Edzell Castle is a ruined 16th-century castle, with an early-17th-century walled garden. It is located close to Edzell, and is around 5 miles north of Brechin, in Angus.

Edzell Castle was begun around 1520 by David Lindsay, 9th Earl of Crawford, and expanded by his son, Sir David Lindsay, Lord Edzell, who also laid out the garden in 1604. The castle saw little military action, and was, in its design, construction and use, more of a country house than a defensive structure. It was briefly occupied by English troops during Oliver Cromwell's invasion of Scotland in 1651. In 1715 it was sold by the Lindsay family, and eventually came into the ownership of the Earl of Dalhousie. It was given into state care in the 1930s, and is now a visitor attraction run by Historic Environment Scotland. The castle consists of the original tower house and building ranges around a courtyard. The adjacent Renaissance walled garden, incorporating intricate relief carvings, is unique in Scotland. It was replanted in the 1930s, and is considered to have links to esoteric traditions, including Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry.

Ammersoyen Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in the country. When visiting the castle, built in the 1300‘s, you will immediately feel the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

You’re welcome to either explore the castle by yourself, or on a guided tour. While you walk around, you will visit the chambers of the keep, the knights’ hall and the women’s quarters. After taking the stairs inside the vast, meters thick walls, you reach the museum attic where the archaeological finds from the moat will give an impression of the castle’s history.

Children will have an excellent time exploring: in the museum attic are all kinds of activities organised for them and in the weapon room they can try on parts of a body harness. The castle also boasts a gift shop and in the tavern you can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat. Ammersoyen Castle organises events for young and old.

Harlech Castle is a Grade I listed medieval fortification built onto a rocky knoll close to the Irish Sea. It was built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289 at the relatively modest cost of £8,190. Over the next few centuries, the castle played an important part in several wars, withstanding the siege of Madog ap Llywelyn between 1294 and 1295, but falling to Prince Owain Glyndŵr in 1404. It then became Glyndŵr's residence and military headquarters for the remainder of the uprising until being recaptured by English forces in 1409. During the 15th century Wars of the Roses, Harlech was held by the Lancastrians for seven years, before Yorkist troops forced its surrender in 1468, a siege memorialised in the song "Men of Harlech". Following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642, the castle was held by forces loyal to Charles I, holding out until 1647 when it became the last fortification to surrender to the Parliamentary armies. In the 21st century the ruined castle is managed by Cadw, the Welsh Government's historic environment service, as a tourist attraction.

UNESCO considers Harlech, with three others at Beaumaris, Conwy and Caernarfon, to be one of "the finest examples of late 13th century and early 14th century military architecture in Europe", and it is classed as a World Heritage Site.

Skenfrith Castle is a ruined castle in the village of Skenfrith in Monmouthshire, Wales. The fortification was established by the Normans in the wake of the invasion of England in 1066, to protect the route from Wales to Hereford. Possibly commissioned by William fitz Osbern, the Earl of Hereford, the castle comprised earthworks with timber defences. In 1135, a major Welsh revolt took place and in response King Stephen brought together Skenfrith Castle and its sister fortifications of Grosmont and White Castle to form a lordship known as the "Three Castles", which continued to play a role in defending the region from Welsh attack for several centuries

The ruins of Castle Acre Castle in Norfolk – all that is left of the castle built soon after the Battle of Hastings by William de Warenne, the Earl of Surrey. It is a well-preserved example of a motte-and-bailey castle, and remains one of the most impressive Norman earthworks in the country.

By 1397 the fortifications were in ruins and, despite restoration work by Sir Edward Coke at the start of the 17th century, the decline continued until the 20th century. In 1971, Thomas Coke, the Earl of Leicester, placed the castle into the guardianship of the state. The site is maintained by English Heritage.

Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age (2nd century AD), although the nature of the early settlement is unclear. There has been a royal castle on the rock since at least the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continued to be a royal residence until 1633. From the 15th century the castle's residential role declined, and by the 17th century it was principally used as military barracks with a large garrison.

Waardenburg Castle, locally known as Kasteel Waardenburg, lies next to the village of Waardenburg, in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands.

Waardenburg Castle nowadays is a remnant of a castle with a polygonal shape, dating back to around 1283.

The castle was preceded by a wooden castle built in 1265. It was then known as Hiern Castle, named after the hill it was built on. This wooden castle was founded by a Rudolf Cock. His ancestors owned the castle until 1401, which was then known as Weerdenbergh Castle. This name translates as "washland hill".

During the Eighty Years War, in the 16th century, Waardenburg Castle was taken by surprise and pillaged. The castle was heavily damaged in the process; only its heavy walls and the shells of the towers survived. The castle remained a ruin until 1627 when a Johan Vijgh gained ownership and started partially rebuilding the castle. During this rebuilding the bailey and the south wing, in which the entrance gate was situated, were completely demolished.

In the following centuries the castle was successively owned by the Aylva and Van Pallandt families.

Even in 1895 the eastern wing of the castle was enlarged and fitted with a little round stair tower.

Today, Waardenburg Castle lies separated from the river Waal by a dike. But in earlier centuries the river flowed by its walls. In 2011 the castle was refurbished. Waardenburg Castle is now owned by the "Friends of the Castles of Gelderland"-foundation and used as an office. It can not be visited.
