The interior. Lame, I know.

The town of Fira is a typical Cycladic village made of charming white houses with blue windows and doors, separated from each other by small paved streets. Many of its beautiful buildings were constructed back in the times of the Venetian invasion, including some blue domed churches and sun-bathed verandas that offer an incredible view of the volcano and the sunset.

Big Cottonwood Canyon, Utah.

The sandstone cliffs here are so gorgeous. I love the contrast between their highly textured stones and the silky water beneath. Something odd happened to my camera around this point - likely related to swimming around with it. I rather like the crazy thing it started doing with light-leakage, but I do hope it doesn't last forever.

I checked out the flowering plants this morning on the south side of the swimming pool in the gated community that I live in and the only butterflies that I saw were Fiery Skipper, Sachem, Eufala Skipper and a brief stop of an Orange Sulphur.

This afternoon I returned to the flowering plants and all 3 skippers were there as expected but I saw a small butterfly that I didn't recognize so I made sure that I was able to get a few shots off before it got away from me. I checked my butterfly resource, Butterflies through Binoculars of the West by Jeffrey Glassberg and located the ID of this image as being a Western Pygmy-Blue, the smallest butterfly in North America and a lifer butterfly for me.

Halemau`u Trail, in the switchbacks section, with clouds moving in.

This ridge marks the northern edge of Haleakalā Crater, in Haleakalā National Park, Maui, Hawai`i. This hike leads down to the Crater floor where one can either hike back up for a 5-mile round-trip, or continue on into the Crater.

At the end of this ridge, between here and that peak in the distance, is the Ko`olau Gap - a stretch of land where much of the top of the mountain, and subsequent lava flows, moved downslope to the sea. This gap was not always there; the slope of Haleakalā once continued upwards over the Crater, until it weathered and eroded away - much of it down through the Ke`anae Valley.

The views are stunning on a clear day, but the beauty is often enhanced as the fog is carried in by the trade winds. One minute it can be clear and the next one can be enveloped by a warm moist cloud, with the ferns dripping alongside the trail.

Cliffside Apartments is a heritage registered apartment building that opened in 1937. It was excellent views along the Brisbane Brisbane and towards Brisbane CBD. The style of architecture is English or Tudor Revival.

Week 31

Brocation! I had mentioned the last couple weeks of an exiting even that would be taking place and it has just happened. Last Sunday after posting my week 30 blog post I packed up and headed out with Alex, Paul, George, and Scott to Scott's lake house in Vermont. We were there until Wednesday when we packed up and moved to Paul's cabin in New Hampshire where we stayed until Saturday when we headed back home. Scott's lake house was an amazing place to stay. It is a very old styled house with the lake right in the back yard. We spent a day in Burlington, climbed a fire tower at a state park, but when we weren't adventuring around, his house was a great place to chill with many fun activities such as kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, or playing pool in the man cave. Paul's cabin I have been to numerous times in the past but almost always with family. Being able to experience it with just my good friends was almost completely different. The cabin isn't really a place that you can sit around without developing some sort of cabin fever so we spent a long of time outdoors. We spent a lot of time at one of my favorite swimming spots as well as going out tubing on a river, taking long exposures of the mountains, and walking around North Conway. Now that brocation is over I am extremely sore and tired but I loved every minute of it. It sure lived up to the hype.

I can't wait to see what this next week will bring!

The Buddhas of Bamiyan were two 6th century monumental statues of standing buddha carved into the side of a cliff in the Bamiyan valley in the Hazarajat region of central Afghanistan, 230 km northwest of Kabul at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Built in 507 AD (smaller), and 554 AD, (larger) the statues represented the classic blended style of Gandhara art. They were dynamited and destroyed in March 2001 by the Taliban, on orders from leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, after the Taliban government declared that they were un-islamic.
