I like this.
I made this.
It was inspired by a single piece of outsider art in Lausanne's Collection de l'Art Brut. (I made Jesse take a picture of it, which you can see here.) It wasn't the only piece of art largely composed of tiny, deliberate handwriting, but it was the one that struck me most. I am no artist but I can at least write-- and so I did, on coffee-stained (deliberate) and wine-smeared (accidental) paper, with a tiny portrait of Maud Gonne to rest over and under my favorite William Butler Yeats poems.
It's the first tiny writing piece I started, though the second finished, and it's still rough. But it's got the layered antique look I like. I made art for myself and my self is delighted. This is a strange feeling.
John is singing one of the great American folk songs: Shenandoah, in the Paul Robeson fashion and using the Paul Robeson words. 'It's seven long years since first I saw you..' These words are not used in the version sung by the incomparable Sissel on her American tour. 'Oh Shenandoah I love your daughter..' is sung by Sissel but not in the version being sung here. Some recent research suggests that English came from the Norse languages and perhaps that explains why Sissel and many Norwegians have beautiful English. The picture on the wall is of Andy O'Sullivan ('Mike Ardkereagh's uncle) passing the Butler Arms Hotel with a rail of turf drawn by a hinny, erroneously known as a jennet in parts of Ireland. The picture is from the Lawrence Collection.

The Anasazi were excellent climbers. Here's a short route up to Ballroom Cave. The hand- and toeholds were carved into the rock using a large piece of quartz most likely.

So my front right tyre exploded with a loud bang like a gunshot and a plume of smoke on Mill Road, Cambridge today. Finding myself without a wheel brace I was almost embarrassed to call the AA for assistance and then face a wait of nearly an hour. One bright moment was the passing of this Butler tanker and a perfect photo opportunity. Sadly I only had my ancient Nokia mobile with me so the picture's a bit hazy - which is a shame as with a better camera that would have made a really decent shot.
I had so much fun designing this bag! Aside from Amy's fabrics I was inspired by a strong desire for spring to be here NOW.
I used my own ruler free tote pattern (aka the one where I just start cutting and see what happens) and combined a gorgeous black floral by Ms Butler with a pretty lilac and white polka dot cotton. The flowers appliqued to the front of the bag are from the scraps of another Amy Butler fabric that I used to make a skirt. I used a fusible iron on transfer paper to make sure they would stay in place, then hand stitched around the edges with pink cotton thread for extra security. There are also four pretty blue cherry blossoms created by the same appliqued process that I made by cutting out some of the little blue and black rectangles that were on the fabric with the flowers. The lining is a black cotton with grey and green polka dots and there are two nifty inside pockets. All of the stitching on this bag was done in the pink cotton thread
15" wide x 17" tall with two 23" straps.
