shared living space where people can work, study or meet. The focal point of this space is in the foyer: the theatre staircase is equipped with a beautiful banister and a reddish-pink carpet, covered on both sides with blue steel. The foyer bar was made of copper and is now set against a background of raw bricks, combined with an LED screen and a light box. The "break drinks cabinet" steals the show, both in terms of its size and the colour-changing lighting.

Alviso, a small town in the San Francisco Bay Area, is always fun to visit. It's only 20 min from home and workplace, so I like to go there once in a while for sunset. I took this shot on a clear day. I wish there would be more days with clouds or rain.
Do you recognize the title?
I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, merged them selectively, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance. I welcome and appreciate your critical feedback.

The Antarctica Trip - (01/01/23 to 01/21/23)
On the first day of 2023, my wife and I flew to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in preparation for a cruise to Antarctica, via The Falkland Islands and South Georgia Island. We’d never visited Antarctica and, in fact, felt a little unprepared for this trip since we’d only been on one cruise previously...and that was many years ago when we went on a cruise to Alaska…and that one trip to Alaska was enough to let my wife know that she was very prone to seasickness. Consequently, she was very concerned about this much longer trip because of the potential for rough weather.
We spent several days in Buenos Aires before we finally boarded the ship on 01/06/23 and headed off towards the Falkland Islands. The ship we were on was very nice…clean and comfortable room, friendly staff, incredibly interesting folks for lectures: A former astronaut, a former college professor with a doctorate in Ornithology and a geologist.
The photos:
Until we made landfall in the Falklands, the only wildlife we would see were the many pelagic birds that occasionally accompanied our ship. The larger birds, albatross, giant petrels, etc. managed to effortlessly soar over the swells, seemingly without ever flapping their wings. The smaller birds like the prions, also appeared to not waste much energy flapping their wings and were fun to watch as they maneuvered back and forth alongside our ship. Most of the photos I took from the ship were taken from our balcony on deck six. The balcony was a great location for landscape shots when we were near shore…but the height above the water made it difficult to photograph birds that were close to the water’s surface. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking with it. :-)
I plan to post photos taken at the several various locations we visited, as well as any I took while we were underway. I apologize in advance for the small size of the underway photos because they were taken either from the ship’s bow, stern or our balcony on deck 6, and I was a long way from the water. For the most part, and for no particular reason, I’ll be posting the photos chronologically.

From Wikipedia: The upland goose or Magellan goose (Chloephaga picta) is a sheldgoose of the shelduck-sheldgoose subfamily of the Anatidae, the biological family that includes the ducks and most duck-like waterfowl such as the geese and swans. Sheldgeese resemble true geese and display similar habits, yet they are more closely related to shelducks and ducks.
This species nests and breeds close to water (rivers, ponds, oceans) either on the ground or near it among vegetation, usually in grasslands or coastal meadows in the Falkland Islands or in southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego at the beginning of the austral summer. Population estimates suggest the insular subpopulations are stable, but continental populations show a recent decline in abundance. Upland geese are herbivores, specializing in plant leaves, stems and seeds.
Food and feeding:
The upland goose is primarily a herbivore, feeding mostly of seeds, leaves, stems, and other plant matter. They are very gregarious, and flocks of thousands of birds can be found grazing in one pasture alone. They are considered pests by farmers due to the fact that they eat on the pastures that are used for cattle and sheep, and because they claim that upland geese significantly decrease crop yield. However, a recent study claims that while sheldgeese do reduce wheat cover, they do not reduce overall wheat yield and they might even provide an ecosystem service through weed grazing.

Life is but a brief journey through time. The Awe of the Grand Canyon makes us pause and ponder the real scale of time. A true beast of nature, the climate, has had it up’s and Downs: Hot periods, Cold periods, Glaciers to Floods, Tropics to Mountains, and, Today, here sets one of the great testaments to those violent periods in the evolution of Earth.
Mans existence is but a blink in the vast time scale of Earth. And yet, from her violent past, she leaves us this great spectacle so we may glimpse her troubled past.
