During my recent visit to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari I also came across a flock of kaka. I tried to get some sort of an action shot. This is the best I could manage that day. It conveys some motion due to low-ish shutter speed. I wasn't sure whether to post this but I like the image so here goes! Despite the sunny weather, down on the forest floor in the shade it is still pretty dark. Hence a low-ish shutterspeed, widest aperture as possible and high iso.

Generally heard before they are seen, kaka are large, forest-dwelling parrots that are found on all three main islands of New Zealand and on several offshore islands. Much reduced in range and abundance in the North and South islands due to forest clearance and predation by introduced mammals, kaka are most abundant on offshore islands that have no introduced mammals, or at least no stoats. They remain locally common at some sites on the main islands that are close to offshore island refuges, and have increased in abundance at others where mammalian pests have been controlled.

This is part of the set A cold winter forenoon I took on a clear and wonderful winter day outside Lund in Skåne. It had snowed heavily the day before which made the snowy landscape nicely untouched and together with hard rime on trees and bushes created a real ‘winter wonderland’. These old dried out flower bushes came alive with all the hard rime on them.

🇩🇪 Beschreibung (Deutsch):

🇬🇧 Description (English):

The Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) is a small but striking songbird from the shrike family. Males are easily identified by their black “bandit mask,” grey head, and reddish-brown back. This species prefers semi-open habitats with hedgerows, thorn bushes, and field edges, where it hunts large insects and occasionally small vertebrates.

The bird’s German name, Neuntöter (“nine killer”), comes from an old folk tale: It was believed that the shrike would impale exactly nine prey animals on thorns before eating the first one. While the number is myth, the behavior is real – Red-backed Shrikes often store food by impaling it on sharp twigs or thorns, a habit that earned them the name “butcher birds” in English.

As a species typical of traditional agricultural landscapes, the Red-backed Shrike is now protected in many regions due to habitat loss.

An old bush mill that has been in the middle of the property for the past few years.

It was used to make garden stakes from local timber that was found on the farm.

This little burning bush is growing in my neighbor, Dave, yard.. It's a little sparse in leaves but still pretty when the sun shines on it...

The snowball bushes around here are very tough plants. They never get watered, and survive cold winters and hot summers. They are completely neglected.

It was windy, so I was surprised I managed to get this in focus.

I still haven't finished digging through my New Zealand folders. I am *very* slow when it comes to processing photos. Scratch that actually, I am very slow when it comes to doing anything.

In NZ a 40 day walk has started which will finish on our parliament steps in the capital city Wellington. It is to heighten awareness of environmental issues.

This photo started out as below on a walk in the forest (known as bush in NZ) near Wellington. A slow exposure was used but if you are walking at the same speed as the people in front of you you can get them fairly sharp while blurring everything else. A kind of walking pan ;-) Usually I use a wide angle lens for this.

Edit: This just using factalius filter on "Shaggy" setting. Put "Fractalius" in a google search if you want to download the free trial.

A beautiful lilac bush grows in my backyard. in 2013 it got cut way back. 7 years later it is finally as full as it was then. I couldn't resist taking many photo images with my Canon, then with my IPhone 11 Pro I took a few more at different angles. My favorite photography is Macro with Bokeh thrown into the mix. Bokeh is when you focus on one item whether background or foreground, zoom in on it and blur the rest of the image. I also like to layer my Photo Images giving them a dimensional look. This makes for interesting and unusual photos. The lilac is my favorite flower besides the Poppy. I love its fragrance and the differentiating purple colors. These little guys don't often hold still long enough for a picture but I found a more cooperative one yesterday.

This blue bush clematis has been growing in my garden for several years, but this is the first time it's bloomed. Well worth the wait!

Hope you are enjoying a beautiful July week. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments -- I appreciate them all.

A pair of Bush Stone-curlew were quite active at night in the carpark of our final accommodation in Darwin.

This young holly bush was standing amongst some taller pines whose trunks were soaked from the recent heavy rain. In the background and to the right was a younger ballerina-like pine with its arms aloft in pose - at least that's what my eyes and imagination see...

This is my latest ICM shot. I'm pleased with this one and starting to get a feel for how I want them to look

After not seeing any yet this year in their usual place, I was very relieved to finally find some in Friday! Saw 8 males and one female, with one male seemingly trying to woo this female! She was slowly waving her legs about, so not quite sure what that meant in response!! Just managed to capture him with his little wings open! Couldn't hear any sound though...
