Copy the background image as a layer. Set the mode on the layer to "Color"
Select the background image and from the GEGL Menu select "C2G"
This operation takes time - play wih the number of passes, etc..
If you make the "Color" layer invisible while performing the operaion, you'll see this makes an nteresting B&W rendering. Make the color layer visible again.
Merge, then flatten and you're done.
