A lot of activity at Coots Pond. Here are a couple of my favourite Tern shots. Great birds for practicing one's in-flight camera skills.
I'm on a leggings making spree. Everyone needs some now :) Caspian was actually the one who really DID need them. He is also agitating for a dance studio with a barre. Demanding little thing.

I was surprised at both the number and the noise of over 30 terns that suddenly “terned” up in pursuit of this tern who clearly had caught the prize!

Family : Charadriidae (鴴科). Length: 23cm.
體長約23公分，體態高挑，雌雄同色，黑色橫帶間隔橘紅色的胸部及雪白的腹部為辨識重點。嘴短尖，黑色。腳橙黃色。雄鳥繁殖期胸部為鮮豔橘紅色，胸腹間有黑色橫帶，非繁殖期時消失。雌鳥體色偏淡褐。羽毛的顏色為灰褐色，常隨季節和年齡而變化。跗蹠修長，脛下部亦裸出。中趾最長，趾間具蹼或不具蹼，後趾形小或退化。翅形尖長，第1枚初級飛羽退化，形狹窄，甚短小；第2枚初級飛羽較第3枚長或者等長。三級飛羽特長。尾形短圓，尾羽12枚。
東方紅胸鴴俗稱東方鴴，繁殖地在蒙古及中國東北，冬季遷徙到印尼、菲律賓及澳洲避冬，在臺灣為稀有過境鳥，出現於海岸濕地及機場草地等開闊地。金門縣境內為稀有過境鳥，與其他鴴科鳥類習性頗為不同，喜歡內陸的草地、平原耕地，不常出現在濕地環境，偶而會出現在水岸邊的乾草地，單獨或小群出現。
The Caspian Plover (Charadrius asiaticus) is a wader in the plover family of birds.
It breeds on open grassland in central Asia, mainly to the north and east of the Caspian Sea. This bird breeds in loose colonies, with three eggs being laid in a ground nest. These birds migrate south in winter to east Africa, usually still on grassland or arable. This plover is a very rare vagrant in western Europe. It is also a rare vagrant to Australia.
It feeds in a similar way to other plovers picking insects and other small prey mainly from grassland or arable. This attractive plover is slightly larger than Ringed Plover, and it recalls Greater Sandplover and Lesser Sandplover in appearance. It is slimmer and longer-legged than the sandplovers, and has a much stronger white supercilium, and a long thin bill. It also lacks white tail sides and a weak wing bar. Summer males have grey-brown backs and a white face and belly. The breast is chestnut, bordered black below. Other plumages have a grey-brown breast band, although the summer female may show a hint of chestnut. The call is a sharp chip.
This Tern would dive into the water like a rocket, then come flying out, circle around and do it again, over and over. Must have been catching something yummy.

The Caspian Sea, though a land-locked water basin not directly affected by global sea level rise, is being similarly impacted by climate change. The Caspian Basin plays an important role in atmospheric processes, regional water balance and also influences microclimates. Climatic phenomena in the Caspian Sea region are linked to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), with fluctuations in atmospheric air pressure affecting temperatures, moisture and winter storms in areas throughout Europe including the Volga Basin and rainfall over the Caspian Basin.

In terms of total world production, the Caspian accounts for 3.29% of oil production and 3.6% of gas production (BP 2009). The main focus of the oil and gas industry continues to be in the areas of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan.

Huntington Beach - Bordered on one side by Pacific Coast Highway and oil fields and houses on the other, Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve wetlands is a 300 acre coastal sanctuary for wildlife and migratory birds. There's a wooden bridge crossing over a tidal inlet and a 1.5 mile loop trail providing spectacular wildlife viewing.
