Bird Island, Seychelles
We understand that this is the first time a Caspian Plover has been recorded on Bird, so we were particularly pleased to see it. This isn't a brilliant shot of it, but it was hard enough to pick it out from the many Grey Plovers, let alone get close to it! This is a heavy crop.
The beak looks like some online photos of Caspian Terns (red, then black then small yellow tip. The bluish wings throw me though. Perhaps the wings look blue because the bird is backlit. Maybe they look more grayish in direct light. Taken at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge in Southeast Texas.
This is the scene from Prince Caspian where the good guys are attacking the bad guys castle, and the good guys are trying to escape, and the minotaur holds up the gate so they can escape.
Gina B. Nahai is an Iranian American writer. Caspian Rain is the story of Yaas before the Islamic revolution. Her mother Bahar, whose name means spring, is born into a poor family in Tehran's Jewish quarter. When a chance meeting brings her together with her future husband, Omid, the son of wealthy Iranian Jews, Bahar overlooks all that separates her from his affluent family. True to her name, Bahar is filled with exuberance, but she mistakenly assumes that beyond the ghetto lie mobility and freedom and that marriage will provide her with an entry to a new life. Bahar's fortuitous encounter with Omid results in a marriage that quickly disintegrates, due to class pressures and Bahar's desire for a measure of independence.
Not only does Bahar fails to realize her own dream, but her daughter, Yaas, is born with a debilitating genetic disease that makes her life even harder than her mother's. Bearing the dual mark of her mother's class and genetic shortcomings, Yaas tries in vain to save her parents' marriage by acting as their intermediary. But this family, like the Iranian society of the time, is riddled with too many contradictions.
A very captivating read, filled with expectations and despair. Hope you all will enjoy the novel as much as I did :)

Caspian Gull on Leven Beach. My (and Fife's) first ever.
I see these guys a lot, but have never really gotten to see them diving for fish. These guys are HUGE. A wingspan of 50 inches, when they dive it isn't a plop in the water but a big splash!
Shoreline Lake has been fantastic of late. Terns are everywhere...Caspian, Elegant and Forster's Terns.
This guy liked a particular place in the lake, so I camped out and waited for it. Didn't get a good dive shot, but the fish in flight was the reward.
Flies slowly above the water, then dives swiftly on prey (mostly fish). Usually plunges underwater, but sometimes catches fish without submerging.

The Tern's well camouflaged eggs are laid on the ground in barely a scrape in the terrain. In this case it was in a tide line of shells. The collector managed to keep the shells from the nest site.

Just off the road, this drying mangrove area concentrated the fish, providing a bonanza for terns, pied kingfishers, various herons, spoonbills and pelicans.
CC Most Versatile: use your zoom
Maximum zoom on my camera and it showed that two of the birds have bands on their legs. A juvenile with distinctive markings is also visible.
