Without flash, the subject doesn't show up as well, but the background is much fuller. Sometimes, this can be a good thing.
We are blessed with a guest, a Caspian Tern, Sterna caspia. There are only about 50,000 pairs throughout its worldwide distribution according to Wikipedia. Per the Smithsonian Handbook Birds of North America, the Capsian is the largest and least sociable tern species. Our visitor was diving into the waters of the Blue Heron Lagoon, near the Belle Isle Nature Zoo, seeking small fish.
A Caspian Tern from my archives.
Even though Caspian Terns nest in large numbers at BC, they've been one of the "more difficult" Terns to photograph close up. They rarely hunt at the Reserve and they are usually up high when they're over the paths so they don't present many good opportunities.
I deliberately cut off the bottom wing because it looked weird hanging down.
Caspian.
