Prairie bush clover is a relict of the expansive tallgrass prairie which once covered the Upper Midwest. It is extremely unusual in that is one a very small number of plants (or any organisms for that matter) that is a true Midwestern endemic. It only lives in high quality tall grass prairies in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois which have not been plowed or degraded. As a result of row crops, overgrazing, and lack of management there is much less than 1% of this habitat remaining. This species is so uncommon that it is listed as federally threatened under the Endangered Species Act. In addition to its rarity, it is also extremely difficult to spot. The vast majority of the time it has cleistogamous or closed flowers and its slender foliage disappears amongst the tallgrass. I have searched for this species where other people have marked the individuals with pink flags and sometimes it still takes me over a minute to find them. This is the first time I have had the pleasure of seeing the "true" or chasmogamous flowers (open pink ones!)

Lespedeza leptostachya, Sauk County Wisconsin, 30 July 2016.

A very common bush cricket found almost anywhere there is vegetation. Nymphs are seen April-July reaching maturity from July onwards. Adults are then seen through to November or even December. Eats both plant material and other invertebrates. Females have a strongly upwardly curved ovipositor adding up to 10mm to their body length.

The African bush elephant is the larger of the two species of African elephant. Both it and the African forest elephant have in the past been classified as a single species.

I think we caught the end of this, but there were a few people protesting Bush's move to close by here.
