After their time hauling milk, some of the Borden's Butter Dish cars were repurposed to haul other chemicals. Repainted into other colors from their original silver, this blue one is living out its days well into the Penn Central era.
The model is scratch-built by Shawmut Car Shops and is basically a solid piece of wood. I got it via an eBay purchase. I put more accurate Piko trucks under it, adapted it to use Kadee 906 couplers, and finally I removed the original decals and printed my own.

I usually associate the Brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) with Spring, but it has been lovely to see so many on the wing this summer!
There is a view that the word 'butter-fly' originates from the yellow colour of male Brimstones. The wings of the female are very pale green, almost white, males have yellow-green underwings and yellow upperwings. The wing shape and vein pattern of both males and females perfectly matches a leaf when roosting overnight or hibernating within foliage.
Adults hibernate through cold weather, so may be seen flying on warm days throughout the year, although they are most common in the spring. Sightings peak in April and May as hibernating adults emerge, and in early August when their offspring reach adulthood. Usually seen in ones or twos, Brimstones are never very common, but are widespread.
They can be found in damp woodlands along sunny woodland rides and mature hedgerows and in large gardens across most of England, Wales and Ireland.
The foodplants of the larvae are buckthorn and alder buckthorn. Both shrubs are found in wet woodland, while buckthorn also occurs on dry chalk and limestone soils.
This little fellow decided he wanted to try out some peanut butter that I put on the post for birds. He must have liked it because he cleaned it all up!

Macro Mondays 'bread and topping' theme. A crumpet topped with lots of butter to soak through the holes!
I had also had shots with melted cheese or jam but preferred this one - though I did enjoy eating the others too!

A bright cluster of Yellow Alpine Pasqueflower (Pulsatilla alpina ssp. apiifolia) stands below the headwall adjacent to the Passo dei Salati, Italian Alps.
We planned a completely different experience for this particular day, only to change our minds abruptly and head for the higher elevations when it became clear that the heat was too much for the majority of the party where we had started far below. Fortunately, there is a gondola from the town of Alagna that stops less than a kilometer from this beautiful rushing, verdant cleft of a valley. The hike up must surely be spectacular, as the trail passes through old Walser grazing meadows, replete with stone-roofed huts. I'll try to find a good-enough photo of one of these Walser structures soon as they are fascinating.
Technical notes: Hand-held focus stack of 4 images, manually blended. The frisky breeze made this task somewhat of an uphill battle.
