Caspian Tern -1380771

Caspian Tern. The Caspian Tern occurs on all continents except Antarctica. Caspian Terns are fastidious when it comes to feeding their young. Adults rinse their bills after feeding their babies. If an offered fish is accidentally dropped on the ground, the adult will rinse it off with water before re-offering it to the baby tern. IMG_2682

The immature bird on the right was constantly begging for food. Tough gig for the adult!

The shallow northern section of the Caspian Sea is shown in this Envisat image. Variously classed as an enormous lake or the smallest full-fledged sea, the Caspian is the largest landlocked water body in the world, with a surface area of 371 000 square kilometres.

This image was acquired by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument on Envisat on 22 September 2003, working in full resolution mode at 300 metre resolution.

July 9, 2022 - Caspian Tern Fishing at San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary. Photo Shoot with Leticia Hernandez, Esther Mukai, and Ayla.

I recently visited both Point Roberts and the ferry causeway at Tsawwassen and was able to watch the Caspian Terns. I was really off my game as most of my photos of them suck although they were kind of enough to give me lots of opportunities. This bird had a less than perfect landing but I guess any landing you can walk away from is a good landing.

Caspian gull is a name applied to the gull taxon Larus cachinnans, a member of the herring gull/lesser black-backed gull complex.

It is a large gull at 56–68 cm (22–27 in) long, with a 137 to 155 cm (54 to 61 in) wingspan and a body mass of 680–1,590 g (1.50–3.51 lb). Among standard measurements, the wing chord is 38.5 to 48 cm (15.2 to 18.9 in), the bill is 4.6 to 6.4 cm (1.8 to 2.5 in) and the tarsus is 5.8 to 7.7 cm (2.3 to 3.0 in).

The Caspian gull has a long, slender bill, accentuated by the sloping forehead. The legs, wings and neck are longer than those of the herring gull and yellow-legged gull. The eye is small and often dark, the legs vary from pale pink to a pale yellowish colour.

The back and wings are a slightly darker shade of grey than the herring gull but slightly paler than the yellow-legged gull. The outermost primary feather has a large white tip and a white tongue running up the inner web.

First-winter birds have a pale head with dark streaking on the back of the neck. The underparts are pale and the back is greyish. The greater and median wing-coverts have whitish tips forming two pale lines across the wing.

I've decided to name this lovely fox... Caspian! I wrote an article about Caspian which is on the Guardian website: www.yourlocalguardian.co.uk/yoursay/schools/10180905.My_f...

On my previous photo of Caspian, a few said feeding him will get him more used to people and all that. If you read the article you will find that that is not the case.

This Caspian Tern gave us a brilliant flying display today.
