[EN]Old castle near town Jihlava. One of the oldest and largest castles in the Moravian Danube type. It is also interesting that there are two castles in one. Old with a tower and a upper palace and a new one with a second palace. One of the best archaeologically explored castles in Moravia.

[CZ]Starý hrad blízko Jihlavy. Jeden z nejstarších a největších hradů dunajského typu na Moravě. Zajímavé mimojiné i tím, že jsou to defakto dva hrady v jednom a to i historicky. Starý hrad s věží a horním palácem a nový níže s příslušenstvím a druhým opevněním. Navíc i jeden z archeologicky nejprozkoumanějších hradů na Moravě.

It does not matter how many times you visit Sconey Castle (National Trust) the views around the castle are amazing. Each time they are different, according to the time of day and light conditions and the change of colours to the time of year.

And for me, it makes a welcome change to birds, butterflies and insects.

Another 7 to 10 days will see the extensive gardens in full bloom.

The Red House was built in 1664 as the original workhouse within the walls of Framlingham Castle, a magnificent 12th century fortress with a long and colourful past. An early motte and bailey or ringwork Norman castle was built on the Framlingtonb site in Suffolk by 1148, but this was destroyed by Henry II of England in the aftermath of the Revolt of 1173-1174.

Its replacement, constructed by Roger Bigod, the Earl of Norfolk, was unusual for the time in having no central keep, but instead using a curtain wall with thirteen mural towers to defend the centre of the castle. Despite this, the castle was successfully taken by King John in 1216 after a short siege. By the end of the 13th century, Framlingham had become a luxurious home, surrounded by extensive parkland used for hunting.

Dunster Castle is a former motte and bailey castle, now a country house, in the village of Dunster, Somerset, England. The castle lies on the top of a hill called the Tor, and has been fortified since the late Anglo-Saxon period. After the Norman Conquest of England in the 11th century.

Rhuddlan Castle, Rhuddlan, North Wales.

Rhuddlan Castle Coordinates...53.2892° N, 3.4646° W

Rhuddlan Castle ) is a castle located in Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, Wales. It was erected by Edward I in 1277,

following the First Welsh War.

Much of the work was overseen by master mason James of Saint George. Rhuddlan, which was not completed until 1282, was built concurrently with Flint Castle, at a time when King Edward I of England was consolidating his conquest of Wales. It was temporarily his residence, and his daughter, Elizabeth, is presumed to have been born there.

Rhuddlan was planned as a concentric castle. It has a unique 'diamond' in layout as the gatehouses are positioned at the corners of the square baileys instead of along the sides like at Flint, Harlech or Beaumaris. Records of construction costs show that it was the major piece of building work being carried out by the English during the late 1270s.

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until 1633. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison.

Dolbadarn Castle is a fortification built by the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great during the early 13th century, at the base of the Llanberis Pass, in northern Wales. The castle was important both militarily and as a symbol of Llywelyn's power and authority. The castle features a large stone keep, which historian Richard Avent considers "the finest surviving example of a Welsh round tower". In 1284 Dolbadarn was taken by Edward I, who removed some of its timbers to build his new castle at Caernarfon. The castle was used as a manor house for some years, before falling into ruin. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was a popular destination for painters interested in Sublime and Picturesque landscapes. It is now owned by Cadw and managed as a tourist attraction, and is protected as a grade I listed building.

Dolbadarn Castle was built in either the 1220s or the 1230s by Llywelyn the Great, at the base of the Llanberis Pass, overlooking the lake of Llyn Padarn in northern Wales. Traditionally the Welsh princes had not constructed castles, instead using undefended palaces called llysoedd, or courts. From the late 11th century onwards, the Normans had advanced into Wales, taking lands in the north and establishing a band of occupied territory in the south called the Welsh Marches. During the 12th century, some timber and earthwork castles began to be built but in small numbers.

Closer view through the arrow loop [ window ] at Harlech Castle.

