My son has been saving his own money for the last 6 months in order to buy himself a Nintendo DSi... not the DS lite, but the one that cost another $40. I am so proud of him. He took his money jar to GameStop and got his game system. Now he only has $3 left. The look on his face was priceless... like, "Wow, all the time it took saving and now it gone in seconds." Yep. Lesson learned.

Brian and myself went to the Green Light store to look at some light fixtures. on the checkout counter is this old functional cash register. Very Cool!
I almost got arrested when taking this shot. You just know the world is becoming a fucked up place when you can't even practice your photography hobby anymore because ... God forbid... you may be a terrorist...

So, here is Dad's cash register. It was acquired with his purchase of the stock and contents of Waldell's Hobbies formerly located at 1402 Cortelyou Road in Brooklyn, NY.
Dad used to purchase some of his scale model train supplies from Bill Waldell. I guess Bill decided to retire one day so dad purchased the store stock to sell at flea markets. This took place late 1970's or so, and I have no childhood recollection of the basement ever being free from boxes of toys and what not! Chemistry sets, geology sets, Lone Ranger sets, G.I. Joe sets, doll houses, toy stoves, toy refrigerators, Chinese Yo-Yos, plastic model kits, Testor's paints, balsa wood, brass stock, HO scale track, you name it.
Dad would keep his machine on an old treadle powered Singer sewing machine in the living room. Every New Year, he and mom would throw a party for friends and family and at midnight, dad would have myself or my sister advance the display to the next year: $19.80.. $19.81.. $19.82 and so forth. It was a an annual ritual!
Dad moved upstate in 1998 and the register came with him. About 2001, he kind of let go and the machine got all dusty. I would come over, brush it off every so often and advance the date but after a while.
Mom retired and moved in in 2007, and the register got shoved (with the Singer sewing machine) into the back of a unused staircase turned into a closet and covered with clutter.
Dad passed in 2009, and mom took over the house and the register stayed in the closet. Mom passed in 2017, and now we are clearing out the house, and I said no way I'm leaving it. So with my latest UHaul trip from New York to Texas to retreive more of my belongings and get them to Texas, I dug out the register and Paul Strubeck was nice enough to risk a hernia and load it for me on the tail of the UHaul.
It made the journey safe & sound and I put in on an end table on the front porch. She was a little stiff in operation, so I vacuumed it out, lubed up the works with PB Blaster (oh, how I love that stuff) which freed up the mechanism nicely. A little Pledge Orange Oil cleaner on a rag for the case, and she cleaned right up.

This machine was manufactured after January 27, 1927 (starting s/n 2,640,000) but before January 26, 1928 (starting s/n 2,790,000), and from the number, I'd say she was assembled pretty close to the latter half of 1927.
As with my Model 312, I placed some period coins & currency in their respective compartments, and now I keep the amount display to dad's birth year: 1942.

This is Cash. He is a retired racing Greyhound.
We are adopting him.
His racing name was "RJ's Black", but we are renaming him Cash, like the man in black. We think the new name should fit him nicely. He is pretty skinny right now, but we plan to fatten him right up.

He's pooped after chase around the yard all day with JJ. I leave the kitchen sliding door open when I'm out in the pool, so they can go in the house if it gets too hot. I don't usually open it this wide, but I saw this picture comin' and I wanted the open doorway. Cashus likes the best of both worlds. Kinda in... kinda out. (This one's mine)
