Casino da Urca was one of the most glamorous casinos in Brazil.
Urca is a traditional and wealthy residential neighborhood with nearly 7,000 inhabitants (2000 census) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Although most of the neighbourhood dates from the 1920s, parts of it are much older. What is now called the Forte São João, a military base at the foot of the Sugar Loaf mountain, is where the first Portuguese settlement in Rio was founded by Estácio de Sá in 1567. The French had arrived a few years earlier and founded a settlement close to what is now Gamboa, in downtown Rio. The French, riven by internal disputes between Catholics and Protestants, were massacred by the Portuguese and their Indian allies in attacks organised from here. The street now called Rua São Sebastião, which leads from behind the fort to the Urca cassino, was originally a trail from the Portuguese fort skirting the edge of the sea to the mainland along the peninsula that houses the Sugar Loaf and a smaller hill, the Morro Vermelho, also called the Morro da Urca. Rua São Sebastião thus has some claim to be the oldest street in Rio.
The cassino flourished and was a fixture of Rio's social scene in the prewar and immediate postwar period. Urca's most famous resident, Carmen Miranda, was discovered by a Hollywood producer visiting the cassino in 1938, where she was a singer. She rented a small house on Rua São Sebastião, on the left walking up from the cassino, where a plaque on the wall, the only one in Rio commemorating a famous person's house, remembers the "pequena motável", the "little wonder". The cassino also played a minor role in the history of astrophysics. Two US-Russian scientists in the cassino, discussing a model explaining neutrino emission patterns in the cooling of stars, called it after the cassino when they noticed how rapidly money, like energy pulsing from a dying star, disappeared from the roulette table. But astrophysics notwithstanding, the money ran out in the end. The rise of television put the cassino out of business in 1955, when the building was acquired by TV Tupí, a pioneering Brazilian television station owned by Assis Chateaubriand, the first Brazilian media mogul.
TV Tupi built a new frontage for the building onto the beach, increasing its internal space but turning the beautifully curved 1930s exterior into a plain right-angled building. The TV Tupi studio became best known as the location of the legendary Chacrinha programme, a variety programme which ran on weekend afternoons from the 1960s to the 1980s, with an enormous national audience. A slot on Chacrinha for any musician, dancer, actor or starlet was a sign they had finally arrived. The ageing inhabitants of Urca were, however, never entirely at ease with the crowds of screaming teenagers who regularly invaded their tranquil streets chasing their idols. Many greeted the closure of the studios in the late 1980s with relief, but the abandonment of the cassino and its being left to rot until 2008 was unfortunately typical of the misgovernment and neglect which has blighted modern Rio. It is currently being renovated to serve as a design institute.
Apparently some people want to ruin Coney Island by putting a casino there. There were many sections of the Mermaid Parade devoted to this, carrying banners saying “No Casino!” and pairs of people with these signs saying “Yes Clams” and “No Casino”. The Casino Business runs well in Innsbruck. Many Italians come here to play, because Gambling is illegal in Italy and Italians are crazy for Gambling. Tie and Sack Coat are obligate inside the Casino. I was in there three Times in my Life. I just went there with my Wife, because they had a good Offer for an excellent Dinner at the Hilton Hotel, in which the Entrance Fee for the Casino and some Gambling-Chips are included. Nothing to earn here for me - the Gambling House is in Advantage and this is unhealthy for my Wallet... (^^)

The Catalina Casino is located in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island, off the coast of Los Angeles. It is the most visible landmark on the island.
It is not a gambling casino. Its name comes from the Italian word casino, which means 'a gathering place'.
It has a movie theater on the lover level and a gigantic ballroom on the upper level.
It was completed in 1929 in the Art Deco and Mediterranean Revival styles.

Biloxi's casino history dates back to a period in the 1940s, when open, if technically illegal, gambling took place in a casino within the Broadwater Beach Resort. Open gambling ended during the 1950s. The Mississippi Gulf Coast became known as the "Poor Man's Riviera", and was frequented bySouthern families interested in fishing expeditions during the summer. Commercially, Biloxi was dominated by shrimp boats and oyster luggers. With the introduction of legal gambling in Mississippi in the 1990s, Biloxi was again transformed. It became an important center for casinos, and the hotels and complexes brought millions of dollars in tourism revenue to the city.
Casino Night was held in the Sharwan Smith Student Center this semester instead of the Hunter Conference Center. The event, hosted by SUUSA, includes classic gambling games blackjack, craps, roulette and poker. Students could earn clips playing the different games and use those chips to enter the raffle held at the end of the night.
Casinos are just plain weird to me. They create this entire world that appears to be a town or a street or some other place that is outdoors - entirely indoors. All the benefits of being outside without all that pesky nature and fresh air...
As you can probably tell, I'm not a big fan of the places. Everyone seems to have a walking attitude of quiet desperation. While my wife played at the tables for a few minutes, I sat on a bench along the "street" and sketched. I didn't start out with intention of creating some sort of film noire look, but the brush pen and black ink and the place itself just sort of conspired to make it so. The Casino de Monte-Carlo is owned and operated by a public company in which the Monaco government and the ruling family have a majority interest. The company also owns the principal hotels, sports clubs, food service establishments, and nightclubs throughout Monaco. The building is an architectural gem and has been a symbol of the rich and famous, having appeared it countless movies over the past half century.
