Throughout his life James Joyce was keenly interested in music and singing, and there are hundreds of references to songs, singers, and musical life in his works. Joyce’s parents met while singing in the choir of the church of the Three Patrons in Rathgar, and his mother had had lessons in dancing, piano, voice and politeness at the Misses Flynn’s School at 15 Usher’s Island, the location for Joyce’s story ‘Dead’.
Joyce sang in a concert with parents at Bray Boat Club in June 1888, when he was little more than six more years old, and by the age of nine he was taking piano lessons. When he was a student a Belvedere College, Joyce was friendly with Richard and Eugene Sheehly, and often visited their home where the musical entertainment ranged popular parlour music to opera. According to Joyce’s biographer, Richard Ellman, Joyce’s voice had never broken and his great aunt, Mrs Callanan (one of Misses Flynn at Usher’s Island) said that his voice was a weak tenor.
Joyce was friendly with JC Doyle, who won the Feis Ceoil prize for singing in 1899, and with renowned tenor John McCormack, won the same competition in 1903. They persuaded Joyce to enter the Feis Ceoil in 1904 in which he on a bronze medal, and during the summer of 1904 he had a few engagements to sing at garden parties and other occasions. Joyce seems to have toyed with the idea of a career as a singer, but seems to have given up the idea after the Feis Ceoil.
From the start of Ulysses, where Buck Mulligan intones the opening phase of the Latin mass, to the end, where the singer Molly Bloom reviews her days and her life, Ulysses is dotted with references to popular songs, opera arias, and famous singers. The ‘Sirens’ episode (episode 11), set in the bar of the Ormond Hotel, is written in the form of a musical fugue even begins with a section resembling an orchestra tuning up, using themes or musical motifs that will appear in the episode.

Who has twice been discovered on a troopship bound for Egypt. The first occasion was about two months ago, and the second last Wednesday, when her failture to produce her proper identification disc led to her arrest. At the Water Police Court she was charged with unlawfully wearing a military uniform, and was sentenced to the rising of the court. The girl, who hails from Kurri Kurri, near Newcastle, explained that she desired to get to the front as a nurse or in any other helpful capacity.

Our Halloween accommodations...spooky indeed with the Jack-O'-lanterns protecting the entrance.
Uninsulated huts are not particularly warm in the winter, the interior temp was a balmy 2-5F warmer than outside, whereas a 4 season tent can get 10-15F warmer than outside. So it was in the upper 20s in the hut, and mid 20s outside.
Typically there are views of the best part of Vermont, the views of the Adirondacks, from the porch but only once during the night did it clear up enough to see the lights of Burlington some 15 miles away, never did I see the Adirondacks until the drive home on route 7 which displayed some wonderful post stormy lighting.
