Hydroprogne caspia

Young adult from Ottawa NWR, Ohio.

Adult Caspian Tern Hydroprogne caspia at Bijol island, Gambia January 2013. There were just a handful aggressive birds during our visit on the island 21 January 2013. One egg was found, and the breeding season is probably just about to start these days for the Caspian Terns in Gambia. Bijol Islands holds the only Caspian Tern colony in Gambia, and it is supposed count about 10 thousand pairs.

Russia, Republic of Kalmykia, Manych lake, 08/18/2009

學名: Sterna caspia

英名: Caspian Tern

Family : Laridae (鷗科). Length: 51 cm.

Caspian Tern is the world's largest tern with a length of 48–56 cm, a wingspan of 127–140 cm. Adult birds have black legs, and a long thick red-orange bill with a small black tip. They have a white head with a black cap and white neck, belly and tail. The upper wings and back are pale grey; the underwings are pale with dark primary feathers. In flight, the tail is less forked than other terns and wing tips black on the underside. In winter, the black cap is still present (unlike many other terns), but with some white streaking on the forehead. The call is a loud heron-like croak. Their breeding habitat is large lakes and ocean coasts in North America (including the Great Lakes), and locally in Europe (mainly around the Baltic Sea and Black Sea), Asia, Africa, and Australasia (Australia and New Zealand). They feed mainly on fish, which they dive for, hovering high over the water and then plunging. They also occasionally eat large insects, the young and eggs of other birds and rodents. They may fly up to 60 km from the breeding colony to catch fish.

Caspian is a Tern, by the way.

One of the attractions at in early June is the Common and Caspian Terns fishing at the mouth of Bronte Harbour on Lake Ontario during the smelt run.

The Caspian horse is a beautiful creature with a wonderful temperament.

They have beautiful movement which, making them desirable show ponies. Thought to be extinct for 1300 years, Caspians once graced the royal seal of King Darius-550 B.C.

Caspians were often depicted in ancient Persian statuettes, friezes and writings going back to 3000 B.C.

The Caspian Breed was rediscovered in 1965 (Afraz et al., 2005).Caspian Horse are the oldest equine breed still in existence apart from the Asiatic Wild Horse.

No taller than 12.2hh, they are not a pony, but a perfectly proportioned small horse.

Perfect children’s mounts, driving horses, and small sport horse.

Caspian: A Lesson In Anonymity

The lighting set up inside The Triple (a bar) consisted of three overhead lights dimmed to about 50% brightness - giving off about as much light as the lamp on the table next to my couch. So I set my ISO at 1200 and did what I could. I'm really impressed at some of the shots I was able to pull off, even with shooting at 1/4 or 1/6 of a second for some. The three lights mostly lit up the drum kit, leaving the three guitarists and one bassist of Caspian, dimly backlit with dark faces. I enjoy the way the shots came out under the circumstances. Though the amount of grain in these shots is pretty aggravating.

Oh, and listen to Caspian. Seriously. They're mind altering.

My dear friends in Caspian brought their monstrous sound to biggest stage I've had the privilege to watch them play.

I hope I did them justice in whatever small way I could.

On our last trip to Puerto Rico, my camera broke. The good news is that I got a new camera that is much better.
