The Caspian tern is a large distinctive gull-like tern of shallow coastal waters and, particularly outside of the breeding season, inland lakes and rivers throughout New Zealand. It is an attractive sleek species whose guttural call is often heard before the bird is seen.
Huntington Beach - Bordered on one side by Pacific Coast Highway and oil fields and houses on the other, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve wetlands is a 300 acre coastal sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds. There's a wooden bridge crossing over a tidal inlet and a 1.5 mile loop trail providing spectacular wildlife viewing.

The Bluegill fell all the way to the water from 30 or 40 feet and the Tern did not catch it again until after it hit the water.
Caspian Terns are regular but uncommon breeders in western and central parts of the island. This one was a fresh spring arrival on the Avalon Peninsula. May 1, 2011.
Would have liked to get a shot with the adult and chick closer together, but hey, you take what you can get.
The frozen Caspian sea in Turkmenbashi city. I did not risk to walk further, though the ship behind was cracking the ice to reach the shore.
This fine Caspian Tern had a break in its wing that had to be amputated. Now it is waiting for placement at a zoo or aquarium. Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter (donations welcome see blog)
Away from breeding colonies, Caspian terns are usually seen singly (especially when foraging) or in small roosting flocks. Their usual hunting method is to fly up to 15 m above the surface of the water, then diving steeply on to prey, often becoming completely submerged in the process.