Caernarfon Castle was not the first structure to be located on that site, however. Before the castle was built, there was once a Roman fort located there, and after that, a Norman motte and bailey castle. The fact that these fortresses existed here before shows just how effective the location was for defence of the area

Thanks everybody for your appreciated comments, favourites and view

The castle is situated on the Laich of Moray, a fertile plain that was once the swampy foreshore of Spynie Loch. This was originally a more defensive position than it appears today, long after the loch was drained.

The motte is a huge man-made mound, with steep sides and a wide ditch separating it from the bailey. The whole site is enclosed by a water-filled ditch, which is more a mark of its boundary than it is a serious defensive measure.

Duffus Castle was built by a Flemish man named Freskin, who came to Scotland in the first half of the 1100s. After an uprising by the ‘men of Moray’ against David I in 1130, the king sent Freskin north as a representative of royal authority.

He was given the estate of Duffus, and here he built an earthwork-and-timber castle. Freskin’s son William adopted the title of ‘de Moravia’ – of Moray. By 1200, the family had become the most influential noble family in northern Scotland, giving rise to the earls of Sutherland and Clan Murray.

In about 1270, the castle passed to Sir Reginald Cheyne the Elder, Lord of Inverugie. He probably built the square stone keep on top of the motte, and the curtain wall encircling the bailey. In 1305, the invading King Edward I of England gave him a grant of 200 oaks from the royal forests of Darnaway and Longmorn, which were probably used for the castle’s floors and roofs.

Castle Tioram

Castle Tioram (/ˈtʃiːrəm/) (Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal Tioram, meaning "dry castle") is a ruined castle that sits on the tidal island Eilean Tioram in Loch Moidart, Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. It is located west of Acharacle, approximately 80 km (50 mi) from Fort William. Though hidden from the sea, the castle controls access to Loch Shiel. It is also known to the locals as "Dorlin Castle". The castle is a scheduled monument.

Castle Tioram was one of Somerled's castles in his time (the twelfth century),[4] though some may date it from the thirteenth or fourteenth century.[5] It appears to have originally been a principal stronghold of Clann Ruaidhrí.[6] Eilean Tioram, the island the fortress sits upon, is first recorded in a charter of Cairistíona Nic Ruaidhrí, daughter of Ailéan mac Ruaidhrí.[7] According to early modern tradition, preserved by the seventeenth-century Sleat History, the castle was erected by Ailéan's granddaughter, Áine Nic Ruaidhrí.[8] The castle certainly served as the seat of the latter's Clann Raghnaill descendants for centuries.[9]

As such, Castle Tioram is the traditional seat of the Clanranald (Clann Raghnaill) branch of Clan Donald. The castle was seized by Government forces in around 1692 when the clan chief Allan Macdonald of Clanranald joined the Jacobite Court in France, despite having sworn allegiance to William II & Mary II. A small garrison was stationed in the castle until the Jacobite rising of 1715 when Allan recaptured and torched it, purportedly to keep it out of the hands of Hanoverian forces. It has been unoccupied since that time, although there are some accounts suggesting it was partially inhabited thereafter including for the storage of firearms from the De Tuillay in the 1745 Jacobite Uprising and Lady Grange's account of her kidnapping.

In this photo I tried to make use of a yellow filter to enhance the sky values in a black and white image. So I added a Cokin filter holder and Cokin light yellow filter. The effect is not as pronounced as I would have expected. Maybe I will have to go red next time.

Ammersoyen Castle was built around 1350 near the Maas river by the Van Herlaer family. It has a rectangular almost square layout of four wings centered around a little courtyard with heavy round towers at its four corners. It shows similarity to other square castles like Helmond Castle, Muiden Castle and the partially remaining Radboud Castle. Ammersoyen Castle is connected to the separate bailey by a bridge and the entire site is moated.

Despite being a couple of minutes drive from where I stay when I visit Scotland, I have very few pictures of Castle Stalker that I'm actually happy with. This one isn't too bad I think, although I would have preferred a slightly higher tide.
